Northumberland / Daniel Mosman - Longhoughton Area c1716 - c1781
« on: Friday 18 November 16 16:48 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone else researching this family, or the name in the Longhoughton area?

Daniel was born around 1716, had three wives and a number of children (in the PR's on FamilySearch/FreeReg/BT's for Northumberland etc), he is often listed as being of "Bowma or Boomer" which I think is probably Boulmer, this is what I have so far:

First wife:  Ann Wright, married 24 May 1741, child Ann bn and died in 1741, can't find a death record for Ann snr.
Second Wife: Isabel Robson, married 12 Nov 1743, can't find any children yet, or a death record
Third Wife: Elizabeth Smith, married 24 May 1755.  Children Mary 1755, James 1756 (my line), Daniel 1759, Elizabeth 1762, Jane 1764 and Elenor 1766 who may be the Eleanor Mosman who died in Berwick in 1824, single and aged 57.

I have info on James Mosman going forward (he turned up in Ponteland) and some of his children, but nothing on his siblings apart from Elenor (possibly).  And what happened to Daniel snr and his wife Elizabeth, where did they go?  There is a reference on the NBI for Northumberland for a Daniel Mosman in 1781 but I don't have the ability to view more details, does anyone have access?

There is another Mosman line in Eglingham, that at this point, aren't connected, but as it's an unusual surname they might well be somewhere down the line!

Other name variations are Musman and Mossman.

United States of America / Alex Grdovic Immigration
« on: Monday 04 August 14 13:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm helping a friend look into his Croatian ancestry.

His Gfather was Alex Grdovic (Americanization of name is Grudovich).  From census & WWI draft registration on Family Search we have his date and place of birth as 30 July 1890 in Samobor, Croatia. Due to the extent of the Austrian Empire at that time, his country of origin often comes up as either Austria or Austria/Hungary.  We have his WWI Draft Registration and the US Census info, along with his children and their spouses moving forward.  What I'd like to find is his immigration record, which was in 1910 according to the census.  The free records at Family Search don't contain him, neither does Ellis Island or Castle Garden records.  There are quite a number of people with this surname entering the US, most after 1900, but not an Alex, or a variant of Alex.  I also saw on Family Search that they have a digitized copy of the Croatian Church record 1516-1994, Samobor is only listed as a town in the Roman Catholic records and I can't find him in their either, I started at his birth date and worked forward a year, the surnames are very legible.  It's possible that he may be in the records somewhere, perhaps for another religion type but obviously it's all in Croatian!

What I'd really like to start with is his immigration record, to see if that sheds any further light on the matter.  I can always go to the library to look at the records on Ancestry, do they have a better collection of immigration records than other sites?  Or does anyone have any other ideas about researching this name, especially in Europe?

Durham / New Grange, Durham
« on: Friday 18 April 14 19:37 BST (UK)  »
So I have an Elizabeth Laws born at New Grange in 1854.  Carole W and AlpineCottage have already helped me to identify the location from census data.  Only trouble is, I can't find it.  I've googled it, searched genuki, searched old maps and the durham mining museum.  In the end I've plotted the locations her brothers were born in and the only village in the kelloe/Cassop/Castle Eden area with Grange in it's name is Trimdon Grange:

1850 Kelloe
1851 Kelloe
1854 New Grange?
1856 Cassop
1860 Benton, NBL
1863 Durham
1867 Castle Eden

Has anyone come across a New Grange before?

Durham Lookup Requests / Elizabeth Laws bn 1854 But Where?
« on: Thursday 17 April 14 23:26 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for Elizabeth Laws, bn in 1854, daughter of Isaac Laws and Elizabeth Lowton.  The 1871 census lists her birth place as Grange, Durham, but I can't find it.  It also lists her brother's birthplaces as Helloe instead of Kelloe, so her own birth could be a mis-transcription.  The IGI lists her christening as 13 Dec 1854 but the location is just Durham.

In 1871 the family are in Esh, Lanchester, Durham. Brothers are Robert, Isaac, John, William, Thomas and Richard Laws.  Thomas and Richard would not have been born in 1861.

Can anyone see her on the 1861 census please?

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Barnwell Marriage in 1834
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 19:48 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to provide any extra information on the marriage of Mary Ann Butler and Frederick Parkes in Barnwell in 1834?

I'm trying to ascertain whether or not this Mary Ann Butler might be the one born in Fen Ditton in 1815 to Samuel Butler and Hannah Benson.

Durham / What Is This Place - Near Monk Hesledon
« on: Wednesday 22 May 13 00:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking at the BT's for Durham on Family Search, Monk Hesledon, P146, first entry top left.

Baptism of Isabella Cummins to Anthony and Mary Ann on 4 March 1841.  Despite the fact that the writing is good, I can't make out the abode.  I've also been poring over a map of the area and can't see anything that might fit that name.

Can anyone decipher it?  Perhaps it's the name of a house or a farm or something?

Northumberland / Newcastle Parishes Map
« on: Tuesday 25 September 12 20:44 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any idea of how the parishes of Newcastle connect to each other?  I have a family of Embleton's that I'm trying to trace the early baptisms of around Newcastle.

I have:
Henry Embleton bn c1803 in Morpeth (according to census data) who married Mable Lumsdon of Warkworth (bn 1809) at St Johns in Newcastle 1 May 1831.

From 1842 their children are all baptised at St Andrew, but there are three earlier children that I'm trying to trace the baptisms for.  They weren't baptised at St Andrew and I'm looking at St John again in case I missed them.... but what other parishes should I look at?  I can see on Family Search that there are a number of Newcastle parishes but I don't know where they are within the city in relation to St Andrew and St John.

The poeple I'd like to find baptism records for are:

John Embleton c1833
George Embleton c1836
Elizabeth Embleton c1838

On the census when they're still at home their birthplace is listed as Newcastle.

Durham / Charles Henderson and Wife Ann ??, Lanchester c1770
« on: Tuesday 14 August 12 20:14 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone who might have access to the records for Lanchester for this early period?  I have an Ann Henderson, father Charles, mother Ann who was born in Lanchester in the early 1780's.  I found these other possible siblings for her, all born Lanchester to a Charles and Ann Henderson, but I can't turn up a marriage in the IGI batches for this couple.

Ann Henderson      10 Oct 1773
George Henderson   15 Oct 1775
Hannah Henderson   28 Dec 1777
Abraham Henderson    26 Mar 1780
Ann Henderson      14 Sep 1783
James Henderson   3 Sep 1786

Can anyone help with who Charles Henderson married, and when/where?

Cambridgeshire / Col(e)man Family Duxford/Thriplow
« on: Thursday 12 July 12 18:54 BST (UK)  »
I have a Rebecca Colman marrying Samuel Butler in 1828 in Swaffham Bulbeck.  They had George Colman (1829) , Mary Anne )1832), Ashwell Frost (1835) and Jeremiah (1836) all Swaffham Bulbeck.  Samuel died in 1836.  On the 1841 census Rebecca and the children are with her BIL John Butler, in 1851 Rebecca and Jeremiah are with married son George, 1861 she is a servant.  On all of the census she gives her place of birth as Duxford, and the ages put a date of birth around 1797-1799.  She was buried in Swaffham Bulbeck on 16 AUG 1871 aged 73.  I don't have her on a census in 1871 though.

What I struggle with is her birth and her parents/siblings.  Although there are both Colman's and Coleman's in Duxford (and a birth of a Rebecca in 1803), I don't think this is her.  There are also Coleman's 2 miles down the road in Thriplow, and there is a Rebecca born there to John and Rebecca Brazier chr 3 March 1799.  The marriage was on 3 APR 1796 in Thriplow, although there is a conflicting entry on the IGI for Whittleford in 1796, no date given.  Rebecca Brazier was chr in Whittlesford 2 OCT 1768 to John & Ann Brazier.  Given that Whittlesford is 2 miles from Duxford and Thriplow is 2 miles from Duxford I know we're dealing with the same area so hopefully the same family!

As far as I can ascertain, Rebecca Coleman is the only child chr to John & Rebecca Coleman that I can find in Thriplow, Duxford or Whittlesford area.  There is a death record for a Rebecca Coleman aged 44 (1770) in Thriplow in 1814 which I think is the wife of John Coleman.  I can't find a birth for John Coleman, but there are Colemans in Thriplow up to 1737, then a big gap until the birth of Rebecca in 1799.

I'd really like to prove one way or the other if this Rebecca bn in 1799 is mine, and if she has any siblings and any info on her parents too.  Does anyone have the PR's for Thriplow or any other sources of possible research for this Coleman family?
