Hi

Does anyone have access to the records for Christ Church, Blackburn, Lancashire?

A lot of marriage on one side of the family appear to take place there.

The one I am stuck on at the moment is Eric Carter / Jane Harwood which took place in 1937.

I think Eric's Parents were James Carter and Mary Coupland their marriage took place in 1904 also at Christ Church, Blackburn.

I need this to verify the relationship. This is not my direct line but a Great Aunt / Great Uncle.

Heres Hoping with Thanks Jinks

Whilst looking for some Yorkshire / Lancashire Quaker Families this website flagged up for Irish Quaker Wills thought I'd pass it on

There might be more 'Irish' stuff too.

The Common Room / Advice please - Have a picked up a different family?
« on: Saturday 04 December 21 17:15 GMT (UK)  »
Whilst picking up my ancestors siblings I came across a Mary Ann Hayes (Heys etc) born in 1835

She marries twice first to a Henry Lee (though in one Census spelt Leigh) married 1857 in Preston Lancashire later to a Thomas Holmes also in Preston, Lancashire in 1864

My question relates to her son from the first marriage John Lee

John Lee was born in Preston in 1859, details from Birth Registration and baptism record at St Johns in Preston.

In 1861 He is living with his Mother (Looks like his father has died in 1860) and maternal Grandparents, he is listed as John Leigh,

In 1871 He is living with his Mother and Step Father Thomas Holmes listed as son-in-law (stepson)

in 1877 he marries Elizabeth Blake at St Thomas's Church in Blackburn, Lancashire, His Father is listed as Henry Lee (Book keeper) this is where the fun starts!  ::)

His first son is born in Southport (Henry Amos Lee) Henry is living with his Paternal Grandparent Thomas and Mary Ann Holmes(nee Hayes) later he is joined by Mary Ann Lee and Edith Lee.

My first thought was both John Lee and Elizabeth (nee Blake) had died but with other Grandchildren appearing I started to look for them in other Census Records and check for possible other children.

Besides Henry Amos born 1878 , Edith born 1882 and Mary Ann born 1884, there 'appears' to be more children.

Mary Ellen Lee born Farnworth in 1880 - This now has me confused two children called Mary! ok it does happen but not often.

also George, Edward, Minnie (registered with Mother's name of Lee as well as birth name) Annie, Joseph and finally Bertha in 1896.

The only decent match for a death of John Lee (Father) is in 1897 BUT he's not with Elizabeth and his Parents in any Census after his marriage and in 1891 Elizabeth Lee is supposedly a Widow!

I then serious think I have picked up a family with the same name BUT to make matters worse Edith (who has been living with her Parental Grandparents) in 1911 is living with Mary ELLEN Coupe who is her Sister (Mary Ellen Lee married Joseph Coupe ).

Can anyone find John Lee to prove he is still alive to have the later children?
Since the Parental Grandparents 'accept' Mary Ann Lee born AFTER Mary Ellen Lee I am really at a loss, have I accidently picked up a different family.  :-\ :-\

I have been stuck on this Lady for a LONG time to thought I'd throw it out for HELP

Emma Wilson was born circa 1855 in Manchester. (that's one sticking point the combination of Wilson and Manchester)

The next is she is NOT with her parent or parents(s) but her Grandmother.

Census 1861 Russell Street, Blackburn, Lancashire, England

James Fairbrother Head M 34 Lancaster Blackburn,
Jonathan Fairbrother Son M 4 Lancaster Blackburn,
Margaret Hull Stepdaughter F 14 Lancaster Stewarton, (HALL)
Jane Hull Stepdaughter F 11 Lancaster Stewarton,
Margaret William Mother In Law F 64 Lancaster Stewarton, *** Grandmother*** should read Wilson
Emma William Niece F 7 Lancaster Manchester,
Jane William Lodger F 36 Lancaster Stewarton,

Census 1871 Blackburn, Lancashire

Margt Wilson Head F 73 Lancaster, Lancashire
Jane Hall Granddaughter F 21 Lancaster, Lancashire
Emma Wilson Granddaughter F 17 Manchester, Lancashire
Jonathan Fairbrother Grandson M 14 Blackburn, Lancashire
Margt Harwood Granddaughter F 24 Lancaster, Lancashire
Elizth Harwood Granddaughter F 5 Blackburn, Lancashire
Mary Jane Harwood Granddaughter F 3 Blackburn, Lancashire
Aminda Harwood Granddaughter F 1 Blackburn, Lancashire

Margaret Wilson with husband William (who I haven't found on any census BUT he's a Mariner so possibly at sea) ALL the child bar one state Mariner / Shipwright the other states Musician.

The Children of Margaret are all baptised in Lancaster - Joseph b 1821 Elizabeth b 1825 (who possibly marries three times certainly twice) , James b 1828, Mary b 1832 and Jane b 1834.

I have thought of purchasing the marriage certificate for Emma - but if she is illegitimate (which I suspect, it won't help) and the Birth certificate could become costly.

I have managed to trace Joseph through the census records and he is the least likely but even Elizabeth is a likely contender!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Woods Family. Preston, Lancashire 1851 Census
« on: Wednesday 27 January 21 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with a look up in Preston Lancashire

The Family consists of Father John, Mother Mary

The Census ID is Registration Number: HO107 Piece/Folio: 2266 / 561

Which refers to Cobden Street, Preston, Lancashire

One of the sons is named Jabez Woods b 1843.
Other children are James (his date of birth seems to fluctuate so as early as 1833), Betty or Elizabeth, Mary Ann and joseph (twin of Mary).

James Woods marries from this address in Nov 1851.

There might be more children.

Thank you in advance Jinks

The Common Room / Unclaimed estates
« on: Sunday 25 August 19 19:53 BST (UK)  »
Whilst searching for ancestors on google (I do this sometimes when I hit a brick wall) up popped a website about unclaimed estates (Its probably been there all the time BUT never seen it)

I came across a gentleman called Bartley James Smith born 17th December 1892 Manchester and died 22nd December 1991 Leeds. 99 Years old!

So like you do when you have an interest in genealogy I went digging.

I couldn't find much :(

In the 1901 he is living with his Mother Mary born Ireland and a Charwoman.

In the 1911 Census he is in a fever hospital!

So he was hospitalized at the age of 19 with fever survived it, lived to be 99, didn't leave a will
so his money now goes to the crown

Anyone else think this is particularly sad and can anyone add to it?

The Common Room / Occupation Poor? What does it mean?
« on: Saturday 03 August 19 15:45 BST (UK)  »
Lancashire, England but maybe a general term

Found a few baptisms that state occupation POOR!

Baptism: 24 Oct 1706 St Leonard, Walton-le-Dale, Lancs.
Ellen Hodgkinson - Daughter of Henry Hodgkinson
    Abode: Walton
    Occupation: Poor
    Register: Baptisms 1609 - 1751 from the Bishop's Transcripts, Page 50, Entry 23
    Source: LDS Film 1502378

is an example but what does it actually mean then?
Are they living below the poverty line? Unemployed?
Is this something to do with the Poor Law?

Thanks

Armed Forces / Unknown Armed Forces can anyone give me any clue to identification
« on: Saturday 06 July 19 16:45 BST (UK)  »

Whilst my Mum was sorting through her photographs yesterday we came across an unknown, we know the photograph doesn't belong to her family

It possibly belonged to my Step-Father's maternal line which could be Atherton.

Can anyone identify anything from the photo? I am presuming the photo dates from WWII but I am open to other options, and most likely English Regiment
