Antrim / John McNEILL - who's his father?
« on: Wednesday 13 March 24 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
When John applied to enter the Civil Service in 1867, his birth date is given as 02 Nov 1848 and his father's name is recorded as Daniel McNEILL.

When John married in 1875, being of full age, his father's name is recorded as Andrew McNEILL (a labourer).

I cannot find any baptismal record of a John McNEILL, with father Andrew, around that time or in that area, and neither can I find a marriage for Andrew McNEILL which might match.

I've not been able to access the original record of the 1875 marriage; the 1867 record is quite clear.

Am I conflating 2 totally disparate events or making some other error? Is the marriage transcript wrong?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ireland / Bartholomew QUIGLEY & Ann HUNT ca 1840
« on: Friday 19 January 24 17:44 GMT (UK)  »
In 1851, living at Austin Houses, Wigan, are:-

Bartholomew QUIGLEY (transcribed COGLEY), b 1808 Ireland
Hannah              do                    do             , b 1816 Ireland
James                do                    do             , b 1843 Ireland
John                  do                    do             , b 1845 Ireland

In 1861, the surname is transcribed as SOWERLY, but in 1871, 1881 and 1891 it is QUIGLEY. The birth place is never more detailed than simply 'Ireland'.

It appears that, after 1851, all later children were born in Wigan with the records giving mother's maiden name as HUNT.

I know it's an extremely long shot, but can anyone please point me to the marriage of Bartholomew QUIGLEY and Ann/Hannah HUNT which, presumably, occurred ca 1842?

Herefordshire / Mother of Thomas DREW, 1692
« on: Thursday 09 November 23 15:11 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas DREW was baptized on 24 Oct 1692 in Bosbury to John & Anne. A search for their marriage has produced:-

27 Jan  1681  John DREW to Ann SMYTH  in Much Marcle    (7.3 Miles)
15 Sep 1685 John DREW to Anne BLAKEWAY  in Goodrich  (16.7 miles)

The only contemporary DREW baptisms to John & Ann within 20 miles are:-

22 Dec 1688  John  in Bosbury
24 Oct 1692  Thomas  in Bosbury

To which marriage  can I attribute these baptisms?

I have not found a relevant burial of an Ann DREW in the locality.

Any help would be appreciated.

Herefordshire / Elizabeth & Mary WOOD, late 17th C
« on: Sunday 29 October 23 14:21 GMT (UK)  »
Elizabeth and Mary WOOD were baptized in Wacton on 18 Apr 1686 to parents Matthew & Elizabeth. It appears that this couple later baptized Matthew (11 Jul 1695) and Thomas (19 Dec 1698), also in Wacton. So, when and where did did Matthew & Elizabeth marry?

The only marriage of a Matthew WOOD which I can find that is anywhere close in both time and place is:-

03 Mar 1684   Matthew WOOD m  Sarah ????   in Wacton

Date and location are absolutely perfect, but Sarah? As far as I can make out, Sarah and Elizabeth are not synonyms, but I'd be delighted if someone could assure me otherwise! Alternatively, point me towards the correct marriage.

All and any help will be much appreciated.

Herefordshire / Parents of Matthew DREW, early 18th century
« on: Monday 16 October 23 12:23 BST (UK)  »
Matthew DREW was bap by Thomas & Elizabeth DREW on 03 Apr 1720 in Thornbury.

The only marriage of a Thomas DREW & Elizabeth XXXX I can find is:-

21 Aug 1712 Thomas DREW m Elizabeth WOOD in Bromyard - both of Thornbury

That would appear to settle the matter. Unfortunately, there are some flies in the ointment!
In total, there are 15 baptisms attributed to this couple, some in Bromyard, some in Thornbury, and TWO of these occur before the marriage date. What we have is:-

                            Bromyard                Thornbury

03 Mar 1710          Thomas
10 Jan 1712                                           Thomas
15 Jan 1714                                            Francis
19 Apr 1715            Anne
01 Aug 1717       John & Thomas
26 Sep 1717                                         Elizabeth
03 Mar 1719           Thomas
01 Aug 1719            John
03 Apr 1720                                           Matthew
31 Mar 1722                                              Mary
21 Apr 1722           Elizabeth
13 Jun 1724                                            Hannah
01 Dec 1727                                           Samuel
03 Mar 1729           Thomas

How many DREW families do we have?
Where & when are the other marriages?
Who are Matthew's parents?

Any and all help will be much appreciated

George

Hertfordshire / Sarah VYSE
« on: Sunday 16 July 23 16:30 BST (UK)  »
The birth of Sarah Ann VYSE was registered in Barnet as being on 19 Feb 1850 and, at her baptism on  03 Mar 1850, her parents are named as Edward and Mary Ann.

In the 1851 census, Sarah is recorded as being a 'Nurse Child', aged 1 year, in the family of David & Sarah SAMUEL and her birth place is said to be Barnet.

I can find no trace of her parents. Can anyone help, please?

Staffordshire / Margaret GOODWIN
« on: Monday 26 June 23 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Margaret GOODWIN of Kingsley married James ALCOCK of Cheadle on 02 June 1800, in Cheadle.

James was bap 31 Dec 1775 in Cheadle, but what about Margaret?

The only possibility I can find was bap in Kingsley on 28 Nov ???? possibly around the right time. Her father's name in the PR entry is almost illegible. I think it might be William.

In the late 1770's, fathers presenting GOODWIN children for baptism were George, John, Thomas and William. To my eye, the name in the PR looks more like William than any of the others, but I'm not happy by the way it ends.

Can anyone help, please?
