Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Accessing the 1841 Census for a particular street
« on: Friday 01 December 23 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening
I'm wanting to look at the 1841 census pages for the High Street Hull. I'd like to see if I can spot two of my relatives who may have lived there. When they married on 22 August 1841 the male (John Thompson) says he lived at 4 High St Hull and the female (Lois Heaton or Hayton) on the "same street". When I do searches in Ancestry for either of them they do not appear and yet the census was only a couple of months earlier. This is why I'd like to go through the record, page by page for the High Street.
Is there any way to do this?
Thank you!

Lincolnshire / THOMPSON family - High Street, Crowle, Lincolnshire
« on: Wednesday 12 December 18 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my great grandfather, John Thompson and his wife Lilly Thompson (nee Couch). The 1911 Census indicates that three children had been born alive although one had subsequently died. This latter death occurred between census's and I can't seem to find any record in births/baptisms via ancestry.co.uk searches.

Can anyone help?

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Crowle enquiry
« on: Monday 12 November 18 21:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the burial place of my paternal great grandparents, John Thompson (1879 - 1973) and Lily (Lilly) Thompson (1879 - 1957).
They lived in Crowle Lincolnshire. I have visited St Oswald's Church in Crowle but there are relatively few headstones. Also, although I was quite young, I was present at John Thompson's burial in 1973 and St Oswald's just doesn't look like the place I attended (both he and his wife died in Crowle).
Any help from local records would be much appreciated!

Yorkshire (West Riding) Completed Requests / George Ward -Pudsey
« on: Sunday 06 November 16 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've been researching the Ward family tree and have got back to George Ward (he was an ancestor of Sir Len Hutton the famous cricketer). Unfortunately records are thin on the ground.
Based on the 1841 and 1851 census it would appear that he was born somewhere around Fulneck, Pudsey around 1796 but I can't find any record and I can't identify his parents.

Also, he died somewhere between the 1851 and 1861 censuses (his widow is shown living with one of their children in Pudsey in the 1861 census). The only death I seem to be able to find is a George Ward of Woodville Terrace, Dewsbury (died in 1959) but this death (and the probate record) do not fit my George.

Any help on birth record and parents for George would be greatly appreciated as would any suggestions on the death record.

Thanks for any help you can give  :)

Hi

Been off Rootschat for some time.

I have been researching the life of Evangeline Laugharne. I've got to her death on 17th December 1908 at 9 Otley Rd, Shipley West Yorkshire but it is a strange death (fractured skull falling off a ladder whilst whitewashing in the middle of winter). There was an inquest (the very next day but many miles away in Pontefract, which seems rather unusual). How do I get access to the papers from the inquest (I can't see an option on ancestry).

As ever, thank-you for any help  :)

Hi

I've been researching my 2x greatgrandfather who died at the Alma Pub in Landore, Swansea aged 26 (actually on his 26th birthday).

I have a lot of information on Alfred but am having difficulty identifying whether he committed suicide! His death cert refers to "cerebral apoplexy - 2 hours Asphyxia". To cast more light on this I am looking to identify where he was buried and therefore whether he was interred on holy ground or not. I am also looking for any newspaper comment (I already have the announcement of the death from the Cambrian dated 16 April 1886).
I appreciate this is a tough request but any further information from RootsChat sources would be great.

Thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Help needed with John Thompson
« on: Monday 18 April 11 22:53 BST (UK)  »
I have many questions on this relative of mine and his close family!

I cannot find a record of his birth, but I know he married Lois Hayton on 22 August 1841.  They both lived on High St, Hull.  Any help with his birth details would be gratefully received.

Subsequently it appears that he and Lois moved to Thorne.  However, in the 1851 census Lois was now living in Thorne and married to William Bottom but had two children with her being Jacob Thompson (born abt 1845 in Hull) and John Thompson (born abt 1848 in Thorne).  In the marriage certificate she is shown as Lois Thompson (Widow).  I can find no record of his death yet this must have occurred somewhere between 1847 and the end of 1849 for her to marry again in June 1850. Any help would be great.

Then we have the two kids - Jacob born 1845 in Hull and John born 1848 in Thorne.  I am completely unable to find any baptism or birth record for these two.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Horsfields of Warley or Luddenden
« on: Monday 03 January 11 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Happy New Year.

I am researching my 4th great grandfather, George Horsfield.  I believe he married Elizabeth Spencer in 1810 and suspect he was born around 1890.  I have a few questions and would be very grateful for any help.

1 The only record I can find for an Elizabeth Spencer implies that she was born in 1795 which would have made her 14 or 15 when she married George - am I right? Does anyone have evidence of an earlier birth date (and parents names) or was such a marriage age legal at that time?

2 The 1841 census for Warley Upper shows George and Elizabeth with 6 children being John (1826) Elizabeth (1826) Jonas (1826) Peter (1827) Ellis (1829) and Spencer (1834).  However, other sources show a Richard born in 1810, William (1815), Mary (1816), Moriah (1817), George (1819), William (1820) ans John (1822).  I am therefore rather confused!  Clearly the earlier children could have left home prior to the 1841 census (for example George was married in early 1841). Any help in identifying the correct children for George and Elizabeth (commonly called Betty) would be great.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / The Booth and Lee families of Kirkheaton
« on: Monday 16 August 10 23:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am researching John Booth and his family and his wife who I believe was Hannah Lee.

According to IGI a John Booth was born in Kirkheaton on 23 Nov 1806 and christened on 28 Dec 1806.  His parents were Thomas Booth and "Betty".  John and Hannah were married in Kirkheaton I think but they seemed to subsequently live in Hepworth nr New Mill.

First question, does anyone have access to any information on Thomas and Betty (e.g. Betty's maiden name and when they were married).

Second question - I can find no information on Hannah Lee.  I have deduced that her surname is "Lee" from IGI but I can't find any record of her birth or the identity of her parents.  From the 1841 census I believe she was born around 1811.  There is a possibility that her maiden name was Wagstaffe as the grandmother of her son Benjamin is Elizabeth Wagstaffe (in 1851 Ben is staying with her and her daughter Eunice).

Then on to the interesting stuff.  Both John and Hannah seem to disappear after about 1847 (they have 7 children in the period 1830 to 1847: Walker, William, Ann, Eliza, John, Jonas and Benjamin but by the 1851 census they are all staying with other people.

Third question, what happened to John and his wife Hannah?

Any info would be very welcome!
