Cumberland / Whitehaven Town Mission and "slums"
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me the correct address for what my grandfather lovingly called the Whitehaven "slums". As children we would walk down from the Town Mission, down a series of steps with spaces that would have been the outlines of houses built into them, down to the docks. I believe my grandfather may have actually lived there as a child. Is it possible this is the Preston Quarter (as this also rings bells in my memory)? All very vague but it is years since I was there.

Also does anyone know which denomination the Town Mission is associated with? The one up on the hill overlooking the docks (Hensingham side?).

Europe / Immigrants to England from Northern Ireland
« on: Tuesday 19 July 11 13:08 BST (UK)  »
Is there any way of tracing when my grandmother, Maggie (Margaret/Peggy) McCleary came over to England from Northern Ireland? She was born and bred in Lurgan (dob 12/4/1902). She attended Queens University Belfast from 1920, possibly until around 1924, studying medicine (she didn't qualify - I checked with them). I know she married my grandfather in London in 1939 but have no idea of the years in between. Any ideas where to start?

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Egremont graves
« on: Tuesday 19 July 11 12:50 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to determine whether my great-grandmother was buried in Egremont. Her name was Fanny Jane Jeffery (or Jeffrey) (nee Gardiner). She died 4 April 1947. Father was John Gardiner. Mother was Sarah (nee Wilson).

Also her husband Richard Jeffery who died 19 November 1921.

Many thanks.

Cumberland / Garlands Mental Asylum

My great grandmother Fanny Jane Jeffery (nee Gardiner) was a resident at Garlands from around 1921 until her death in 1947. I have contacted Carlisle Records Office who appear to have details but cannot release them without NHS permission. I have requested this but have been refused under the 100 year rule. Any ideas on how to proceed? Any ideas where she might have been buried? She was originally from Whitehaven. I am based in Australia so have no way of visiting any local sites and would appreciate it if anyone could do so.

Cumberland / Sarah Sherwen or Sherwin
« on: Saturday 09 July 11 13:29 BST (UK)  »
I have a sampler made by Sarah Sherwen dated 1923 made in her 12th year (ie DOB around 1812).

I believe that she was related to my great-grandmother Fanny-Jane Jeffery (nee Gardiner) of Croft Cottage, Egremont whose parents were John Gardiner and Sarah Wilson (DOB 1845). I think the lady may have been Sarah Wilson's mother based on the birth certificate of the latter (parents John Wilson and Sarah Sherwin) but am having problems tracking her down. There is no address on the birth certificate other than Egremont. John Wilson is listed as a labourer which seems surprising given that the sampler is quite detailed and delicate - an unusual marriage?

In later years (eg Fanny Jane's marriage) the family seem to have been involved in the Wesleyan Chapel in Main Street, Egremont - does this still exist? is there a graveyard or other records?

Armagh / McCleary family - Lurgan
« on: Friday 08 July 11 02:10 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother Margaret McCleary grew up around Lurgan. She was known as Peggy or Mac for most of her life and moved to England where she married and remained. She was born 12 April 1902 to Boyd McCleary (a farmer) and Ann Jane Doak and was sister to Zeke and Santie (?) among others. Could anyone interested in this area please contact me (particularly KatC who has sent a personal message that I haven't found a way to respond to!).
