Moray (Elginshire) / Cross Roads, Knockando
« on: Monday 18 April 22 17:20 BST (UK)  »
Alexander Grant 1787 - 1791 was a weaver; he was born and lived in Knockando, Morayshire.

In 1841/1851 his abode was Cross Roads.
1861 abode Cottage Roadside.

Can anyone identify the area where Cross Roads might have been?

Antrim / William James Kyle
« on: Friday 14 January 22 12:18 GMT (UK)  »
William James Kyle, born about 1850 Buckna, he probably married Hessy C. Livingston, he was a Farmer of Buckna. Marriage 25 Sep 1868  Drummaul, Antrim, but I can find no children for them and no death on Antrim civil records, I believe they may have emigrated?

Some of his siblings went to Australia but I can find no evidence that he did.

His father was John Kell or Kyle and I have traced all of his other children.

Ireland / James Bennett, sailor.
« on: Wednesday 05 January 22 17:36 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help finding James Bennett, I guess he was born in Ireland about 1850 or so.

His son Matthew was born in Ireland but is on the 1901 census in Ayrshire Scotland, he marries there in October 1901 and is on the 1911 census with his family in Ayrshire. According to the census returns and his subsequent death in 1940 he was born about 1879.

Matthew’s marriage cert. States his father was James Bennett, a sailor and his mother Agnes Bolton, deceased.  On Matthew's death cert his parents names are confirmed, and his fathers occupation still noted as sailor. Both are now deceased.

Thanks in anticipation.

Nottinghamshire / Benjamin Briggs and family
« on: Thursday 12 August 21 18:51 BST (UK)  »
Benjamin Briggs 1762 in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire and died 1829 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. He married Ann Brown (Bown) 1 November 1785 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire.  1757 in Leicestershire and died 1842 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire

Their children were all baptised St Mary, Nottingham

Elisabeth Briggs 1791
Mary Ann Briggs 1797
Benjamin Briggs 1799 died 1883 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire.
John Brown Briggs 1801
Thomas Briggs 1803

In 1841 Annie 85 is living in Wood Street, Earl Shilton, listed as Ind. with a William Thompson and others. So after they were married I can only assume they moved to Nottingham, moving back to Leicestershire by 1829.

My direct line is their son Benjamin 1799, his wife noted on census returns Jane (Maiden name Clarke on their younger children’s births), but no marriage.  She was born 1800 in Nottinghamshire and died 1883 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. I have all their their information; on 1851 to 1881 census returns he is born in Nottingham.

I can not find anything on the other children, one possible exception is Thomas 1803, he may have remained in Nottingham and married in the County in 1828, unfortunately family search census returns just state he was born in Nottinghamshire. (Below)

I wonder if anyone can add anything.

Down / John Morrison born about 1865
« on: Thursday 12 December 19 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Morrison family for a friend, his grandfather was James Morrison
Born – about 1902 Belfast. May have died Mauchline, Ayrshire 1973 but age 68 might be wrong?

I have all of the information in Ayrshire but I am rather stuck on his parents noted below.

From his marriage record in 1920 Irvine, Ayrshire, James was noted as age 18 bachelor of 29 Seagate, Irvine, his father John Morrison was also a Railway Surfaceman, mother Elizabeth Marion? MS Todd. John appears on the Valuation Rolls at 29 Seagate in 1915/16

The family appear on the 1911 census at Bartonholm, Irvine, all noted as born Belfast
James is age 9.

In 1901 they are at Ballylisbredan (Ballymaglaff, Down), all noted as born County Down
John 38, Lizzie 38, John 10, Joseph 8, Lizzie 16, Hugh 2.

The 1911 census states they had 8 children and 7 were living, I think there are possible records in Newtonards on family search for the 5 children noted above but no detail, I suspect that there may have been others born in Down 1885 – 1889, or in the gap between Lizzie and Hugh?

No clear marriage for John Morrison and Elizabeth Marion Todd, whose mothers maiden name was noted as McCarthey on her death record when she died age 53 in Irvine 1918, John possible died Irvine age 75 in 1941.

Lanarkshire / Mary Forgie McCulloch born 1880
« on: Sunday 13 October 19 14:42 BST (UK)  »
Mary's birth record states, born 15 July 1880, father Thomas Forgie McCulloch, Ship Painter Journeyman, mother Helen McCulloch MS Glancey, married 22nd December 1969, Glasgow.
Registered Govan 21st July 1880.

Unfortunately I cannot find them on the 1881 census or later, can anyone help.

I do know that Mary married Patrick Connor in Govan 1904, he died 1925. According to the death certificate of Mary Forgie Connor, nee McCulloch, died in Largs 1972 when she was 91.

Ayrshire / William Stewart 1896
« on: Tuesday 10 September 19 15:11 BST (UK)  »
WILLIAM STEWART married AGNES MUIR GOODWIN 31 January 1919 Galston
Their son Daniel was born Galston later in 1919.

The following is on Family Search.

In 1926 Daniel and his mother sailed to St John, NB on the SS Montcalm
Their destination was 124 East 153rd Street. Destination 124 East 153rd Street., Harvey,  Illinois where William Stewart, was residing.

I do not quite understand the following sailing?

In 1829 Daniel and his mother were on the SS Duchess of Atholl - St John, NB, this time William Stewart is noted at 15534 Central Ave, Harvey, Illinois.

So I guess William Stewart left Scotland between 1919 & 1926, can anyone help with immigration records or anything else?

Scotland / Andrew Gillespie born about 1755 Highlands
« on: Wednesday 07 August 19 10:45 BST (UK)  »
I am stuck researching my friends Gillespie family in Ayrshire
This family below were the first Gillespie’s to appear in Irvine, Ayrshire.
Family rumour suggests Andrew was born in the Highlands, I guess sometime before 1760.
It looks likely that Janet below was baptised 1761 in Irvine, parents John & Margaret Fullarton.

ANDREW GILLESPIE married JANET FRANCIS 27/11/1778 Kilwinning
Banns also at Irvine 26/11/1778

Children baptised Irvine:
JOHN 5/09/1779, ANNE 23/12/1781, JANET 3/11/1783, ANDREW 26/10/1788,
HELEN 13/03/1791 + GEORGE born 3 April baptised Kilwinning 7/04/1793

Looking on SP the name Gillespie seems quite rare in the Highlands but a few in Aberdeenshire, several in Perthshire and Fife areas and further south.

In any event I cannot find a suitable Andrew Gillespie, can anyone help?

Regards Colin
