Ireland / Siblings with same names
« on: Thursday 07 September 17 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Over the years I have been researching my Family History, on a number of occasions I have come across families where siblings have the same first name e.g. Margaret born 1853 and Margaret born 1858. The children have the same Parents, same location, same church etc.

My immediate deduction was that the first sibling passed away before the second sibling was born and therefore the second sibling was named after the first. However, there are no records of the first sibling dying and that makes things confusing.

Cork / Death at Sea Records

My Great Grandfather Bryan O'Connor was a seaman all his life. He served in H.M. Royal Navy until about 1898 and continued to work on ships after that. The last record I have of him being on a ship is when he got married in 1911. He was crew for a ship called Medusa. The ship was docked in Bantry at the time and was used to calibrate guns. Unfortunately I have no further records of him after 1911. His son was born in March 1916 so I know he was alive at least up to 9 months before his son was born.
We were always told that Bryan O'Connor was lost/died at sea. This event must have happened between July 1915 and 1921. 1921 was the year that my Great Grandmother re-married. I have searched endlessly for a long time now.

Does anyone know how deaths at sea were handled in the early 1900's?
Where could I find records of his death?
Would it have been registered with his local parish?
Are there crew lists for civilian ships?

Anything that can point me in the direction of my Great Grand Father would be appreciated

Ireland / Death at Sea

How would I find records of an ancestor that died a sea?

I have always been told that my Great Grandfather died at sea when my Grandmother was very young. His name was Bryan O'Connor (or Connor) and was living in Glengarriff Cork. Before he retired he was a sailor with HMR Navy and I believe he was a civil sailor after he retired. From my research I am estimating that he died between 1915 and 1921.

He was married to Nora Shea in 1911, had a daughter, Mary O'Connor (my grandmother) in 1912 and a son, William O'Connor, in 1916. Nora remarried in 1922 to Timothy Crowley-Keoghan.

I have the marriage records for Bryan and Nora and the birth record for my grandmother.
I don't have the death record for Bryan O'Connor or the birth record for William O'Connor.

Is there any indication of when birth records from 1916 will be available on https://www.irishgenealogy.ie ?

If I can access a birth record of one of my ancestors it will possibly make a big break through on my Mother's side of the family

The Common Room / Coincidences in names and using logic
« on: Wednesday 23 November 16 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
Recently while searching my family tree I came across what seemed to be a dead end. I know My Great Grandmothers name was Annie Foley. Her son was named Thomas after her father (I presume).

I couldn't seem to come across Thomas Foley's (Annie's Father) parents until something came up in one of the other sites. There was a Thomas Foley born 1859 near Enniscorthy in Wexford which puts him in the right place and around the right date of birth.

This is where the logic or coincidence comes in. Thomas Foley's father was named Canice Foley. Annie Foley named her Son (my Grandfather) Thomas Canice. Should I assume that I have the right Parents for Thomas Foley using this logic. That maybe he was named Thomas after his Grandfather and Canice after his Great Grandfather.

Here is another question about coincidence. There are 6 children born between 1857 and 1871 to the parents Canice Foley and Dora (Dorothy) Lacy. 4 of those children were born in Wexford and 2 in Waterford. Is it likely that the parents of the 2 children born in Waterford are the same people originally from Wexford?

Next there is the Death of a Dora (Dorothy) Foley in Kilkenny and the informant of that death is again Canice Foley.

Finally there is the Death of Canice Foley in Dublin South and the informant is Thomas Foley.

Would it be safe to say that all these people are the same people and they may have travelled maybe due to employment?

If the names were John and Mary I would say they would be completely different people. But, Canice and Dora are not common names and the chances of 3 couples named Canice Foley and Dora Lacy must be extremely rare.

Armed Forces / 1901 & 1911 Royal Navy Census Records
« on: Monday 07 November 16 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about my Great Grand Father Bryan Connor (or O'Connor)
According to his Daughters Birth Certificate he was retired from H.M. Royal Navy (Ireland)
According to his Marriage certificate he was living on the Ship Medusa (I think) which I presume was docked in Bantry or Glengarriff, County Cork, Ireland at the time of getting married.

Since no Bryan Connor (or O'Connor) show up in the Irish census in 1911 I take it he was on the ship when the census was taken.

If anyone can help out it would be appreciated

Thank you

Alan

Cork / O' Leary, Daniel-Mallow, Co. Cork
« on: Friday 06 December 13 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently come across another branch of my family tree but I have little information on him.

His name was Daniel O' Leary Born in West Cork (around the Bantry area) and died 3rd April 1940 in Mallow. He was an officer in the Royal Irish Constabulary, stationed in Galway for a spell but died in Mallow resident of O' Brien Street, which we believe was the barracks for the RIC at the time.

He had a brother Timothy O' Leary

Thats as much information I have for now. Any information would be useful.

Thanks
