Lancashire / Manchester area 1794 why would Marines be in the area?
« on: Tuesday 31 December 19 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
hi
coming back to family history after a while! trying to put flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Trying to work out what/why would my 5 x g.grandfather Edward Porter a Marine based in Portsmouth and originally from Herefordshire be in Manchester/Blackley area in the first half of 1794? Where he met and married Alice Collinge (a weaver from Blackley) on 14 June 1794 in Manchester cathedral. The only reason i can think is the Marines were stationed in the area but why - what was going on? Cant imagine he'd be there for fun? Anyone with knowledge of details of Manchester for that year could throw any light on it? many thanks

Hi
For many years Ive been trying to find when and where my great grandparents died. They lived in Stanground and Fletton, Peterborough all their lives at least till 1911! In 1901 and 1911 they lived at
9 Great Eastern Railway Cottages, Fletton, Peterborough - Henry was a retired Railway Engine Driver then the trail ends. Would anyone know where there would be any electoral registers for that address for the years after 1911? i have searched all the BDM, Family search and ancestry and not found anything that matches either of them. Any help or useful suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks Jill

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Hooper family Ledbury 1841 untangling who is who?
« on: Wednesday 04 December 13 14:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone might see how to untangle this web?
My husbands 3x great grandfather John Merrell b.1800 Tibberton, Worcs married Ellen Mitchell on 14 May 1832 in Tibberton. In all the census between 1841 and 1881 she states she was born in Ledbury abt 1806. In 1841 her daughter Sarah Mitchel was living with them from her previous marriage to John Mitchel they also had a son called John Mitchell born in 1828.  In the 1841 census I think he was living in Ledbury with Richard and Mary Hooper. Richard Hooper was not local.  I think these could have been John's grandparents? On IGI I have found a christening for a Nelly Hooper in Ledbury on 21 July 1805 but parents were Richard and Jane Hooper. Is this Ellen? There were 7 other possible siblings christened between 1796 - 1809. There was a marriage between Richard Hooper and Jane Ambler in Ledbury 19 April 1796. But where does the Mary in 1841 census fit in? There was also a birth for Mary Hooper 29 April 1803 to Richard and Mary Hooper and in 1841 census there was a Mary Hooper living with them.  It seems unlikely that Jane and Mary are the same people as Jane's baby Anne was christened on 4 July 1802 and Mary's baby Mary christened on 29 April 1803? Cant find a death for Jane Hooper in Ledbury either? Richard and Mary both seemed to die in 1843. Love to know more about the Hooper's - where did Richard come from and was Jane Ambler Ellen's mother?

Hello
Would any one be able to look up the marriage of Frederick Gwynn to Mary Adams in Ombersley on 11 Oct 1880. I am trying to find out who his parents were so hoping his father's name will be on the register? His birth was registered in the second quarter of 1855 Droitwich vol 6c page 373 but not found a christening record on the IGI. I have found him in the 1861 and 1881 census only. In 1861 he was living with my husband's 3 x great grandmother Elizabeth Gwynn in Ombersley and in turn she was living with him and his family in 1881. They were related as Grandmother and Grandson but I dont know which of Elizabeth's children was his mother or father.
Hoping not to resort to spending money on birth/marriage cert!
Thanks. Jill

Hi
Looking for any information about my 3 x great grandfather in law Robert Wood whose children were born in Clifton on Teme (first child I can find is Ann Wood b.1799). Robert's wife was Susannah who was a widow in 1841 and living in St Martin, Worcester with her eldest daughter. I do not know where Robert and Susannah married or where they were born?? Trying to find the death of Robert and presuming it is in Worcestershire between 1809 (when their last child was born and 1841 census) A poss record on family search is Robert Wood buried on 7 February 1820 in All Saints Parish, Worcester it states place of residence Turkey!!! Can anyone shed any light on this please? Why would he be living in Turkey and buried in Worcestershire? or any other information about Robert and Susannah.
Thank you

Armed Forces / 24TH FOOT - India 1811 - 1828 David Marks
« on: Monday 26 November 12 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to get a bit further back with my 4 x great grandfather David Marks - all I know was he was in 24th foot regiment in India when he was father to my 3 x great grandmother Martha Marks in 1811 and 3 other daughters who all died before 1818 also his wife Mary who died 20 Sep 1818 in Dinapore (from India family records site) he seems to have remarried in Cawnpore, India in 1821 to Jane Pyott and she remarried in 1829 as a widow. But cannot find record of his death in India presumably between 1821 and 1829.
Where can I find his army records to see when and where he died. Also would like to know when he married Mary and what her maiden name was?
Even better would be to know when and where he was born - presumably somewhere in England?
Many thanks in advance for any leads!!

Hi

My 5 x great grandmother was Alice Collinge b.1769 Blackley, Lancs the christening records for that period only shows fathers name - James Collinge - Weaver.  I would love to know if there are any records kept about the weavers - ie were they members of a guild that would have more details about them?

Alice married Edward Porter in 1794 in Manchester Cathedral. He was a marine based in Portsmouth and he was born in Much Dewchurch, Hereford in 1755 how did they meet was he sent up to Lancashire to quell rioting of the weavers?

Although Edward served with the Marines until 1814 they ended up living in Coventry were there eldest son James was also a Weaver - are there any records kept in Coventry of Guilds etc and was it a better living in Coventry then Blackley?

Alice, Edward and their 2 youngest sons Job and Charles all moved back to Blackley where Alice and Edward died in 1825 and 1828. In 1841 James carried on as a Weaver in Coventry. In 1841 Job was a Dyer, his wife Mary and daughter Alice were Weavers.

I have also found other members of the Collinge family in Blackley who were weavers, dyers etc so would love to know more about the life of a Weaver in Blackley and Coventry.

Thank you.

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Marriage look up Chastleton 1837
« on: Monday 28 May 12 11:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Would love it if someone could look up the marriage of Daniel Webb and Martha Slatter in Chastleton in 1837? I am trying to find the parents names of Daniel. He was born in Long Compton, Warwickshire but cant find any christening records for him either on Family Search or Ancestry as they have the Warwickshire parish records now. So this is my last hope of getting back another generation!

Much appreciated.
