Ayrshire / James King McKean (1915-1974)
« on: Friday 02 January 09 18:54 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for any descendants of James King McKean. He would've been my father's half brother, from a previous marriage. His existence was completely unknown to us until recently, and any information would be greatly appreciated.

James King McKean was the only son of Charles John McKean and Louisa Mary Huyssen KING. They were married on 16 Oct 1914 at 59 Clifford Street, Govan. It's not known whether Charles, my grandfather, ever returned to Glasgow after serving in WW1, but she was granted a divorce on 4 Nov 1922. Louisa later remarried Thomas Alexander Hall sometime after 1931.

James King McKean was born on 28 Jan 1915 at 35 Elizabeth Street, Govan, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. About Apr 1974 he was an Area Manager at Aerated Water manufacturers. He lived at 33 Oswald Road, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland about Apr 1974. He died of Cerbral Haemmorage & Hypertension on 11 Apr 1974 in Heathfield Hospital, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland.

James King McKean and Isabella Muir AULD were married after Mar 1954. Isabella Muir AULD (daughter of Thomas Hunter AULD and Jeanie GUNNING) was born on 21 Jun 1907 at 58 McCalls Avenue, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. About Aug 1931 she was a Telegraphic - Sub Office Assistant. She lived at 51 Woodfield Crescent, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland about Aug 1931. She died of about 1985 in Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland.

It's not yet known whether James had been married before his marriage to Isabella, or whether there were any issues.

Is there any news of the release of the Marriage Indexes up to 2006 on ScotlandsPeople?

I was so excited when the Birth and Death Indexes were released, but notice the Marriages haven't yet caught up, even though they stated "the marriage indexes will follow shortly".

The Common Room / Maiden Names on Marriage Certificates
« on: Monday 09 July 07 21:07 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone else experienced the bride giving her mother's maiden name on the marriage certificate, rather than her own?  I have two cases, on completely different branches of my tree.

My great grandmother was shown as Mary Ann Trim, a widow aged 22 on her marriage certificate in 1881.  Her father was shown as William Osborne Ivey, so I knew Mary Ann's maiden name.  It wasn't until I found her father William's marriage certificate, that his wife's maiden name was revealed, Amelia Trim!  Now did Mary Ann marry a Trim?  I've found no marriage recorded, or death of Mr Trim.

On another branch Susannah Andrews married my great great grandfather James Read in 1853.  Her older sister Mary Ann Masters witnessed the ceremony, and in the section to record the father's name it showed 'Mother's name Charlotte Andrews'.  Why wasn't her father Thomas Masters shown?  He was still alive at the time at the time of the marriage, and both he and Charlotte lived together for nearly 60 years, with their 10 children.   Perhaps Thomas wasn't her father, although he and Charlotte had been married 4 years by the time Susannah was born?

I wonder if both women misunderstood what the meaning of maiden name meant?  Or did the clerk misunderstood what he was being told?  Either way, I wonder if anyone else has experienced this anomaly?
