London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Stubbornly refusing to be found!
« on: Friday 11 January 13 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. My paternal G GF and G GM seem to have spent their whole lives under the radar. After what seemed like an eternity I have confirmed details of GGF. James Henry Peters, often Henry, sometimes James, occasionally Harry - born 1869, London (Craven Street in 1871). But my GGM, Ellen Reynolds, often Minnie, was probably born in 1872 in Essex. But I cant confirm which one she is, nor can I find any record of their marriage. I have paid for a professional genealogist to search for her, but that came back empty. If they didnt get married is there no way of me ever finding her?
Any ideas please, I'm officially desperate now! Many Thanks, andy

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Is it possible they never married?
« on: Monday 23 August 10 13:37 BST (UK)  »
The biggest problem with my family tree is on paternal g g/f and g/m.

He was Henry James Peters, though I have recently discovered he was christened James Henry.
He married (allegedly) Ellen Reynolds, who half the time liked to be called Minnie.

I have Henry's birth certificate. b 17 Dec 1869 in Shoreditch
1871 Census notes him as James Harry, but at the same address. So far, so good.
1901 Census has him married to Ellen - 3 years his junior- born in Colchester
They even have a dau, Rosie, aged 2. living in Clerkenwell.

I have both their death certs too. Henry died aged 88 in Billericay 1957 (moved there with 2nd wife)
Ellen died during pregnancy in 1914, as Minnie Ellen Peters, aged 42, in St Pancras
My g/f birth cert has Henry James as father, and Ellen (formerly Reynolds) listed.

I have searched and searched and paid out for GRO 5 year searches left right and centre. I cannot find a wedding between the two anywhere!

freeBMD has nothing that I can see. IGI neither. I no longer have Ancestry, but I know I would have searched it when I did.
Is it possible she just took his name without getting married?

Many thanks
Andy

« on: Friday 20 August 10 10:47 BST (UK)  »
Many years ago I went to see my Great Aunt for family stories and info. She gave me a great deal of worthwhile stuff.
She dug out a box with a tree written on it. I copied it in hope that at some point my tree would join up, but it doesn't.

Here it is:

George Barber,
son was John Barber, of Burton Hall in parish of Brayton - bapt 21/08/1673
His children
John Barber, bapt Ryther, 1692
Ann Barber, bapt 1695

John married Maria Hall of Barlay. Married at Brayton Church 07/06/1722
Ann married Joseph Denton(Yeoman of Ryther) at Weighill (Wighill) nr Tadcaster 06/03/1715

John and Marias children
John Barber, bapt 30/07/1723 at Selby. Married Margaret Matthews
Thomas Barber

Ann and Josephs children.
"?" married William Robinson at Sherburn-in-Elmet, 20/08/1759
Ann married Richard Firth at Bolton 1747
John married Ann Garbut at Fenton 03/07/1751

There is a little more if anyone is interested

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Birth/Baptism lookup - PETERS, Bulkington
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 19:00 BST (UK)  »
After goodness knows how many years, I have traced one branch back to James PETERS, born December 1828 in Bulkington, Warks. Father was William, mother Jane. He had 7 sisters. Elizabeth, Jane, Sarah, Anne, Eliza, Maria & Emma.
I have his date of birth as 28th December, but not sure from where. Could someone verify this please? And his mothers maiden name would be fantastic. Anything else would be whatever is better than fantastic.

Many thanks
Andy :)

Family History Beginners Board / Death at Sea
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My grandmother told me that her grandfather died at sea off the coast of New Zealand. I know he was born in 1851 (have BC), and his daughter was born in 1874 (he was very much alive then as he married his wife a few days later!). But, thats it! Any ideas where I can go from here?

Many thanks

« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 14:53 BST (UK)  »
I have VENEMENT/VENNEMENT in my tree and would be interested to know what the origin was. I am currently working on a complete list of all VENEMENTs on Jersey from census information, and would be happy to share if wanted.

Family History Beginners Board / The tender subject of illegitimacy!
« on: Thursday 29 July 10 19:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone. Ive ignored one branch of my tree for years because my grandmothers birth certificate shows no father. Is there any way of finding out who he was? Ive heard of Bastardy Rolls, but I dont think they are available for 100 years ago. Im worried this might be a dead end.

Many thanks

PS Ive spoken to all living relatives who either didnt know or wont say. :-\
