The Common Room / Problem finding a 2x great aunt
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I'm trying to find what happened to some ancestors where I've come up against a brick wall and I'm hoping some 'fresh eyes' maybe able to help!

The one I'm looking for at the moment is my 2x great aunt Rosina Thompson. What I do know is:

Born: 1869 Bedminster, Bristol
Baptised: 26th March 1870 Bedminster
Father: Edward Thompson
Mother: Elizabeth Hanford

The last document I found her in was the 1891 census, living with her parents, Victoria Road, Bristol. Her father is shown as a licensed victualler. Her occupation was shown as a school teacher, which I hoped would help me, but it hasn't. Her father died 1896 but I've not yet been able to confirm when her mother died.

I've tried to discover if she carried on teaching or married but I've not been able to narrow it down to anyone it could be. I'm probably missing something obvious but would appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction!

Many thanks

The Common Room / Harris family in Somerset (married into the Pope family)
« on: Monday 01 May 23 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I seem to have come up against a 'brick wall' in my family tree research regarding my 3x great grandmother Sarah Anne Harris and her ancestors.  Here is what I do know about her.  (I have found plenty about her husband John Pope's ancestors but struggled with Sarah's):

 - Sarah Anne Harris married John Pope on 31st Jan 1842, Parish Church, Long Ashton, Somerset.

 - They were both of full age, living in Long Ashton at the time of marriage, Sarah's father was called John Harris and a ship's carpenter.

 - Neither could sign their name so the marriage record is marked with an X.

 - One of the witnesses was a Sarah Harris who I thought may be her mother (she also signed with an X).

 - I've tried to find Sarah Anne, her father John and the witness Sarah Harris in the 1841 census in Somerset but not found any probable matches.

 - I've also not been able to find Sarah Anne's baptism record or a marriage record for her father John.

 - Later censuses show Sarah Anne's birth place as; either Pill, Somerset or Ashton, Somerset and her year of birth varied from 1812 - 1815.

 - She died 1878 and was buried 19th May in Bedminster, Bristol (where she lived after her marriage).

So, although I have quite a bit of information for her after her marriage I would love to be able to go back further to her parents, grandparents etc, and to find out what happened to her father John and who her mother was.

Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks
Sue

World War One / WW1 Pension records
« on: Saturday 07 January 23 12:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - Happy New Year!

Can anyone advise please where I can see my grandfather's WW1 Pension Record, he was shot in France in 1914 and was discharged the following year due to disability. I found his records via Ancestry in the WW1 Pension Ledgers and Cards index but to view it I had to go to Fold3. However there was then an additional subscription to pay to actually see the record (and that's in dollars).

Is this the only way I can see this please as I'm struggling to find it elsewhere.  (I can't find it on Findmypast either.)

Thank you for your help.

World War Two / WW2 Land Army Girls
« on: Saturday 12 February 22 12:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to find out any information about when and where my mum served with the Land Army to add to my family history.  She sadly passed away a few years ago but I remember a few details she told me.  (She was given a long overdue Land Army Service badge in 2008.)

It would have been in around the Bristol and Gloucestershire area and I seem to remember her mentioning a Lady Bathurst.  I've tried researching that name online but can't find any reference to the Bathurst name and the Land Army.

I've contacted the National Archives who suggested I contact the Imperial War Museum.  I've emailed them but it will take some time as they are busy.

Meanwhile I wondered if anyone else has done any research about the Land Army Girls who maybe able to help.

Thank you in advance.
Sue

P.S. Hope I've posted this in the correct area.

World War One / Great uncle killed in WW1 - query
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Can anyone please help with the information I have managed to trace for, hopefully, a great uncle.  (It’s been hard to find due to the name Thomas Smith.)

Copied below is the information I found on FindMyPast for soldiers who died in the WW1.  I’ve also attached the medal card from Ancestry which seems to match this and another record which again appears to match his death.

Can anyone with their expert knowledge suggest anything new from these records for me, especially the codes on the medal card.  Also, the supplementary notes below mention a Gloucestershire regiment?  (As he was from Bristol that would make sense.)

I really would appreciate any help to confirm what became of this ancestor as he has eluded me for a long time and I’m hoping this is him.

Best wishes

Hello

Can anyone help with advising the occupation on two documents please.

They are both from parish marriage records, the first one in 1905 and the second one in 1934.

(The first one is strange as I understood he was in the army from 1903 to 1907, when he was discharged medically unfit, so I would have thought his occupation would have been a soldier in 1905.  And on his enlistment in 1903 his occupation was a lath render.)

Many thanks.

Hello

Can anyone please advise whether this is a WW1 or WW2 uniform and what regiment the soldier would be in.  (He wasn't wearing a cap.)

Many thanks for your help

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Parus burial record
« on: Sunday 09 June 19 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Can anyone decipher the handwriting on the attached burial record please?

I can read the person's name, abode, date and age but it's the notes added underneath I'm struggling with.  (I can make out 'She belonged to..' but not much else.)

Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation on marriage record
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 12:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've just found my 6 x great grandparent's marriage record in 1713.  It reads: Nicholas Slade of Wellow, then a word I can't make out before his wife's name Mary Collins.

Judging by the other marriage records on the same page, the word would be his occupation, can anyone help please?

Many thanks.
