Australia / which High School for boys from Carramar
« on: Sunday 14 April 24 10:24 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone with knowledge of the Carramar area (SW Sydney) is able to assist.  I would like to know the names of possible high schools that a teenage boy from Carramar was likely to have attended during years 1950 to 1956.

I guess Liverpool is one possibility but wonder if there were others that I should search.

Thank you for any suggestions

Wiltshire / Who is a 'kinsman' ('kinswoman')
« on: Friday 08 September 23 08:12 BST (UK)  »
I have looked up the official definition of 'kinsman', etc. but am keen to learn about practical (real) relationships that others may have come across.

The term is used in a number of family wills and is distinct from the mention of 'sister', 'brother', 'cousin', 'nephew', 'uncle' etc.

Have you come across this term yourself and, based on your research, have you been able to identify how the 'kinsman' was related? (eg, was he a half-brother or similar?)

Thanks

I have located the following entry in the "British Army, Worldwide Index 1861", via FindMyPast:

William Kerr  /  Service No.   696  /  Rank: Private  /  Unit or Reg't: 1st Btn 12th Foot (East Suffolk) 1st Detachment  /  Reg't stationed at: Otahuhu New Zealand  (TNA ref:  WO12 / 2983)

I would like to know more about this man and hope someone can direct me to any records which might reveal additional information.

Thank you

Australia / Access to NSW criminal record - charges & convctions
« on: Tuesday 09 July 19 12:02 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to have access to / view an individual's NSW criminal record for period 1945 to 1970?

He was convicted and was imprisoned on more than one occasion, both as a juvenile and as an adult.  It is 40 years since his death; I have a copy of his death certificate as proof.  (Also have copy of his birth certificate.)

Given that convictions can be, and are, reported in the media, I am wondering whether court records are available, and what details would be given.

Ideally I'd like to view his entire 'record', ie those where he received a non-custodial sentence as well as imprisonment, but anything would be a start.

Where / who do you suggest I apply to for access.

Thanks heaps
Shorty

Attached is a copy of part of a very lengthy inventory of 'goods & chattels' taken in 1669 in Wiltshire.  I have been able to decipher almost all of it but one particular item, which I've highlighted, is a puzzle.

What does it say?

Any assistance will be gratefully received.

Thanks

An Inventory of Goods & Chattels, dated mid 1600s, lists what seems to be "One Corn whitche, furnace one ...." in the kitchen.

What would have been (or what is) a corn whitche (or witch)?

I have found reference to an old occupation called a "Whitcher", which was supposed to describe a "maker of chests".  As such I wonder whether the corn whitch was a bin to store grain, but this is just a wild guess on my part.

I would love to learn more about this 'thing'.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / He is a 'what' & Gentleman?
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 07:29 GMT (UK)  »
The attached snapshot is from a 1708 burial register.  Despite the clear handwriting I cannot determine what the entry says about Thomas Rowborough.  Please see word below the red X.  It looks like there's an apostrophe at the end of the word so wonder if it was abbreviated?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What are their names?
« on: Sunday 26 November 17 05:39 GMT (UK)  »
Please see attached snapshot of a register dated 1830s.  I am interested in the names of the couple who are listed on the 4th row.  What is Elizabeth's surname?  Is Mr Moore's first name Daniel, David, Dennis or something else?

Help in deciphering these names will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
