London and Middlesex / Trouble tracking down a 1891 census entry
« on: Thursday 21 March 19 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
Evening all,

I'm having trouble tracking down my 2x great grandmother Ann Keen in the 1891 census.

Ann was born in Bloomsbury in 1874 to Stephen and Eliza.
In 1881 she's living with her widowed mother at 42 Kenton Street.
She marries in 1895, and gives her address as 324 Gray's Inn Road, Camden.

I've tried name variations eg Anne/Annie and some alternate spellings of Keen, but haven't had any luck as yet.

What am I missing?

Cheers!

London and Middlesex / Westminster Inquest 1907
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 16:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

The death certificate of my 3x great grandfather Charles Ayres states that he was a railway passenger guard, who sadly died after a fall from an engine plate. The date of death is 4th Nov 1907, and the informant is the Coroner for Westminster. An inquest date of 7th November 1907 is given.

This is the first inquest I've come across in my research, and so would appreciate any advice regarding next steps.

Regards

Sam

Essex / Which cemetery?
« on: Thursday 01 June 17 16:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am looking for the final resting place of my 2x great grandmother Mabel Stinton, who passed away on the 3rd July 1931. I know from her hospital records that after her death her body was to be delivered to the undertaker at Holy Trinity Church, Hermon Hill, South Woodford. This is also the church she was married in.

Unfortunately the parish records at the ERO contain only baptisms and marriages for Holy Trinity, Hermon Hill, as there was no graveyard attached to the church. Searches of all three of the big monument inscription websites came up empty too.

How do I proceed with my search for the correct cemetery/burial record for Mabel?

Kind Regards

SJJ

Evening all,

I am currently researching the military career of Arthur Stemman, who is believed to be the brother of my great great grandfather Charles William Stemman.

Searching the 'UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949' revealed that Arthur served with the 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) during the Second Boer War. His regimental number was 5283, and he was entitled to the following medals:

- Queen's South Africa Medal (Clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Laing's Nek)

- King's South Africa Medal (Clasps: South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902)

Could some kind soul please search the 'British Army Service Records 1760-1915' for Arthur?

Thanks in advance,

SJJ

Essex / Searching for a death record...
« on: Friday 17 February 12 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings Chatters,

I'm currently searching for the death of my 3 x G Grandmother Fanny Stinton (nee Gifford), born around 1844 in bethnal Green. She is alive and well on the 1901 census living with her husband William Stinton at 1 Loy Court, Wanstead, Essex. However after that she vanishes.

William died in 1910 in South Woodford. Has living with his son and daughter-in-law (my 2 x G Grandparents), and his death was reported by another one of his sons. Therefore I assume Fanny is already dead at this point.

Theoretically this gives a -/+ 10 year window for the death of Fanny. All searches so far have drawn a blank. Stinton is commonly misspelled during transcription, and I have tried to include all concieveable alternate spellings in my searches. I am hoping someone with a keener eye than myself can pick out the correct record.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

SJJ

Essex / Stinton family
« on: Thursday 14 July 11 04:57 BST (UK)  »
Greetings to all,

I am currenly researching my great great grandparents from my maternal grandmother's side of the family. I have traced their lines back further, but would like to know more about this family in particular. My great great grandparents were Henry William Stinton and Mabel Constance Ayres. They seem to be from rather different backgrounds. Henry appears to be from a line of costermongers, and Mabel from a relative wealthy family of merchants and manufacturers. Below is the information I have manged to gather so far, as well as a few queries:

Information known so far:

Henry William Stinton born 30th Oct 1875 in Leyton, Essex to William Stinton and Fanny Gifford. William is recorded as being a licensed hawker. Towards the end of his life he is known as Harry.

Mabel Constance Ayrees born 19th Feb 1881 in Reading, Berkshire to Charles Ayres and Emma Sims. Charles is recorded as a brick manufacturer employing several men.

The marriage date is uncertain. There is a possible marriage between a Henry Stinton and a Mabel Ayres in 1900, however on the 1901 census Mabel Constance Ayres is listed as single. She can be found at an address in Streatham, London working as a draper's assistant with around 30 other women between the ages of 17 and 25. I cannot find henry on the 1901 census. There is another possible marriage in 1905, but his seems unlikely as my great grandmother was born in 1903.

From asking relatives we know the couple had 6 children. We think they were born in this order - Edith, Nellie, Henry/Harry, Florence, Alfred, Winnifred. We have guessed at dates for their births, the only certain birth is that of my great grandmother Nellie in 1903 in Woodford, Essex.

Mabel died in 1931 in Brentwood Mental Hospital in Essex. At the time the couple were living in South Woddford. Henry died in 1940 in Theydon Bois Essex. He was recorded under the name of Harry Stinton.

Questions:

When did Henry and Mabel get married, if they were married at all?
Can we verify the existance of all 6 children, by pinpointing their births?
When was mabel sent to mental Hospital, and what would the level of medical treatment have been like at that time?
Is it possible Mabel was simply suffering from depression rather than a more serious condition?

Notes:

I do have a tree with most of this information on ancestry, however as previously explained most of it is guess work. Also I am currently working in a gold mine in Kazakhstan until the end of August. This means I am 5 hours ahead of UK time, so replies may be at odd hours. Lastly, I only have internet access during office hours (mon-fri).

That's just about everything. Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

SJJ.

World War One / Lookup - Pte T.G.Stemman, MGC
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Hey everone,

I'm currently researching my great grandad's activity in the Great War. Here is what I know so far:

+ Thomas George Stemman was born on 22nd October 1898 in Holborn, London.
+ Family are aware that he served in the army during the war, no specifics are known.
+ On ancestry he is mentioned only once. This is in the medal roll index.
+ The record states the following:

Regiment - Machine Gun Corps
Rank - Private
Regimental number - 119706
Medals awarded - British War Medal and Victory Medal
Medal roll reference - MGC/101B72 for both
Page number - 5822 for both

+ There is no mention as to theatre of war, enlistment date etc.
+ He survived the war and went on to life to a decent age.

I wonder if it would be possible for anyone to check the orginal medal rolls on their next visit to the archives in Kew? I would do this myself but I am currently working in a gold mine in Kazakhstan until mid August.

Also any other information/advice about my great grandfather would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

SJJ.
