Suffolk / Sims family
« on: Tuesday 05 February 19 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
I was initially curious about Denys https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=807549.0 as I was unable to trace his family but thanks to the help of fellow RChatters his family seem rather more interesting.

The birth registrations for both Harold & Denys were seemingly in Brighton
Birth: Jun Qtr 1919 Brighton 2b/258 Harold A SIMS.  MMN: Anderson
Birth: Mar Qtr 1921 Brighton 2b/317 Wilfrid D G SIMS.  MMN: Anderson (aka Denys Guy Sims)
There is a marriage also in Brighton Sep Qtr 1918  2b/668 Arthur SIMS Doris ANDERSON

I know that Denys was killed in 1941 when the bomber he was in crashed in Scotland.  I also know he was an ARP warden in the village.

Their mother Doris seems to have ended up as Evelyn Guy Sims, living in Oakley Suffolk with a history of out of control German Shepard dogs.  Husband Arthur later referred to in newspaper reports as "Commander George Sims" Diss Express 17 November 1944 seems to have disappeared fairly early on.

Harold Arthur Sims is referred to in newspaper articles of the time as "the first American" to be awarded the MM in WWII.  31 July 1940 Newcastle Journal. The Lancashire Evening Post goes on to refer to him as the Grandson of Admiral W Sowden Sims who commanded the US Navy in European waters during the last war BUT Admiral Sims married in 1905 one Anne Hitchcock so any offspring from that marriage were unlikely to have fathered a son in 1919.

Can anyone help by shedding any more light on Doris (aka Evelyn) , Arthur (aka George), or indeed Harold Arthur Sims 321186 Trooper/ L Corp Innisk Drag Guards. Evelyn Guy Sims died in 1969 age 77 Hartismere RD, Suffolk.

Can anyone please help me with my quest to identify further the history of those named on the parish Roll of Honour.  I am unable to find out anything much about this chap other than the info below from the CWGC website, an entry on the British Newspaper Archive about a memorial to him & 3 others at Mellis church in 1948 & a couple of entries (1952 & 1961) from the same source referencing his mother and incidents with out of control dogs.  Evelyn Guy Sims appears to have died in 1969 age 77.

Denys Guy Sims Remembered with Honour Runnymede Memorial
Sgt 958216, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died on 21 March 1941 Age 20
Son of George and Evelyn Guy Sims, of Oakley, Suffolk.

Suffolk / Harry HUBBARD
« on: Saturday 03 November 18 09:13 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help with more details on this man.  He is named on the Roll of Honour in our Church (Mellis) as having served in the Army Service Corp during WW1.

I suspect he is Henry Harry Hubbard  1915 age 23 Suffolk Reg 18243, residence Diss & 11 Batt Essex Reg 42481 residence Diss

Married to Mary Jane Nunn in 1913 he died in 1973 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVCB-T9ST & his DOB recorded as 28 July 1891 but nothing on BMD records coincide with that DOB?

The nearest I can find is a Henry Hubbard in 1886 DecQ Hartismere & this is probably Henry Hubbard age 14 son of  Edward & Maria Hubbard of Wortham 1901CR.  Neither the year or month of birth are anything like that recorded on the death registration of Henry Harry. However Henry of Wortham seems to have morphed into Harry age 24 when he is with Ellen Hubbard age 66 born Mellis.

Could be the same chap but I am not convinced yet - so many Hubbards in this part of the world:)

Suffolk / George Thurkettle Brown
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 11:45 BST (UK)  »
I am fairly certain George (592495, 1st/18th Bn., London Regiment (London Irish Rifles).
Died on 26 March 1918) was the son of John & Eliza Ann Brown who lived in the nearby town of Eye according to the 1901CR George was born in Yaxley.  The anomaly I have is that he is mentioned on the Roll of Honour in the Memorial Hall but not on either of the two Rolls of Honour that hang in Mellis Church.

Trying to ascertain whether his parents had moved to Mellis after 1901 or indeed he had been living/working there before enlisting. Do his military records give any clues?

Many thanks

Suffolk / George Brown, Mellis
« on: Tuesday 23 October 18 11:16 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone will be able to help me trace this chap.  All I now for certain is that he was a Private in the Rifle Brigade & that he died during the Great War as he is remembered on the Roll of Honour in Mellis church. Sorry I have no idea of his age but I assume he must have lived in Mellis prior to enlisting.

I have found a George Brown, b 1889 Burgate (neighbouring parish), parents George & Eliza but am unable to confirm whether or not this is the same chap.

I haven't found an entry on the CWGC website either as there are an awful lot of George Brown's so it would really help if I could find a George Brown who had some connection with Mellis to narrow the field with an age etc.

I have all the others but would be exceedingly grateful for some help on this one.
K

ps.  Also found George Brown c1884 Burgate son of Robert & Phyllis.  Interestingly there is only one Brown burial in Mellis up to 1900, Harriet Brown 83 of Yaxley in 1884, so there is a good chance he was born outside the village.
