World War Two / Victor James MELLETT, Royal Engineers BEF, Dunkirk 1940
« on: Saturday 30 September 17 07:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am after some assistance in tracing my Great uncle's service in the Royal Engineers and his subsequent convalescence.  It is only by accident that I found he had served in the Army prior to joining the Merchant Navy.

His name was Victor James Mellett (b. 1906) and from my research I found in a local newspaper article that he joined the Royal Engineers in 1939 and was wounded during the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.  He was discharged on 11 Nov 1941.  Unfortunately, that is all I can find.

Following his discharge he joined the Merchant Navy as a carpenter and was involved in the infamous Russian convoy PQ17 on the SS River Afton.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Bedfordshire / Boness Family of Biggleswade
« on: Monday 11 October 10 23:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone help me with some details of my maternal family line.  My grandmother was Sylvia Joan Boness (b. 1927 in Back St, Biggleswade) and all I can find are details of her mother is her maiden name of Stevenson.  My Mum seems to recall her first name as being Flora and her grandfathers name as Leslie? Could anyone please possibly help start me off with any information.  I don't wish to go down the route of ordering birth certificates yet if the information could be sourced elsewhere.
Kind regards,
Dale :)

Canada / Alfred Joseph Mellett - Why Emigrate?
« on: Sunday 03 October 10 19:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am researching my family tree and noticed that my great uncle, Alfred Joseph Mellett (b. Dec 1903 @ Northampton) emigrated to Montreal, Canada during May 1920 on the RMS Melita.  His intended occupation was electrical engineer in Montreal.

Could anyone help me understand why a 16 yr old would emigrate on his own to Canada in 1920?  Was there any financial incentive to do so after WW1?  Does anyone have any details of what he did on arriving in Canada?

Regards.

I was told that they all were born and lived in church street, stevington and were buried in the church yard, however, having visited the church I found no trace of graves!

Hi,
I am researching the family history of my great grandfather, James Mellett.  He was born in 1875 in Preston and following his discharge from the Army in 1902 he moved into Park Lodge, Ridgemont around 1909 with his wife Elizabeth, sons Cecil, Alfred, Victor and daughters.

James was employed by His Grace the Duke of Bedford and his sons on military records/ emigration records list Cecil & Alfred respectively as footman and sawmill worker.

Can anyone help me in trying to find out about their time in employment with the Woburn estate.

Thanks.

Mayo / Mellett Family in Co Mayo
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 09:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am tracing the family history of my paternal great grandfather whose name was James Mellett who was born in Preston, Lancs in 1875 to Irish parents John Mellett (b. 1841?, Co Mayo) and Bridget Lyons (b. 1846 Westport?, Co Mayo).  John parents were named Michael and Winifred.

I beleive that the Melletts travelled from Ireland to England either in the 1840's or 50's as they first apppear on the census in 1861.

Can anyone help me with records from Ireland, in particular where my ancestors were from.

Regards.

Armed Forces / 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regt, Boer War
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 09:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am researching the military history of my great-grandfathers career. He served in the 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regt between 1891 & 1902.  During the Anglo-Boer War he was apparently serving as Mounted Infantry and was severely wounded at a place called Sandbaker.  Does anyone have any information regarding the 2nd Bn during the Boer War, in particular the Mounted Infantry.
Regards.
