Tyrone / Anyone related to this Anne Hamilton of Newtownstewart
« on: Tuesday 23 June 20 23:20 BST (UK)  »
Looking for info on Anne Hamilton, widow, who married William Fulton, widower and tailor, 18 Nov 1851, by license at Strabane Registrar's Office. Both of Newtownstewart.

I would like to find out if her 1st married name was Hamilton, or was that her maiden name? The date makes finding records difficult - I lucked out finding the 2nd marriage on IrishGen.

Armed Forces / HMS Arrogant circa 1801
« on: Wednesday 03 July 19 20:34 BST (UK)  »
[Please tell me if I have chosen the wrong forum for this question.]

I have an image of a will written aboard the HMS Arrogant on 10 April 1801 by a Richard McIlray, in which he bequeaths all he owns to a shipmate. It's a beatutiful thing and I would love to learn more about him. He is a part of my One-Name Study of the surname McElrea and normally I would not spend so much time on one person, but it intrigues me.

Are there any records I can search that might tell me more about him or where his ship was at that time?

Thank you,
Kathleen

Warwickshire / Married at sea? Where would it be recorded?
« on: Friday 23 November 18 05:48 GMT (UK)  »
Wasn't sure where to post this. If there is a better place, please let me know.

I am helping a friend look for the marriage of her great-aunt. Ethel (M?) Neale b. 1883 in Coventry, fa: Abraham, mo: Catherine. She was a nurse. Married Cecil James Robertson b. 1877 in Buenos Aires, fa: Jorge Robertson, mo: Juana (Janet) Lawrie.

They might have met and possibly married on a ship between South America and England, possibly around 1923. Where would that kind of marriage be recorded? We have not been able to find a marriage anywhere else.

They traveled quite a bit - we have found their Brazilian immigration certificates and their names on several passenger lists.

Ideas would be appreciated!

Lancashire / Southport - 72 Upper Aughton Road 1914
« on: Friday 10 August 18 01:57 BST (UK)  »
This is not an urgent request, but if someone has access to a directory for this address, I would like to know the name of the occupants in 1914. I tried the 1910 census, but I'm not convinced it was the same people (a Fielden family.)

My husband's father was born at that address and we don't understand why, as it was away from their home. Perhaps a relative lived there, which would give us some more information.

Thanks,
Kathleen

Lancashire / How many times did Elizabeth Hannah Hargreaves marry?
« on: Saturday 14 November 15 05:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have a puzzle as follows:

Elizabeth Hannah Hargreaves, born ca 1869 in Stacksteads, Bacup, Lancashire had six children:

1. Clara Page Hargreaves, 1888
2. Sarah Page Hargreaves, 1889
3. Joseph Page Hargreaves, 1891

In 1891, they were all residing with Joseph Page, single, in Nelson (Burnley) - Joseph and Elizabeth listed as the parents of the three children.

In 1901, Elizabeth was enumerated as a housekeeper in the household of Walter Johnson, still in Nelson, now with three more children:

4. Fred Hargreaves, 1893
5. Edith Hargreaves, 1897
6. Walter Hargreaves, 1899

In 1911, Walter Johnson, head, married, is living in Nelson with Fred, Edith, and Walter. No Elizabeth - instead a servant by the name of Alice Dawson. The children are all now bearing the surname Johnson.

I did obtain a marriage certificate for Walter Johnson and Elizabeth Hannah Hargreaves, dated 1903, register office Burnley.

Here is where it gets really weird.

According to the marriage certificate, Elizabeth is a widow, and her father's name is Roger Platt.

So, did Elizabeth get married and widowed sometime between 1901 and 1903?

Was her maiden name Platt and did she marry someone named Hargreaves - giving that name to all her children?

Or was it the custom for a previously married woman to put the name of her deceased husband in the spot for her father's name? (I found a marriage for an Elizabeth Hargreaves and a John Thomas Platt in 1903, but this seems to be just a coincidence - Hargreaves is very well represented in the area).

Because her name is common, I have not confirmed her birth and parents. The only reason I have as much information as I do is because, bless her, she named her children in a way to make it easier to trace them.

This is my husband's great-grandmother and I would really like to find her before and after the census records.

Thanks for any ideas that might help.

Somerset / BARLEYCAMP surname?
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone ever heard of this surname? I get no hits on any UK indexes, though the 1880 US Census records Henry BARLEYCAMP as being born in England, along with his wife, Lucy CHIVERS. I'm working through different spellings, but have had no luck as yet. I'm wondering if it could have been recorded wrong on the census (the writing is pretty legible) due to an accent, etc.?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1841-51 Cliviger area - COOPER
« on: Monday 28 January 08 04:15 GMT (UK)  »
The COOPER family lived in and around Cliviger, Cornholme from 1853 until at least 1910.
I have just obtained the marriage certificate of John COOPER and Mary LOMAX m. at Chapel St John's Holme (per certificate) in 1853. Mary was the daughter of Robert LOMAX and apparently underage as she married "with leave."

I have searched many times for John in the 1841-51 census and failed. I now learn that his father was Robert BERRY, so he might have been living with either his father's family or his mother. Any of the "possibles" I found of the right age and birthplace - Darwen circa 1826 - are probably no longer relevant, since I was looking for him as the son of a man named Cooper.

This is a real puzzle for me, and I would appreciate help finding him in these years.

Thanks,
Kathleen

Tyrone / 1901 Census Jeannie HUNTER
« on: Monday 05 November 07 20:45 GMT (UK)  »
I might be asking too much, if so, just tell me.

We have two letters from a Jeannie HUNTER written 1917 & 1919 from Lisnafin, Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone to family in New Zealand. We can tell she was an adult, but do not know if she was married. Someone in the NZ family visited her there during WW1.

I was wondering if this is enough information to try to find her in the census, if someone would be so kind.

She signed herself as a cousin to our FULTON relatives, and if we can identify her, we might be able to clarify the relationships of so many of our Fulton families. They intermarried quite a bit and it's a real headache, since they often use the same names. I can't tell you how many William Fultons are in this line!

Thanks for any help you can give.

« on: Thursday 22 December 05 05:13 GMT (UK)  »
Would appreciate very much a lookup for the following in 1841 Timsbury:

CHIVERS, George (should be with Emma, George, Jane, Elisha) -- they are at Bloomfield in 1851-61

Also, LINTERN, Joseph (possibly with Mary, John) nearby

Thanks and Merry Christmas.
