and
Mary E. Shale nee Riley. (mother Cowan) born 1925.

Both births were registered at Morpeth.

I wondered if anyone out there has knowledge of them.

Thanks.

Ireland / Patrick Riley son Patrick Riley
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 19:54 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please?
I have the marriage certificate of Patrick Riley (born about 1871) and Elizabeth McMenan. Married in Gateshead, England in 1888.

Patrick's father was also called Patrick, but I can't find out where Patrick junion was born. NK Ireland on census returns of 1901(Scotland) and 1911 (England). No luck finding them in 1891, (probably in Scotland).

Patrick junion was obviously in England in 1888, but their children were born:

Thomas Rilay 12,  England (1889)
Maggie J Rilay 9, Hamilton, Lanarkshire (1892)
Mary Rilay 6, Blantyre, Lanarkshire (1895)
Olven Rilay 2, Ireland   1899
John M Rilay 1, Shotts, Lanarkshire  (1900).

Thanks,

Bill.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Middlesbrough birth request
« on: Saturday 11 December 10 11:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.

Is there any way to find a birth by searching the mother?
Beattie Miller gave birth to a girl in 1905 (I think).
The birth took place at Mrs. Nolan's, Oxford Street, South Bank, Middlesbrough. The child was given the name May Johnstone, but efforts to locate her failed.

Help please.

Bill.

Durham / Help please with a frustrating search.
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
William Elliott, a police officer, was born in 1811 according to the 1841 census and living Ferryhill, Merrington, Ferryhill.
My search of the 1851 census has come up blank.

In the 1861 census, still a police officer, he's married to Jane and living in Victoria Place, St. John, Newcastle.

William is still around in the 1871 census, still a police officer, living in Edward St. Westoe, South Shields.

He moves around a bit, but where was he during the 1851 census?  If anyone has any information which might help me I'd be very grateful.

Ps. The birth certificate of one of his children Joseph Leadbitter Elliott, 1862, gives William's occupation as Inspector of Railway Police.

Family History Beginners Board / Johnstone mystery
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 17:51 BST (UK)  »
I've been searching for years now for information on May Johnstone born in August 1905. I believe her parents were Thomas Johnstone and Beattie Miller. She may have been born in Middlesbrough, Durham, England.

I know that she lived in Villa Place, Newcastle, England as a child, and attended a convent school there. The 1911 census has a May Johnstone at 21 Villa Place, Newcastle, however her parents are named as William and Mary. I think these may have been her Grandparents because she was brought up by her Grandmother.

If anyone can help me find more information I would appreciate it.

Thanks.
Bill.
