Northumberland / Prudhoe: Travers John HEAGERTY.
« on: Saturday 17 December 22 15:29 GMT (UK)  »
I know nothing about Prudhoe apart from that it is part of the best English county. :) I have always enjoyed watching " It's A Wonderful Life " with James Stewart and others. Yesterday, on Tyne Tees news was a report relating to Prudhoe and a blue plaque placed in the town.
The report was about Travers John Heagerty, b. 5.3.1874 in Prudhoe.  He was a well know English actor prior to emigrating to Hollywood, where he found fame as the angel Clarence Odbody in the above mentioned film. His stage/actor name was Henry Travers.
I wonder if there are any Heagertys, or other relatives still in the Prudhoe area.

The Lighter Side / Sad, but then a happy ending.
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 15:34 BST (UK)  »
William Elliott was an orphaned choirboy in Sunderland, 1897.  He left a handwritten note in a church in Sunderland, hiding it away in the pews.  It was found just recently and it was reported on BBC News/North East& Cumbria. The note asked that anyone finding it would think of him. Since the tv mention researchers have found that he emigrated to the USA at the age of 19 years, joined the US navy, serving in WWI/WWII and rose to the rank of Commander.
If you access the BBC site you will see a fuller picture than what I have posted.

Roxburghshire / John Corrie. WWI. Hawick connection.
« on: Monday 06 July 20 14:53 BST (UK)  »
Sunday 5th July, on PBS America, I watched the programme 'Tunnels of Death: The Big Dig.' At some stage there was mentioned John Corrie, and a reference to his diary and letter(s), which were sent to a female friend who lived in Hawick, after he was killed. I did not catch her name, but apparently she died about 1999(?), never having married, and she was buried with his photograph.
A search today shows that he was born in Dumfriesshire, and possibly worked in Hawick, and may have played rugby for Hawick Greens.

The Stay Safe Board / MOT tests for cars.
« on: Friday 05 June 20 14:38 BST (UK)  »
This may be helpful to some. My MOT expires later this month. From media reports I learned that an MOT could be extended by 6 months (without re-test) due to the current situation. Searching online at the Govt. site with my reg.no. I could not find any useful information re my vehicle.
I phoned my garage re the matter, and was told, " Yes, you can defer the test by 6 months, but when you have your vehicle re-tested, then that re-test certificate WILL ONLY LAST 6 MONTHS. The government has not disclosed that fact."
I asked the garage for the solution to this problem - result - they can book me in for an MOT, as normal, before the end of June.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Shears Inn, Hightown, Liversedge.
« on: Monday 29 April 19 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Somewhere in the news, - papers or whatever, this weekend, The Shears Inn, Liversedge, caught my eye. (I lived in Heckmondwike in the early 1960s.)  It is planned to demolish the Inn and build houses on the site !!! :(  From living in that area I learned it was the beginnings of The Luddites. and that the Shears Inn was their meeting point.
An absolute shame that such an historic building should be destroyed.

World War One / HMS Ballinderry WWI.
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information on the ship HMS Ballinderry in WWI.[There was a ship of the same name built during WWII].  Have recently received photos connected with my Grandmother's cousin who was in the Royal Navy Reserve in WWI.  One photo is of a greetings card for Christmas & the New Year.  It is not dated, but appears to relate to WWI.  It is signed by Andrew D. Vinell, together with the name -
"HMS Ballinderry."  I have googled the ship's name but the only result I get refers to the WWII ship.
Can anyone help re the WWI angle ?

Technical Help / Malwarebytes - Any one having problems ??
« on: Wednesday 29 March 17 13:53 BST (UK)  »
I have had Malwarebytes installed for a few years, but today I could not access it.  I uninstalled it, then downloaded it again, BUT downloading the supposed 'free' version I have been getting the premium trial version.  I wiped that, then went to another site for the free version.  Again the premium trial version was downloaded.
I found the Malwarebytes free to be excellent, but at the moment it seems as though any download results in their premium version trial.
Any ideas or suggestions ?

Roxburghshire / Welsh family, of Hawick.
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 12:38 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information re the Welsh family in Hawick, or that area.  Two possible ancestors may be John Welsh, born 1865 in Hawick; and also Catherine Welsh, born 1867 at Hawick. I presume they are brother and sister.  A few weeks back I found John Welsh (b. Hawick) on a census for the Fife (?) area.  I believe I found that on the Scotland's Peoples site.

Technical Help / windows XP laptop. Can I move to Vista ?
« on: Saturday 07 March 15 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Windows Vista laptop, 5yrs old. My first computer, and self taught on it.  I have been given an Acer laptop which runs Windows XP.  It seems slow compared with the Vista, but does have a sticker showing " Windows Vista Capable".  I am in possession of all the discs/dvd's which came with the Dell Vista.  Will it be an easy job to install the Vista system using those discs, or will it be a bit too complicated for me ? (Aged 70+)
I appreciate I would lose all data, etc on the Acer relating to XP, but presumably a backup of everything to an external hard drive (using Macrium Reflect backup) before I start any 'upgrade' would save files, photos, etc.
If it will not be any easy job for me, then don't be afraid to say so. :P
