World War Two / Convoy WS 12X
« on: Monday 05 December 16 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
I quote:    This is the most extraordinary  convoy of the WS  series of convoys,  and possibly the most interesting convoys of WW2.

The British 18th Division  arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia  in early November 1941  and   embarked  on United States Navy troop ships.
Their initial destination was believed to be Basra.

Note that  the United States    was still neutral at that date.
See www.naval-history.net    and then search for WS  convoys
Lord Haw Haw  seemed to know about their voyage across the Atlantic towards Capetown.   It was  transmitted  from the Tannoy of one of the ships  that their  Troop ship  had been sunk.

« on: Monday 21 November 16 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
There was a discussion earlier today about NHS numbers.

There is now a new system of NHS numbers, but for a period between 1955 and 1995  the NHS number was allocated on th birth registration. See Wikipedia for details

The Common Room / Discussion about the definition of "Maiden Name"
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 23:21 GMT (UK)  »
Reading another current thread,      it has prompted me to ask the question:     Do GRO registrars   have   a very complicated definition   of  the expression "Maiden Name"

Are there  other   ways   that  a woman can change  her surname other than by marriage?

and in the era of civil partnerships   does the wording on death certificates need to be revised?

World War Two / Facts about the Royal Navy
« on: Saturday 03 September 16 12:41 BST (UK)  »
I have been told by a retired RN man that the Meditteranean Fleet used  different shade of  battleship grey paint than the Home Fleet.  Because of the different weather conditions and different colour of the sea.

Are there any other interesting facts abou the Navy?

Not many left now, but those who are still here may be pleased to talk about it now.

Ask them if they still have any photos
