United States of America / Louisiana death cert 1910
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 00:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi. Two related queries:

1. Is it possible to order a 1910 death cert for someone who died in New Orleans in 1910?

and

2. What information would such a cert contain? In particular, would it name the parents of the deceased?

Thanks in advance,
Frostyknight

The Common Room / Does anyone know of any current Ancestry special offers?
« on: Wednesday 17 June 20 23:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi. My Ancestry subscription ended in mid May. I was wondering if anyone knows of any current special offers, as the only subs I can find are expensive - 69.99 for 6 months UK/Ireland or 99.99 for 6 months worldwide sub  :o. I should say I tried the link in a previous post in the Common Room -
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/offers/subscribe?dna=crossAct
but just get the above offer.
Thanks in advance,

Lancashire / Roman Catholic records in Manchester Church of St Francis
« on: Wednesday 01 April 20 20:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi.Can anyone tell me if there are any Roman Catholic records on line for Manchester? Specifically, I am looking for marriages at the Church of St Francis, Gorton, Chorlton district in 1875. I have the official marriage cert, but am hoping if the church records are online, the mother's name may be there.
Thanks in advance,

Technical Help / what type of laptop to buy?
« on: Monday 31 December 18 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
The battery on my 9 year old laptop has failed.  I've been advised that it's not worth investing in a new battery. While the laptop still works while plugged into the mains it's not portable any more. Therefore I need to purchase a new one. After speaking to salespeople in various shops, I'm now confused - there are some with "ordinary" hard drives, and some with SSD drives. The latter are what the salespeople are recommending (pushing). My problem is the storage on SSD's seems to be a maximum of 256 GB, which seems very little (this old laptop has 500 GB).
So I'd be grateful if anyone has any opinions on what type of storage I should go for. Is there much to be gained from going with an SSD drive?

I'd be very grateful for any/all opinions. Thanks in advance  :)

Ireland / Sean Ross Abbey - man finds family after DNA test
« on: Friday 01 June 18 23:05 BST (UK)  »
I thought you might be interested in this story, which was on RTE news tonight. This man was adopted and sent to America by the nuns of Sean Ross Abbey. Despite his efforts to trace his origins, and his birth mother's efforts to trace him, it was only following a DNA test that he found his birth family in Ireland. By which time his mother had died. There was no help given by the church, as usual.
Here's the link to the report:

Technical Help / adobe reader
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Until recently I was able to print directly from a PDF without having to save the file first, which is what I wanted to do. Now, I have to save the PDF first. Any tips on how I can go back to having just one step instead of 2 or 3? I haven't changed my computer/browser. I'd be very grateful for any advice.

The Common Room / Civil records (BMD) in Ireland
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 22:22 BST (UK)  »
Interesting article on Irish genealogy news today. Older civil registrations will appear on irishgenealogy.ie from next Thursday, 8 September. That's the actual entries, not just the indexes.  :) :)

http://www.irishgenealogynews.com/

I'm really looking forward to this, I'm hoping to solve a couple of mysteries.

I posted here rather than on the Irish board, because I know a lot of you have Irish ancestors.  :)
Cheers, Frostyknight

Ireland / Valuation Office Dublin
« on: Wednesday 16 September 15 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I'm thinking of paying a visit to the Valuation Office in the near future and I was just wondering if anyone knows if photographs of the books are allowed?
Thanks, Frostyknight
