Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / M Christian - newspaper scan image
« on: Saturday 18 March 23 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, can anyone help improve this photo which is taken from a scan of a newspaper article from 1975?  It's clearly a very bad digital scan of a black and white photo, of Mabel Christian wearing her Mayor's badge of office.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hello, I am trying to identify the inscription on aged headstones and struggling.  I have taken the photos with an iPhone so have high quality images I can zoom into and also invert the colours with but neither of these methods are helping at the moment.  Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!

The grave is for Edward Robert Elmhirst Duckering who died in 1948.

Hi, can anyone help with putting a potential date range to this photo?  Found amongst my aunts photos when she died, we are unable to identify anyone in the photo which was most likely taken in Hull as it has photography company W H Duncan of Anlaby Road Hull on the back.  Any ideas welcome!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / COMPLETED. Help with 1881 census entry
« on: Friday 02 November 12 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am struggling to read the detail on this 1881 census entry from Scarborough.

I'm trying to establish the occupation for the first entry, James Harford - I think the second word is Southcliff which relates to an area of Scarborough...  I also cannot read the place name after Lincolnshire under where born?

Jumping down the list to the eighth entry, Alice Ann Howlett, she is listed as a lodger but I am trying to establish what is written in the condition as to marriage field?  Any ideas appreciated.

Many thanks

Completed Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Requests / Amy Kirman 1906 in 1911?
« on: Saturday 12 May 12 09:09 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find Amy Kirman born 1906 in the 1911 census.

I have found her father, Charles Walter Kirman (born 1883) and he's with his father Walter (born 1859) and step mother Fanny (previously Gardham) on the 1911 return - although Charles married (and is listed as married on this return) Amy Ibbetson (born 1886) in 1904.

I think the strong possibility is that Amy is with her mother Amy for the census but I can't find any Amy Kirmans...

I believe Amy (born 1906) was born in Hull
and I believe her mother Amy (born 1886) was also born in Hull.
Father Charles (born 1883) is listed as born in Hull on the 1911 return and is living in Hull.
His father Walter (born 1859) was born in Lincolnshire, in 1911 he's in Hull

Any ideas or help appreciated!

Can anyone help me decipher the second line here?

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking at the 1891 census return for Titchfield/Fareham, reference RG12/884/95/14.

It's a household of two people, William and Emma Matson (transcribed incorrectly as Matsen) and the writing appears to be a rushed scrawl!

I cannot decipher the address as it appears to be the name of the house rather than the street, the schedule number is 79 and it looks like 'The Mouse' or "The Mount".

I think the next household is in 'Chapple Road' and the previous ones 'something Green'.  Any suggestions appreciated!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation on census in 1871 (COMPLETED)
« on: Saturday 12 March 11 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to decipher the occupation for John Hubbard, age 16 on the 1871 census and living in Hull at 4 Rose Court (Walker Street?).  Reference is RG10/4794/98/39.  First word Wood, second word appears to being with an L and possibly ends with 'man'?  Any ideas would be appreciated!

The Common Room / Confused - unable to find marriages!
« on: Friday 11 March 11 17:56 GMT (UK)  »
Researching the Matson family tree, I am having some problems making sense of the following and wonder if anyone could provide any pointers?

On the 1871 census [RG10/4782/37/14] there is a Robert (born 1822) and Sarah Matson (born 1824) living together along with a George H Tennison (age 19), described as their son-in-law.   This would suggest that they have a daughter who has married George.

Forward ten years to 1881, [RG11/4758/75/2] we have Robert and Sarah this time with George R Tennison (age 4) visiting, who is their grandson.  This also adds up, in that their daughter and George have had a son.

Also in 1881, the daughter is recorded [RG11/4757/149/15] - Mary E Tennison (age 27) is living with George H Tennison (age 29) and George R Tennision (age 4) is also recorded with them.

The difficulty I have had is finding records of Robert and Sarah getting married, Robert and Sarah having any children and George and Mary getting married!  The only record I have for a Robert Matson and a Sarah getting married is in 1867, but this is a Sarah Tennison which is strange given the context, however it could be an error or it could be fact!

I cannot find Robert and Sarah with children of their own on any of the census records I have managed to find.

I also cannot find a Mary Matson marrying a George Tennison, my only tenuous  search here has found the possibility that this is Mary's second marriage.  I have found that Mary Watson is recorded as marrying John Harper (1868) and then Mary E Harper marrying George Tennison (1874) (from BMD records) and it's tenuous but Watson could be a transcription error.

To add to this complicated family, on the 1901 census, [RG13/4467/113/30] George R Tennison (now 25)is again with his grandmother Sarah (age 77 - still recorded as married) and this time is joined by his sister, Winifred (age 23) who is recorded as born in Dublin - all the other people mentioned here are recorded as born in Hull.  I suppose if George and Mary lived and married in Ireland perhaps this would explain why I can't find records on Ancestry?

If anyone has any thoughts I'd appreciate them, and apologies if this should really be in the census forums as it's heavily census research based.  I think I'm too lost in this to make sense of it when it might all be very obvious really...  I've just typed this all out again as well as I lost the first version so apologies if I don't make sense anywhere!
