Technical Help / Can't access Rootschatfrom UK
« on: Saturday 17 August 13 16:59 BST (UK)  »
For the last couple of hours I have been unable to logon to Rootschat from the UK because of what appears to be a DNS issue, but I have now logged in from another country via another method.

Do I need to do anything to fix this, or should I just wait for amendments to propagate?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Clutching at straws....
« on: Friday 15 March 13 19:03 GMT (UK)  »

Please let me have your thoughts on the following.

While transcribing my 16/17th family wills, I saw that forenames
sometimes began with a capital letter, and sometimes not, but gave
no more attention to it than I would to surname spelling variations.

Recently though, I noticed on reading the digital image of a burial
register, that each forename starting in lower case was an infant or
minor and conversely, each forename starting with a capital letter
was an adult, at least in all those cases where it was made plain
from the comments on the entry itself.

My question therefore is, could this be an idiosyncracy of a
particular writer or locality (Forest of Dean), or was it a convention
of the times that a child was so recorded? This may have implications
for me in using the wills to separate two collateral lines of a family.

I will be testing this idea using the data I have access to, but in
the meantime, wonder if anyone has noticed anything similar themselves.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Novus annus consultum perfici

Topic title per Google translate, so it's probably wrong.  ;D ;D

A quick run through the Rootschat Search feature indicates
that this is the board where queries about Latin are best
and most frequently answered.

I am going to begin learning Latin and would very much
appreciate any and all suggestions on how to go about it
properly, since the smattering I have picked up in the
course of transcribing is not good enough.

On the minus side, I am slow, and a bit thick, with no
formal language training, but on the plus side, patience
and determination usually get me through.

An autodidact by nature, I would prefer a good reference
work with plenty of tests and model answers, plus a good
dictionary, but would not object to a taught course,
either online or correspondence as long as I could set
the pace.

Looking forward to your recommendations.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date and enhance photo please.
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Please date the attached photo and if anything at all can be done to
improve it, that would be a real bonus.

The photo is on cardboard, measuring 2.5 by 4 inches.

Sorry it's only 400 d.p.i., Rootschat wont accept  600 although only 480K.

If anyone would prefer to work with a higher resolution, I can produce
1200, but would need to email it .

Thank you.

Hi.

This is not meant to be a technical question.

i am looking for opinions or advice from everyday users
of genealogy software, not techies.

I have loaded my family tree into PAF, the LDS program,
but am beginning to find it limited in several respects.

I therefore intend to move to a commercial product, and would
like to know if anyone has transferred their data from PAF, and
if so, to which product? Did it go smoothly and without any loss?
Is the product easy to use? Does anyone use more than one product,
for example because one is good for data entry, but another is
good at say producing charts? How good are the printed reports?

I know that there is a GEDCOM 'standard' for this data interchange,
but I have heard it said that not all products adhere to it, and
some have proprietary extensions to it, which is why i am concerned
about choosing the appropriate product.

Any thoughts you would like to share would be very much welcomed.

World War One / Please identify uniforms - Photo now attached
« on: Saturday 25 December 10 02:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.

I only have a scan of a photocopy I'm afraid. This is late WW1, since
the child sitting on her mother's lap was born 5 Nov 1916.

I dont know the soldiers' names, but it may help to sort out who the
groom is if you could please identify the uniforms.

Thank you.

« on: Friday 24 December 10 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.

Please can anyone suggest a possible, explanation, of the strange
pair of baptism entries below, provided by FreeREG?

Better yet, does anyone have access to the originals, who has
time to check for any notes made in the register please?

They are both for St. Mary the Virgin, Bruton, Somerset.

03 Mar 1814, Amelia, Female, Aquila and Elizabeth Farthing, Bruton, Soldier.
27 May 1814, Amelia, Male,   Aquila and Elizabeth Farthing, Bruton, Soldier.

Thank you.
