Cornwall / Herbert Cumberland Wilson family

I am trying to discover what became of Herbert Cumberland Wilson's first wife and daughter.
HCW was born Truro in 1861, GRO Reference TRURO Q1/1861 Vol5c Pg178 mother's maiden name Carnell and Cornwall OPC baptism 31 Jan 1861 St Clement son of John and Jane Dolling Wilson of Penair, butler. I have him in the 1861/71 Censuses in St Clement and in the 1881 Census in Marylebone.
He married Mary Ann Elizabeth Morehen, born 1857 in Wadenhoe, Northants, on 23 Aug 1881 Christ Church Marylebone though it seems that they also married 10 Nov 1885 at the Strand Register Office… She was a servant in the 1881 Census in St Pancras.
Daughter Bertha Anne Cumberland Wilson born 1884, GRO Reference ST GERMANS Q3/1884 Vol5c Pg40 mother's maiden name Morehen and Cornwall OPC Baptism 22 Jul 1884 Landrake and St Erney daughter of Herbert Cumberland and Mary Ann Elizabeth Wilson of Saltash, accountant.
HCW served 211 days in the Royal Artillery before purchasing his discharge but have so far found no dates. He then rejoined on 20 Feb 1885 as Private #C/6054, Commissariat and Transport Corps but his military records show him absent without leave by 08 Mar 1886 supposedly due to the death of his wife.
I can find no trace of wife or child after this so hope someone has better luck than me.
He then turns up across the Atlantic by about 1890 spending time in the USA and Canada and getting married again and having at least 2 more children but that is another story…

Northamptonshire / Berrills, the family that built Bozeat

Dear Rootschatters,

My maternal great grandfather was William Berrill, mason, born Bozeat in 1843, and his father was Thomas Wykes Berrill, mason, born Bozeat in 1818.

I have recently received from New Zealand (!) copies of a series of articles published in "About Bozeat" in 1986 under the title "The family that built Bozeat" written by the Rev Norman Palmer (not related to me as far as I know). Both these gentlemen are mentioned in the article along with many other Berrills but it seems that there may have been further items relating to the Berrills published later. The last article I have makes reference to the future publication of Gloria Wallis's family tree, of an article by John Berrill, great grandson of Levi Berrill, and possibly pages from the Berrill Family Bible (from Dennis Perkins?).

If anyone has copies of these articles, my contact in NZ and myself, would be very interested to hear from them. I would also be interested to hear from any other researchers into the Berrill family.

Unwanted Birth, Marriage, Death Certs H to M / George Alfred HEADLAND Birth 1914 Woodford, Northants

I have unwanted birth and death certificates for this gentleman who I wrongly thought to be my uncle by marriage.I had always thought he came from the Thrapston area but now I know my George Headland was from Dallington.

I have available for George Alfred HEADLAND a birth certificate showing born Newtown, Woodford on 17 April 1914 and a death certificate showing that he died at 17 Morris Avenue, Rushden on 8 April 1987.

Northamptonshire / Sgt William Palmer - Northants Regt

Hello from a newbie to this forum.

I hope I have posted this in the right place because it is a mixture of Northamptonshire and military… If it would be better elsewhere please feel free to move it.
I would already like to thank contributors to previous discussions on the Northants Regiment that have helped me fill in many gaps already.

I am researching the life of my grandfather Samuel William David Palmer who was born at Pilton on 2nd Nov 1867.

At some point between 1881 and 1891 he became Sergeant William Palmer #1669 of the 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment.

Q. When and how? I assume he must have joined as a private?

In the 1891 census he is shown as Sgt William Palmer age 23 born at Oundle in Barracks at Aldershot with the 1st Northamptonshire Regiment.

Q. Would this be Salamanca Barracks, Wellington Lines, Aldershot where I assume he arrive probably on 28th (or 29th?) Nov 1890?

He married Louisa Norris at the Parish Church, Farnham, Surrey on 3rd Sep 1892.

Q. Would I be right to assume that he and Louisa sailed with the 1st Battalion aboard HMS Malabar from Portsmouth on 4th (or 5th?) Oct 1892 routing via Malta, Port Said and Suez before reaching Bombay on 1st Nov 1892 and that the battalion then moved inland to their new base at Bangalore arriving there on 19th Nov 1892.

Daughter Florence Isabella was born at Bangalore on 21st Jan 1893.

Q. They probably arrived at Secunderabad on 11th Dec 1895. I understand the barracks were actually at Trimulgherry (today written Tirumala Giri) just to the northeast of Secunderabad?

Daughter Ivy Miriam born at Trimulgherry (today written Tirumala Giri), Secunderabad in 1896.

He took part in the Tirah Campaign from 9th Sep 1897 until 31st Dec 1897 and so was entitled to the India General Service Medal 1895 with Punjab Frontier 1897-8, Samana 1897, and Tirah 1897-8 clasps. I have the London Gazette reports on this action but can see no mention of him.

Q. When and how did he and the family return from India to the UK?

In the 1901 census he is shown as Sgt Samuel W Palmer born at Oundle age 33 in Barracks in the Parish of Saint Sepulchre, Northampton with the Northamptonshire Regiment along with Louisa, Florence and Ivy.

Q. I assume that he then went to South Africa, presumably with the 2nd Battalion, as he was entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal 1902 with Cape Colony clasp for troops who served in the Cape Colony between 11 Oct 1899 and 31 May 1902. When and how did he go to and from South Africa?

He became a Colour Sergeant (when?) and was entitled to the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

Son (my Father) William Sidney was born at Northampton on 18th Aug 1904.
Daughter Gladys May was born at Northampton on 9th Dec 1906.

Q. My father and Aunt Gladys were born at the Barracks but was there more than one at Northampton as I have found Quebec Barracks at Wootton but Dad always talked about Weedon Barracks?

In the1911 census the entire family is shown at Daventry.

Q. Does this mean that he has retired from the Army? Dad thought he did some recruiting and maybe training during WWI. Any ideas?
