Somerset / Matthew LONG 1804-1878
« on: Wednesday 26 April 23 19:19 BST (UK)  »
Can  anyone find out anything about a Matthew LONG, "Gentleman", aged 74, who died in Bath on the 18th Nov 1878 at 8 St Mary's Buildings.  The informant was his niece Emma Elizabeth EDGECUMBE and I believe that address was where Emma's mother, Elizabeth EDGECUMBE nee LONG, Matthew's sister, was living.  Another brother was a James LONG who was a Hairdresser in Bath. Their parents were James & Elizabeth LONG who in 1841 were living in Weston, Bath.  I think that Matthew married a Sarah CLIFT but know very little of his life or where he lived. Would love to know more and where his father, James LONG was born.  Thank you.

London and Middlesex / George WINGRAVE - 1811 - ?
« on: Thursday 16 March 23 14:34 GMT (UK)  »
George WINGRAVE was born in Middlesex about 1811 - his father was Joseph WINGRAVE and they were Oil and Italian Warehousemen.  George married Sarah PRIMER at Cheltenham in 1845 and they had 3 daughters by the 1851 census when they were living in Fleet Street, St Bride.  Sarah died later in 1851 and by the 1861 census the 3 daughters are living in Cheltenham with their maternal grandfather David PRIMER and are entered with the surname PRIMER.  My question is "What happened to George WINGRAVE?

Wiltshire / Mary Louisa Kate JONES - born Chippenham 1864
« on: Thursday 26 January 23 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
When this birth was registered the Registration District is given as "OF CHIPPENHAM" on the GRO Index - what does the "OF" mean?
Mary Louisa Kate was the daughter of David JONES and Sarah ELLY who were married in Bath in 1860 and appear on the Chippenham Census of 1861.  By 1971 they were living in Gloucester but had two children born in Bristol in 1865 and 1867.  I can find no trace of Mary Louisa Kate after her birth.  There is a death of a young Mary JONES in "OF CHIPPENHAM" registered in the Dec qrt 1865 but the birth of a Sarah Maria JONES was registered in Bristol (mmn ELLY)in the Sept qrt 1865 makes this seems unlikely. Can anyone help? Thank you.

In Jan 1851 a Susan ACKERMAN married an Abraham WOODS in Stepney. She gives her father's name as George ACKERMAN, a Gentleman.  On the 1851 census her birth place is given as Kew and I have found a christening at St Mary Magdalen, Richmond of a Susan ACRAMAN, born Kew, d/o George & Eliza with George described as a Servant.  I can't find a marriage of George & Eliza - can anyone help?

The Common Room / Died on a Ship
« on: Wednesday 07 July 21 13:53 BST (UK)  »
The Weston-super-Mare Gazette of 16th Aug 1862 carries this announcement:  DEATH - On 16th June 1862  at Godone on the West Coast of Africa on board the ship Glenelg, aged 16, Frederick WILLIAMS, eldest son of Mr. Henry WILLIAMS of this town.
I know that Frederick was born in Bridgwater, but what was he doing on the Glenelg?  Was he crew or passenger?  How do I find out more about his death?  Many thanks - Hope this is the right place to post this query!
