Ann Binnersley's occupation on the 1911 - "Goes out working" - the mind boggles!

The Common Room / The 1939 - Column 5? Completed thanks
« on: Tuesday 17 August 21 15:14 BST (UK)  »
S'pose I should know this but I don't. Can somebody explain the meaning of O, V, S, P or I in the 5th column of the 1939 returns means, please?

I don't think the column is generally completed but I have somebody in a sanitorium and the majority are "P" - who I assume are patients  - and those who I assume are staff seem to be "N" (??!!), "S", "O", or "V". There are numumerous, so called, "Mental Defectives" in the next property, a mental home marked "I" so I assume that mens "Imbicile".

United States of America / Michigan Marriage Record Puzzle
« on: Saturday 17 July 21 10:48 BST (UK)  »
I have two marriage transcripts for, ostensibly, the same people. One indicates that they were married on 23 Sep 1947 and the other on 5 Jan 1950

The only thing which seems to differ is the reference numbers. Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is that Elsie Smith was probably still married to Harold Smith in 1947, had to divorce him back in the Uk and then re-marry in the US - likely? She had taken herself off to the US for 3 months at the end of July 1947 and perhaps she had a whirlwind romance whilst she was there!

It fits in with Harold re-marrying, himself, in May 1950 - to the widow of my bigamous grandfather; oh what a tangled web we weave!

Canada / Deportation - Henry Roberts
« on: Wednesday 07 July 21 20:41 BST (UK)  »
It appears that Henry Roberts arrived in Quebec abord the "Corsican" on 15 October 1910. The manifest appears to say that he was "To be deported". It looks as though he was heading for "Winnipeg", he was an "Alien" and that he was a "Stableman".

He next turns up back in Birkenhead on the 1911, living with the Skinner family at 77 Beckwith Street  where he claims to be a "Cabman" - the occupations tie in with the family business which was running a Birkenhead cab company.

Later in 1911, he pops up again with his sister's family - Herbert and Maud Derrett at 782 Beverley Street, Winnipeg, claiming to have arrived in 1910 and to be a "bricklayer".

Is there any way of confirming whether he was actually deported? He seems to have been on both sides of the Atlantic between October 1910 and June 1911.

Any other thoughts?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date only Please

Is this my grandfather or my father? Was it taken circa 1905 or 1930?

The photo appears to have been laminated onto a convex ferrous base - a bit like a "tintype" but not; if you see what I mean.

Thanks for looking

Cheshire / St Thomas, Norbury - Website
« on: Monday 01 February 21 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
If, like me, you've found the St Thomas (Hazel Grove) on-line burial records invaluable; my family has used their graveyard since the beginning, tough!

It looks like they have a shiny new website and it doesn't include the burial records - what a pity. The old website looks to have closed today.

I suppose we can only hope!

Surely this isn't beyond rootschatters!

This poster more than likely came from Sumatra or Malaya in the second half of the 1940s. (I've no idea whether I've scanned it the right way round.) I suspect that it's some sort of anti-British troop propaganda.

Cousin Herbert emigrated to "Iowa" the US in 1913 from 29 Sibson Road, Sale; but to where, exactly? (extreme right of the snippet).

I don't think seeing any more of the page would help but if you disagree, plase shout up. I'll freely admit that I had to look up exactly where Iowa was! (ignore the "wife" reference below  - she belongs to the next person on the list.)

Thanks for looking.
