London and Middlesex / Mount Street, Newington/Walworth
« on: Friday 24 February 12 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know exactly where Mount Street was in the Newington/Walworth area of Southwark.  I know it was near to the Walworth Road but that's as much as I know.  I have a book showing the entire street maps of London in 1939 but the street has obviously gone by that time as it is not listed.  I have census records from 1881 showing family members living there.

London and Middlesex / Carlish's American Tailors, Fleet Street
« on: Tuesday 11 October 11 17:27 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather was a tailor before the first world war and I have a wonderful photograph of he and his colleagues standing outside their shop, Carlish's American Tailors, in Red Lion Court, Fleet Street in 1912.  I know it's 1912 because there's a large sign in the shop window proclaiming "Blues and Greys for season 1912"!

However what I would like to know is more information regarding Carlish's American Tailors.  I have tried to find information on the internet but to date I've had no luck.  Does anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find anything out?

Regards

I have a photo of my great grandfather taken around 1908-1914 showing him and his colleagues standing in front of their shop, Carlish's American Tailors in Red Lion Square, Fleet Street.  Does anyone know anything about this shop or if there are any websites detailing Victorian/Georgian london tailors shops.

Does anyone know if there are any old photos available anywhere of the Michael Faraday School in Walworth.  My gran went there in the 1920s but I've not been able to find any on the web.

Cheers

London and Middlesex / Royal Arsenal Woolwich During WW2
« on: Thursday 09 September 10 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Here's a long shot!

My gran was working as a clerk for the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich at the outbreak of WW2 but having had enough of the constant bombings of the Blitz she was one of many Royal Arsenal workers who took the chance to move to the military depot at Donnington in Shropshire around 1941ish.  Whole streets were built in Donnington to house these workers from London and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get any info about this wholesale movement of the Londoners and if there are any records of the Royal Arsenal workers around 1940/41 that could shed some light on when she moved.

Although she would talk briefly about the Blitz I never questioned her thoroughly about her experiences and the move from London to Shropshire and sadly she's no longer here to ask.

London and Middlesex / S. Marks Church Camberwell and Coward Street 1926
« on: Friday 30 July 10 00:35 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of a marriage certificate from 1926.  The certificate says that the marriage was solemnized at S. Marks Church in Camberwell and both bride and groom were living in Coward Street but I cannot find any trace whatsoever of either the church or the street ever existing!!

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Does anyone know how the names of merchant sailors who were at sea at the time of the 1881 census were recorded?  :)

London and Middlesex / Grantham House, Peckham VE Day Party
« on: Wednesday 17 March 10 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
Attached is a photo of a VE Day party in 1945 at Grantham House, Peckham, South London which includes my partner's mother in the photo.

There must be people out there who remember this party and who were in the picture.  :)

London and Middlesex / London Blitz
« on: Sunday 07 March 10 19:46 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know any links/websites dealing specifically with the London Blitz during WW2.  My family endured it in Walworth and my partner's family were in Peckham and I'm trying to identify which streets were hit.
