Scotland / Birth Register of FIVE daughters in 1853, TOPIC COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 01 May 21 11:52 BST (UK)  »
My GG Grandfather Henry Robinson was born in England but lived in Edinburgh, and was a successful Bookseller. He married a Scottish lady and had 10 children.

I have record of birth of the first two, and found the birth register in 1853 for the next five (with the five separate dates) as one entry.  Why would this happen?

This picture is possibly of my Great Grandfather, John Morrison 1835 -1921, probably taken near Nairn or Inverness.
I would welcome a date to help me confirm.

If anyone can improve the picture in monochrome, I would be delighted.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Advice for Registrars
« on: Sunday 07 February 21 14:50 GMT (UK)  »
I have spent many hours deciphering birth, marriage and death certificates

At my son's wedding, I was pleased to see that the Registrar's pen case had the following motto:

I will write more neatly, I will write more neatly. . .

Armed Forces / Mentioned in Dispatches - but why?
« on: Monday 11 November 19 17:37 GMT (UK)  »
My late father served in WW2 and one of his medals has a metal Oak Leaf, signifying Mentioned in Dispatches, but I never found out why this was awarded.

As a child, I recall him saying that he set off the biggest explosion in the war prior to the nuclear bomb when he destroyed the captured armaments from El Alamein.  But my sister said that he had told her he had been the first officer into Tobruk (but Tobruk was captured and lost a few times.)

I obtained a copy of his military file, and there is nothing there.  In fact there is very little real information at all!

I searched the London Gazette on-line, but could not find him.  I searched with different spellings and with his service number but found nothing.

I wonder if MIDs were ever awarded to units or just to individuals?  I would welcome any suggestions.

He served in the RAOC and spent 4.5 years in the Middle East/ North Africa, and rose to the rank of Major (and for 4 weeks was Acting Lt Col when his boss was in hospital!).  His number is 140200, Maj I H Morrison

Ross & Cromarty / John Mor(r)ison - (Urquhart and Logie Wester) and family Chislom
« on: Thursday 22 November 18 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
I need to find my ggg grandfather John Morrison.

I have a Gaelic Bible belonging to his son Hector Morrison.  In it Hector lists his children's christenings on the flyleaf.  Hector Morrison was born in Newtown of Ferintosh, and his birth entry for 20 Feb 1811 reads -
"Morrison:  Hector Urquhart son of John Morrison and of his wife Isobel Gollan in Newtown"
I think that the Urquhart is a mistake by the minister.  HM did not write a middle name in his Bible, the next baby baptised had the surname Urquhart, and the parish is called Urquhart"

I have found two candidates for John Morrison or Morison in the parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester
  • 09/07/1774 John Morison, son of Norman Morison and Christian Chislom
  • 14/07/1771 John Morrison, son of Duncan Morrison and Catherine Chislom
It may be a red herring, but the next name on the baptism roll is
- Roderick McLeod, son of John McLeod and Catherine Chislom

I have been in touch with someone whose late father-in-law thought it was the 1774 John Morrison, but I would welcome ideas on how to proceed.

Perhaps someone has researched the Chislom (Chisholm?) family?

Subsequently some of the family moved to Inverness and then Nairn.

I would be very grateful for suggestions.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / My kilted Grandfather Neil MacLean
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found a copy of this photo of my Grandfather Neil MacLean taken in 1912 when he was 30.  The Clan MacLean were celebrating the renovation of Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull in Scotland.  My grandfather died in 1927, way before my time.  Is there any chance of
- making the background lighter so that we can see Grandfather, and
- adding a little colour.  For guidance the jacket will be black and the kilt will be a Hunting MacLean tartan, green with black and white checks.

This photo could do with some TLC, and it would be much appreciated.  The baby is now quite old!
