Berkshire / Clara Jane Cleal
« on: Tuesday 16 June 15 17:44 BST (UK)  »
We are currently dealing with interring my parents ashes with my late sister who is buried in All Saints Cemetery, Maidenhead.
While I was in touch with 'outdoor Facilities' I discovered that there is a Clara Jane Cleal buried there as well as my sister, great grand parents and great great grandparents, however I have no idea if Clara Jane is a relation and I am trying to discover if she is or not.

Clara died in 1945, I looked at her Will which says she was a widow (but not who to !) She lived at 53 Park Street, Maidenhead. She left her estate between her two nieces (not equally) One was Ethel Freda Toms (b.1898) who lived in  Hanson Gardens, Southall, Middlesex and the other was Violet Ida Turnbar or Tumbar (?) . The executer was Ethel's husband John Henry Toms (b 1896 )

BTW her estate was £631 1s 7d which wasn't bad for 1945 I guess.

I thought if I could find John & Ethels marriage I may have been able to work backward to find a maiden name for Clara and then find a marriage, but no luck so far...

Can anyone help or offer suggestions please

TIA

Hi, Here I am again looking for technical advice :-[

As XP is discontinued and my PC was about to qualify for its old age pension I bought a new computer which has Windows 8.1 installed and uses Office 2007. The browser is IE 11 (just in case that makes a difference).

My old files  were transferred over, but as I haven't looked at Family History much of late its a couple of years since I did a Legacy back up and they are all zip files which no longer seems to be the file format used.....

I also have an Ancestry tree ( but notes etc. are in Legacy)

Firstly, is there a way to transfer the old Legacy data to the new Legacy import and if not how do I go about exporting from Ancestry ?

Thank you in advance for any help

The Common Room / Family Lost on the 1911
« on: Tuesday 03 April 12 10:53 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the family of Minnie (nee Harman, born Denham ) and Edward William Cleal (born Taplow)
On the 2011 I can locate both parents, Minnie at Belmont House, Belmont Road, Maidenhead and Edward at The Welcome, Sipsom(?), Yiewsley. In addition I can locate William A working as a Grocers Apprentice in East Street Maidenhead with his Aunt, Alice King.
However this leaves:
Edward b.1898
Charles b.1900
Albert b.1901
Dorothy b.1903
Ivy b.1906

Another child, Minnie Rose had died in 1902

Aged between 5 - 13 I'd have expected to find them together somewhere.......any thoughts or help gratefully accepted ......

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Re establishing Legacy
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
A few weeks ago I had some PC problems that resulted in my PC going away, having a major clean, a new processor and a new screen.
The chap who did the work 'helpfully' re arranged my files. He suggested keeping as little as possible on the desktop, so now I have to go through a longer process to find the files.
I started loking at FH today, but could not find the Legacy program itself, even after a Search, however I did find the back up zip files.

I went to Legacy and downloaded 7.4, thinking that would open them, however when I try to import I can't even navigate to them, I just get stuck on Data.

Obviously I've gone wrong somewhere........
I do have a duplicate tree on Ancestry, but not the notes I had in Legacy - can anyone help please ?

Buckinghamshire / Edward HARMON Denham Births
« on: Sunday 22 March 09 15:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have a query regarding Edward Harmon/Harman in so far as I would like to prove or disprove whether the IGI is correct.
On the page with his family is Edward Harmon  given as being born in Alcester (1797), he marries Rebecca Hutchins in 1818 in Watford, however there are other Edward Harman/Harmon's who were born closer and seem just as likely (one in Kings Langley for example)

I had thought that maybe the death cert would give a clue, (age?) but my guess is that Edward and Rebeca had more than one child (who may have reported the death) but I can find no births for Denham in Hugh Wallis, only marriages - is there a way to find the births ?

Is there a way to discover how or why the submitter decided on one particular person being 'the' one ?

Thanks in advance for any help

The Common Room / Stuck with Smiths
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 19:08 GMT (UK)  »
I have William Smith age 44 on the 1881 census, living  at 33 Watlington Street Reading, birthplace given as B’ham Warwickshire,  with wife Harriet (nee Elton of Newton Toney) and children George 11, Thomas 9, Ellen 7 and Frederick 1

Because I have been unable to trace a marriage between William and Harriet, I am stuck in going further back with William.
I have looked at the BMD for the area and found 8 William Smiths born in the right year… any tips for deciding which is the right one, or am I well and truly stuck? ???

Any help gratefully received

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Two trees on Ancestry ?
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
After various frights this weekend (where I thought I had lost my data) I thought it may be a good idea to import all my Legacy data into Ancestry, so I made a Gedcom file in preparation, however I already have an Ancestry tree which I would rather not lose as all the hints and records are attached.

Can I either add the data to my existing tree or start a new one so I have two trees ?

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Legacy Help again
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 19:19 GMT (UK)  »
I cant believe this, but.... I have just had a new hard drive and upgraded processor  the data has been copied from the old hard drive onto the new one, but I have lost the actual Legacy program . :(
I can see the Legacy icon filed with all the data, but when I try to open it I get a message

'Runtime Error 339
Component VSOCXnot correctly registered or a file is missing or invalid'

How can I get back to just being able to click on the Legacy icon and all my info coming up ?

Have I got to re install Legacy and if so how do I then get my isaved data back into Legacy ? ( I should remember this, someone helped with it before but I'm kind of bandjaxed finding my way rould this new system...... :-[

Any help much appreciated

Other Countries / India - Sumner - what next ?
« on: Friday 23 January 09 14:58 GMT (UK)  »
I posted about this line some time ago, nothing much has changed. I have Elizabeth Sumner married to George Robinson. 4th June 1843 at St Leonards Forte in London
Elizabeth was born in or around 1821 and on census is listed as born in Calcutta British Subject. Her father was TW Sumner, Merchant and the given address was York Street, London

Looking at Fibis I have found bonds for TW Sumner and on the shipping lists there is a record of a Mr TW Sumner, Mrs Sumner, Isabella Anne Sumner, James William Sumner and Elizabeth Sumner returning to the UK on the ship the Albion, in 1824.

So far I have ben unable to locate marriages for the other children or anything on the 1841 or 1851 census that would definatley indicate being this family.

If I went to the British library, would it help ? I'd like to find out more about Mrs Sumner if possible (her maiden name) and then what happened to the family afterwards.
It looks as if Thomas William Sumner returned to India, by the date on some of the bonds
