Ireland / James Ryan Dublin/ Tipperary 18xx-? - Dead ends?
« on: Sunday 17 July 22 02:27 BST (UK)  »
HI. I've been exploring my family history online for about 15 years. Like many i have some dead ends where I just cant find enough information to go any further. Yet using DNA links on Ancestry I can see other people with information on shared ancestors that  I have no idea where they get it from.  I message but get little joy. There is an awful lot of people just accepting other peoples findings but no citations or proof. Mistaken assumptions become viral and it makes it very unreliable!!

I am trying to find information on a James Ryan.

- My grandfather was William (Liam)Ryan (1908-1980) born Dublin.
- His father was Thomas Ryan (1859-1938) who was born 9 Upper Exchange St ( several siblings born same area)
- His father was Jacobus (James) Ryan. I have no details other than at Thomas's wedding in 1892 James in listed as Bootmaker. I cant find anything else other than his marriage 1850 in St Nicholas RC Church to Maria Anna McKenna, and baptism of 6 children.

But my grandfather William had some connection to Tipperary but my mother never knew what and appears to have never known anything about that side of the family.

My main question is, given how poor records are before about 1830, how do people go about researching for that time? I am relying on digital records (given my location overseas) and not sure how to get further information. any magic wands or suggestions appreciated!!

World War One / 1916 hospital admission
« on: Tuesday 26 May 20 11:07 BST (UK)  »
I am having trouble understanding some of the information in attached hospital admission for James O'Neill.  I am curious what he was suffering from as it might help me understand a series of documents attached to his record:
- letter from Infantry record office to his wife in Dublin dated 14.06.16 that he was admitted to hospital in Camiers France on 1.6.16 (see attachment)
- letter re 10 day furlong to his parents in Ballymena in August 1916
- copy of Protection certificate for 'soldiers not remaining with the colours' - refers to 28 day furlong and medical condition B2. date not clear
- death certificate Oct 2 1916 for 8 month old daughter (curious why this is in his military record)
- army memo march 1916 - where he seems to have been missing from his battalion and attached himself to another (see attachment )

Originally he was in the 6th Royal Irish regiment but later appears to have been in the Labour Corps. - I think this means he was no longer active infantry and moved to admin type work. Is that correct ?

also if he was in France late 1914-1916 would be likely have had other times when he was allowed leave ?  I'm curious at him having an 8th month old daughter born Feb 1916 ?

help and suggestions appreciated.  many thanks

Ireland / Which subscriptions recommended?
« on: Monday 11 March 19 00:23 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for recommendations on where best to spend my hard money!!!
I’ve been researching on and off for 10 years or so - all based in Ireland.  I have had full Ancestry worldwide membership which honestly gave me little until I did my Ancestry DNA and started to make a few connections. I have retained membership at UK only as it was my cheapest option to keep active membership but I am finding I click to open hints and I just don’t have the right level of membership.   I used to use Rootsireland when it was pay per view and made some breakthroughs there sporadically. Now it’s membership subscription and wondering if it’s worthwhile. It’s not cheap.  The free Irishgenealogy.ie has been awesome as so much of my ancestry in Dublin based but it’s got little else to give me for other areas including Belfast.

I’m finding some interesting connections via Truelines so I have some new leads and questions- wondering my best approach as I can’t afford it all and come and go sporadically when I have time.

Offaly (Kings) / Jordans of Kilbride / Clara around 1811
« on: Wednesday 27 December 17 05:35 GMT (UK)  »
I've traced my ancestry to Thomas Jordan born 23 December 1811 from Kilbride, Kings county.  Date and location from his army records - signed on to 69th Regiment at Athlone in Sept 1829 and served until medical discharge in 1851 , then settled back in Offaly.). I have lots of info from military records but can't locate any other siblings or parents. His occupation at 17 was noted as tailor.  Would love to find more about Jordans in this area.....

I haven't been very active in my research for about 3 years. I was using Family Tree Maker 2010 (I think) on a PC laptop with backup to an external drive.  My Pc laptop died a while back and the laptop I have access to now is a work laptop and I don't have admin rights and cant use the Family Tree Maker disc. So I am assessing my options. Wondering if there is a cloud based program ( that doesn't require a downloadable Exe file )  With software 'as a service' options on the rise for other types of software and cloud based storage I am curious is there is something similar for family history ? something that allows for better mobility of where I can access the information.  ( and more than Ancestry or similar that just show the tree - I liked the flexibility of the Family Tree maker program for reporting etc.)

I note that Family Tree Maker is not longer available for purchase (since 1 Jan 2016) so wondering what its replacement is ?

If I can get this sorted I might be able to get back to some researching again!

kind regards

Barbara

Dublin / William Everard and Mary Conroy Dublin 1830-1900
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 01:15 BST (UK)  »
I would love some help unraveling this part of my ancestry (or better still someone with shared ancestry who has some more information - i live in hope!!!)

William and Mary Everard are my mothers great grandparents. With a name like Everard (less common that some other branches of my tree)  I'm hoping to find some connections - particularly to try and find siblings of William Everard and Mary Conroy. unlikely to find their parents names but who knows!!

this is what I know;
William Everard, son of ? was born in 1830. He was a cabinet maker. He died on 16 Sep 1900 in Lr Ormon Quay, Dublin (from TB). He married Mary Conroy, daughter of ? on 07 Jan 1855 in St Andrews Parish, Dublin.

3.   Mary Conroy.  born ? She died before 1900 but year unknown.

Mary Conroy and William Everard had the following children:

i.   Mary Everard, born in 1855 (St Andrew's Parish) – sponsor John Everard ( uncle?) and Bridget Driscoll ( Neighbours and possible relative?). She married Richard Joseph Tisdall, son of Oliver Tisdall and Jane on 11 Jun 1877 in st Michans, Dublin (Ellen Everard was a witness).  Her addess at time of marriage was 23 Shamrock Street. Both Mary and  Richard were upholsterers. 1901 and 1911 census details located - showing 10 living children in 1911.

ii.   Stephen Everard, was born in 1859 in Sandwich place #1 (St Andrew's Parish).  (sponsors Francis Conroy (uncle?) and Catherine Conroy). Not in 1901or 1911 census

iii.   Francis Everard, son was born in 1867 in Sandwich place #1 (sponsors Timothy and Margaret Driscoll). He didn’t marry. Francis was an upholsterer. 1901 living with sister Ellen. In 1911 he lived at 4 Wigan Road, Whitworth Road, Drumcondra.

iv.   Christopher Laurence Everard, was born in 1869 in Sandwich St #42 (St Andrew's Parish). (sponsors Stephan Everard (uncle)) He married Margaret ? around 1904 and had a daughter Eileen born 1905. Christopher was a cabinet maker. 1901 living with sister Ellen. In 1911 he lived at 4 Wigan Road, Whitworth Road, Drumcondra.

v.     Ellen Everard, was born on 26 Oct 1872 in Dublin,  Ireland. She died in 1944 (Y). She married Thomas Ryan, son of James Ryan and Mary Anne McKenna on 29 Feb 1892 in St Josephs Berkley Road, Dublin. 1901 living Hollybank Road with 4 children and 3 of her siblings. 1911 living Fitzgibbon St with 8 children and sister Christina.

vi.   Christina Everard, was born on 07 Jan 1877 in Sandwich St #60. (Sponsor Bridget Dalton, Richard Tisdall (her sister Marys Husband) She died on 27 Jan 1954 (Y). She never married.

looking at sponsors it looks like William might have had brothers Stephen and John but cant find anything to support this. in 1901 there is 1 Stephen Everard in dublin at right age - grains clerk. there are two possible John Everards - one a painter and the other a retired naval seaman. nothing to clearly connect them - no shared profession. childrens names see fairly common - nothing stands out.

Again looking at sponsors names Mary might have had a brothre Francis Conroy. but again not enough to connect for sure.

any help greatly appreciated.

Dublin / Outcome of petty session appearance for Joseph Jordan 1910
« on: Saturday 02 November 13 00:26 GMT (UK)  »
I came across a petty session record for my ancestor Joseph Jordan. The case was first held 30.12.1909 and was deferred to 13.1.1910. I think that record then refers it to another court in Feb 1910 but cant find any further record to see the outcome of the case!!  (I'm new to court records so not yet familiar with the lay of the land yet!!)

Any suggestions ?

Any previous trouble with the law ?

(My Joseph Jordan was born Clara, Offaly 1.5.1951. He was at 19.1 Marlborough Street in 1901 with his family but in 1911 he lives away from his family at 37 Rutland Street as a lodger. Somewhere along the way he left his Wife and family who are at 6.1 Portland St Rotunda at 1911.

thank you.

Would appreciate if someone could help we decipher the handwriting on the paragraph on the far right of this extract from an Irish petty session record. It relates to my great great grandfather Joseph Jordan. I think it is saying that the case is carried over to a date in Feb. Date of record is 13/1/1910. I cant find details of the outcome of the case.

thanks
