World War Two / Fathers movements
« on: Sunday 07 April 13 18:02 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in my fathers movements during WW2. He didn't like to talk about it and any information I have is vague. He was from Edinburgh and told me that he was at an army reserve camp when war was declared. I have a picture of him in Q battery 34th training regiment of the Royal Artillery in Preston in Oct 1940. I know that he was twice in troup carriers in Scapa Flow that were torpedoed and survived despite not being able to swim. He was also in Greece at some point. Any other information would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Change of name
« on: Friday 11 January 13 20:49 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any idea why a man would change his surname. On a relatives death certificate it gives name of her first husband as Howlett or Durrant. I have her marriage to Edward James Durrant in 1909 and a birth of a son Edward James Howlett in 1913. No sign of either name on 1910 census.
Any suggestions would be most welcome

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Lauder Family Armadale
« on: Friday 11 January 13 14:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Lauder family who lived in Armadale. James Lauder b 1844 married Helen Kennedy b 1854.They had six children James b 1874,John b 1877 Jane b 1879,Marion b 1881 and Helen b 1883 and Janet. Interestingly none of them married so it was the end of the line. I have their birth and deaths but I wondered if anyone can remember them and has any stories to tell. They lived in St Helens Cottage Station Rd. James appeared to run the Station Post Office. Helen and Marion were teachers and Jane a nurse.
They were cousins of my fathers and I can vaguely remember going to visit the sisters when I was wee. I am just curious to find out anything about them.

Inverness / John Kennedy
« on: Tuesday 17 July 12 16:37 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for some help in tracing parents of John Kennedy b Invernesshire about 1778. He married Ann Stewart in 1805 in Edinburgh. And died in 1886 in Edinburgh. I think his parents may have been John Kennedy and Margaret Thomson but others researching same tree have come up with other parents. Any help would be appreciated

Midlothian / Euphemia Farquhar/Reid
« on: Sunday 24 June 12 15:10 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me solve the mystery surrounding birth of Euphemia Farquhar in Dalkeith 1850. She appears to have been adopted by her Aunt and Uncle Walter Farquhar and Euphemia Smith. In 1861 census age 10 she is Euphemia Farquhar b Dalkeith but in 1851 census she is Euphemia Reid niece of Walter and Euphemia Farquharson. I previously thought she was daughter of James Farquar and his wife Ellick Cornell who died in 1850 but this has cast doubts. Where does the name Reid come from? Any help would be most welcome

Occupation Interests / Keepshie Handy
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 17:42 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found a record of an ancestor in 1841 Scottish census on Ancestory. Her occupation has been transcribed as Keepshie Handy. Does anyone have any idea what that was?
Cheers

World War One / Burma WW1
« on: Friday 13 January 12 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me find out more about about a William More Millar b 1898 who was in The 4th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders during WW1 . I believe he was in Burma and survived a Japanese prisoner of war camp. The memories of which were so painful that he would not talk about it. There is plenty written about Burma in WW2 but I can not find anything about WW1. I have looked for war records in Ancestry and Find my past but have come up with nothing.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Cheers

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Death certificates
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 16:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the death of a female relative. I am used to looking at Scottish records which lists deaths under both maiden and married names. Which name would be given in English records. Iam looking for death of a Teresa Nixon b 1866 accrington. She is living with Henry Quigley in 1891 census and also in 1901 Scottish census. I cannot find them in either 1911 censuses. I have found the death of a Teresa Quigley in Blackpool in 1940. Could that be her? I can not find death of Henry or a marriage. They were catholic and she was married before so maybe they never actually married. I would be grateful for any help.
Thanks
