Lancashire / Mining Disasters St Helens
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 07:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for some help researching mining disasters in the St Helens area. My grandfather was trapped in a mining incident circa (1915-1920), but I don't know which colliery. I'm looking for records of incidents that occurred around this timeframe. I have been told that at least one person died in the incident, but unfortunately I don't have any more details.

So, I guess I would need to know where these records are available and the people recorded as survivors/injured/deceased.

Thanks.

Dumfriesshire / Joseph McHolm - Death Record
« on: Tuesday 11 January 11 09:35 GMT (UK)  »
I would be grateful if someone could help me find the death record of Joseph McHolm who was last recorded on the 1871 census living at 16 Bridge Street, Dumfries as an Inn Keeper. I've previously looked on Scotlands People, but I couldn't find it.

His wife in 1871 was Mary Ann McHolm

Roscommon / Request Lookup - James Gill
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 20:32 GMT (UK)  »
I would be grateful if someone could perform a look up on James Gill in Roscommon. Occupation: Gardener. Possibly born approx 1809, but could be later.

Children:
Mary born 1838
Edward born 1860
Michael born 1861

Probably quite a few more, but I lack this information.

Was it typical during this time to father children in your early 50's?

There is a James Gill who died in 1892 aged 83 who was a gardener.

Dumfriesshire / Dalswinton Mill
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for any information about Dalswinton Mill pre 1900. Pictures of the grain mill in the 1800's would be great if there are any available.

I have visited it over recent years, so I have recent pictures, but would like to get any recorded info & pictures in the 1800's.

The grain miller was William Barbour from at least 1851 to 1881. He moved up the road a few hundred yards to Boghall Farm some time before 1891 until 1902.

Dumfriesshire / Grapes Inn, Whitesands 1877
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 19:02 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to know the exact location of the Grapes Inn in 1877. I'm aware of at least a couple of locations for Inn's of this name on Whitesands and I'm trying to establish which location my great grand parents were married. I guess they couldn't afford the church?  :-[

My great grandparents were married at the Grapes Inn, Whitesands, Dumfries on 18th October 1877. The marriage record show's that the father of the bride (Joseph McHolm) was an Inn Keeper, so presumably it was his establishment?

I've looked through business records, but unfortunately they were outside of the window of time I required. I would like to know the proprietors of the Grapes Inn through the 1870's and the address on Whitesands.

Dumfriesshire / Birth & Census Records - Glencairn, Dumfrieshire
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 20:41 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to find the birth record of William Barbour (b. 1823) in the parish of Glencairn, Dumfrieshire. I'm hoping to also find some records of his parents John Barbour and Jane Hastings with an attempt to research further back on this line. I have William's parents names from his death record in 1902.

I have previously searched on Scotland's People, but without any definite success.

World War One / Royal Welsh Fusiliers
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for some help for researching servicemen in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. My grandfathers brother has a war grave with the following information:

60300 Private
E. Gill
Royal Welsh Fusiliers
20th February 1919 Age 23

I have a copy of his death certificate, which states that the cause of death was:
1. Influenza
2. Influenza Pneumonia

I would like to find out records of service. For example where he was posted in the Great War etc.
Thank you.

Roscommon / Roscommon - Emlaghyroyin
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for some local knowledge about Roscommon. My great grandfather emigrated to England circa 1860. He was born in Roscommon and I would like to discover my roots in this area. His father was called James Gill and I have what I believe could be his death certificate, which mentions a place called Emla (his death place). On an English census report it states a birthplace of "Elma Ryan" (which doesn't exist), however I think this may have been incorrectly transcribed and maybe it should have been Emlaghyroyin? James Gill was a gardener apparently.

Emlaghyroyin appears to be a collection of dwellings close to the River Suck. I'm planning on visiting the area in the coming year and would love to hear if anyone has some local knowledge....graveyards, churches (RC), family names (Gill, Cogan) and place to visit for research etc.

Thanks.
