Lancashire / Theodore B Ratcliffe 1795-1824 approx
« on: Tuesday 17 July 12 20:13 BST (UK)  »
Hit a wall tracing with this one tracing my family back and wonder if anyone can suggest anywhere I can look.

Theodore Ratcliffe is named on his daughter, Elizabeth's, marriage certificate as a butcher with a middle name of Belpide. Thought it would be easy to find more info like his birth etc but no joy. Another suggestion for a middle name was Balfour. As far as I can work out, Theodore died in Blackburn in 1824 but again I have no additional info.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Headstone - Carlisle Cemetery - Dent
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 18:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Don't know if anyone can help but I am wanting to know the transcript on the headstone of Joseph John Dent d 1910 and his wife Charlotte d 1928 who are buried in the same plot in the Richardson St cemetery. I am assuming there is an actual headstone. Have tried to trace family tree further back than these two but am struggling a bit with names and dates and thought this headstone may help. I know the plot is there as it is listed on a website for Carlisle but I gather plot number references aren't on the site.

Hope this is ok to ask here. Many thanks in eager anticipation!

Lancashire / Marriage of John Aldridge and Mary Ann c1865 - any ideas???
« on: Sunday 08 April 12 19:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace more info about the above named who were my 2nd gt grandparents. I know John was christened at M'cr cathedral on 18/7/1847 and that he then appears on census of 1851, 61 and 71 before he disappears to some extent. He is named on the marriage certificate of one of his daughters, Annie Aldridge b1873 and married in 1891, but is listed as deceased. I am struggling to find any record of either his marriage or death. Ditto his wife Mary Ann.

In the 1871 census, John was listed as married and the family were living at 22 Miller St in the cellar(???), in the parish of St Michaels, Manchester. At this time, the family consisted of John and Mary and their elder daughter Alice Ann b1867 but who died after the census collection date in 1871.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help with any ideas as to where I can look to get more info.

Thanks!

Durham / Elizabeth Dent (previously Strong, nee Bell) b 1826 Durham
« on: Sunday 08 April 12 19:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

It has been a long time since I've been on here so hope I'll be forgiven for only coming on when I need help!

Tracing the family back, I've hit a major problem with the above named lady who is my 3rd gt-grandmother. From her son's birth certificate, registered 18/10/1852, I have discovered she was born as Bell, must have then married and was known as Strong, before finally marrying my 3rd gt-gfr John Dent. I have tried to trace both of her marriages but have drawn complete blanks. I can't even find either Elizabeth or her husband on the 1851 census for Gateshead but know they were living at Brunswick Terrace in 1852. I have also drawn blanks on their deaths too. John Dent was described as a land agent.

If anyone can be of any help and point me in some direction, I would be most grateful.

Thanks

My gt grandfather John William Walsh, son of John Walsh (1819-1900) was born in Blackburn in 1857. He married an Ellen Greenwood in 1891. She died in Nov 1936 and was a widow by this time but I have not been able to find details of John William's death. Any suggestions???? I can see no reason as to why it wouldn't have been in Blackburn.

Many thanks

Fife / Amelia Kellock m1773 John Keir Fife - help please!
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
I posted on an earlier thread looking for Macfarlane in Alloa in the 1840s and found helpful replies pointing me to scotlandspeople site. From there I have managed to find a Jean Macfarlane b1803 as Givan, what I then believe to be her parents Robert Givan and Janet Keir of Fife and then Janet's parents John Keir and Amelia Kellock who married in Saline, Fife in 1773. I am unable to find Amelia's birth even on a general search. Any suggestions as to how to look further back please?? I think the generations seemed to all be in the Fife/Torryburn/Alloa area.

I did mention on the earlier thread that my grandma had said some distant female relative like gt grandma 3 generations before had come from Odessa on the Black Sea but so far have found no evidence of this (disappointed !!!!)

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Theodore B Ratcliffe - d.1841 Blackburn
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have traced my family back to this gentleman who died in 1841. I have seen a copy of his daughter, Elizabeth's marriage certificate and on that he is listed as being a butcher. At one point he was married to a Priscilla Fisher as she later went to live with the daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Walsh in Blackburn.

I have been unable to trace a date of birth for Theodore (middle name either Belpide or Balfour) or anything else and would have expected to because of a slightly uncommon name. The rest of the family are Walsh and Smith.

Please can anyone point me in the right direction for finding out any more info and would a butcher have been quite a respectable occupation in the early 1820s? I'm assuming so!!

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Macfarlane - Alloa pre-1840s/ Odessa
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing my family tree, partly after my now deceased grandma said that her gt-gt (?) grandma had come from Odessa on the Black Sea. My grandma was not one for making random things up so I have no reason for not believing this may have been the case other than the fact that I can only get back to my gt-gt grandparents in Alloa born in the late 1830s - Robert in 1839 and Margaret in 1840.

Can anyone help me find out about any earlier generations - I believe Robert's father was also Robert and his mother was Jean but again this is only guesswork. I do not have Margaret's maiden name.

During the 1860s/1870s onwards, the family lived at Mar Place and were slaters/plasters. My gt grandfather John Macfarlane was born in approx 1879 and lived there, later becoming an apprentice watch and clockmaker, marrying an Adeline Dent from Carlisle (family did furniture dealing) before going back to Alloa as a qualified watch/clockmaker and working for the Earl or Lord Mar. After WW1, I believe the family had to leave the area because of unpaid bills and/or bankruptcy through lack of work.

Any info from anyone in the Alloa area would be fab.

Many thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / Deadend - help! John & Elizabeth Dent 1852 Gateshead
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 14:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have reached a deadend in tracing my family and have been unable to get any details about the above named other than those taken from their son, Joseph John Dent's birth certificate 18 Oct 1852.

John Dent was listed as being a land agent on the birth certificate and Elizabeth was listed as the mother and had previously been known as Strong and formerly Bell. Her address in Nov 1852 was Brunswick Terrace, Gateshead. I have a feeling they may have both died while Joseph John was young as the only record I can find of him prior to 1871 census when he was in Carlisle was on the 1861 census where he appears to be living with Ann Bell. Although in this case he is listed as a lodger aged 8, I am assuming Ann is his grandmother in view of the mother's maiden name. I have been unable to get any further info or go back to find names/places of earlier generations or any more about John being a land agent and what that would have involved. I do believe that Gateshead had a cholerea epidemic in 1853 and that it wasn't the nicest of places to live at the time!

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

PS My grandma did once say that her gt-gt (?) grandma had come from Odessa but I'm not sure that this is through this line or a Scottish line I have.
