London and Middlesex / George Stephenson Brown - Chemist
« on: Sunday 10 October 21 10:47 BST (UK)  »
George was born in 1897 in Edinburgh, the son of a chemist. He married Gladys Pearson in 1927 in Portsmouth and in the 1939 register he's still there with his wife and two children. He was also a chemist.

Sometime in the late 40 / early 50s, George would be arrested in the greater London area and sent to prison for a crime of dishonesty from his place of work. Some of his relatives today think it may have been from Boots the Chemist, but they cant be sure.

I have searched the UK newspaper archives with no luck in finding any information. Are there other places I can look to find the story?

Ayrshire / Why cant I find these deaths on Scotlands People?
« on: Friday 01 October 21 12:15 BST (UK)  »
Colin Dow, was born in Skye about 1825, although I have 6 census returns and the dates range from 1821 to 1827.

In the 1851 he married Margaret Arthur or Hamilton in Straiton in Ayr She was a widow. She's born somewhere between 1815 & 1818 according to five census returns in Patna in Ayrshire.

The marriage is too early for parents details so i tried to find death certificates on SP. They are both together in the 1891 census in Main Street Straiton and in 1901 Colin has moved in with his son in nearby Coylton.

Someone on Ancestry gives Margarets date of death as 16 May 1899 in Coylton, Ayr. Also on Ancestry Colin's death is recorded as 16 Aug 1903 in Coylton, Ayr.

I have searched for both of these deaths using all sorts of permutations and I cannot find either death on SP. Im abviously doing something wrong. Can anyone assist?

Midlothian / Edinburgh Prison records
« on: Tuesday 28 September 21 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Im researching a family tree and one of the direct line ancestors, a Colin Down Smith, Born in Patna in 1877, draper to trade, has turned up in the 1911 census in Edinburgh Prison. Does anyone know where I may be able to find a record for him imprisoned and for how long? Ive no idea what he did or where he did it.

He disappears from records after this. His wife married again in 1921 and the marriage certificate states she was divorced. His daughter gets married in 1927 and her marriage certificate states he is dead. I cannot find hid death on Scotlands people.

Oxfordshire / Jane Golder - Holywell Women's Prison, Oxford.
« on: Wednesday 22 September 21 20:28 BST (UK)  »
Jane Golder was born in 1863 in Bucknell in Oxfordshire daughter of William Golder and Sarah Ryman.

In the 1881 census she appears as an inmate of Oxford Woman's, Penitentiary Church St, Holywell.

Someone on Ancestry, without providing source information, put that she had died at the penitentiary.

I cannot find her in the 1891 census returns. I dont know what she was in prison for, or if she did die there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Antrim / William Shaw & Agnes Jamieson
« on: Wednesday 05 May 21 13:42 BST (UK)  »
I have very little to go on here. William Shaw died in Glasgow in 1894 aged 42. His death certificate sates his parents were William Shaw and Agnes Ferguson both deceased. He has two census returns in Glasgow. 1881 & 1891. Both say he was born in Ireland.  His marriage certificate in 1878 states his parents were William Shaw & Agnes Jamieson :-X Both parents are alive in 1878. I tend to believe that the marriage certificate will be more accurate than the death one so im going with his mother was Anges Jamieson. But I cannot find marriages for either of those surnames. The family believe that they were from Antrim. Ive tried Ancestry, Irish Genealogy and Family Search, nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Renfrewshire / Cant Find Andrew Glovers death 1901 to 1913 (Complete)
« on: Wednesday 28 April 21 10:21 BST (UK)  »
Andrew Glover, a seaman, was born circa 1838 in Antrim. He married Elizabeth Stewart in Antrim in 1861 and moved to Greenock, where they had seven children from 1862 to 1882. He was still alive at his daughters wedding in 1895 and appears to be in Greenock Hospital in the 1901 census. His wife dies in 1913 and her death certificate states she is a widow.

Ive searched the whole of Scotland from his daughters wedding to his wife's death and can find no trace of his death. There are only two Andrew Glovers in the whole of Scotland that come close to the right birth date and its not them. At 63 in 1901, would he have gone back to sea? All of the census returns from 1871 to 1891 he is not present, I surmise he's at sea.

Any help would be appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Where did they go to?
« on: Monday 15 February 21 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
My wife's great grandmother, Elizabeth Gardiner's death certificate in 1931 states that her parents were Robert Gardner and Elizabeth Freeland and that she was married to Edward Peill. I have three census returns from 1881,1891,1901 that all states she was born in Glasgow around 1843.

I cannot find her birth on SP, but I found what must be her sister, Grace Freeland Gardner born in Glasgow in 1839 to Robert Gardner and Elizabeth Freeland. I also found on SP Robert Gardner & Elizabeth Freeland's marriage in Glasgow in 1837.

Thereafter I cant find any of them in the 1841,1851,1861,1871 census returns in here or England.

Elizabeth Gardner (the daughter) reappears on the systems (ancestry) in 1872, when she marries her husband, Edward Peill in Kendal in Westmoreland aged 29. By 1881, The Elizabeth and her new family are back in Scotland.

Why cant I find Elizabeth, her sister and parents from Grace's birth in 1839 till the marriage in 1872? Ive been unable to find the deaths of the parents and Grace. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive been at this one for quite some time.

« on: Thursday 12 November 20 10:36 GMT (UK)  »
On a birth certificate in 1938, which took place in Scotland, the childs parents (Alexander McDowall & Violet Steele) (all three no longer with us) have their marriage date and location on it. Its 26 February 1936 New York, USA.

I have searched all the online resources I can find and I cannot find this marriage. How do I find out for sure if this marriage took place? Theres a possibility it didn't.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.
