Essex / Lexden - locating a house
« on: Wednesday 19 October 05 01:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

On the 1881 Census Alfred Clarke and family are shown living at 56 Lexden Street, Lexden.

I am trying to identify where this house was and if it is still there.   Unfortunately, Lexden Street is now Lexden Road and I think it has been renumbered at some point.

Any information most appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Essex / Colchester - Can anyone decipher this ??
« on: Saturday 10 September 05 14:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to decipher an old street name from the 1901 Census in Colchester, but I can't come up with anything that matches any street name that I've ever heard of.  Highbridge, Wightbridge ??   I'm stuck!

The street appears on the Census form after Vineyard Street in the parish of St. Botolphs - if that's any help!    I guess it's under a carpark or shopping centre now.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Will of G.H. Errington of Lexden (d 1883)
« on: Monday 18 April 05 13:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find details of a bequest made to my g-g-g-grandfather, Edward Clarke (b Lexden 1808), in the will of G.H. Errington of Lexden Park on his death in 1883.

All I know is that he was left a house, presumably in Lexden village.

If anyone has a copy of, or access to, Mr. Errington's will I would be most grateful if they could enlighten me on which house it was.

Thanks

Tony

Tipperary / KING family of FETHARD, emigrated c1899
« on: Friday 08 April 05 15:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out about my great-grandmother and her parents, who emigrated from Fethard to London/Essex in around 1899.

The family were known by the name of King, but according to my late grandfather this had been anglicised from something sounding like "ray" (I was only a kid at the time and didn't ask how to spell it!). I don't know when - all I know is that they were using the surname of King in 1901 when they appear on the UK Census in Charlton, London.

My great-grandmother, Alice Mary King, was born in Fethard circa 1894. She was the daughter of John King (originally Sean "ray"), b Fethard circa 1870, and Nora King, b circa 1873. Alice  had a brother John, b Fethard circa 1896; a sister Kathleen (later Sister Gabrielle at Poor Clares Convent, Loughton, Essex), b Fethard circa 1898; and Nora who was born in 1900 in Kent, England.

Any information / pointers / advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Suffolk / Turrall family Petistree/Woodbridge
« on: Thursday 07 April 05 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out more about the Turrall family of Petistree/Woodbridge.

My g-g-grandmother was Ellen Turrall (b Petistree 1841, d Lexden 1918) who married Edward Clarke of Lexden, Essex, in 1880.  I believe Ellen was the daughter of Henry Turrall (b circa 1804, d Lexden 1876 [??]) and Ann (b 1799 Peasenhall[??], d 1884 Colchester [??]).   They had at least one other child - Henry Sidney Turrall (b 1839 Petistree).

I understand that Henry Turrall was a publican.  In the Ipswich directory of 1844 he is shown at the Three Tuns Coaching Inn at Petistree.

I would love to know more!!

Thanks

Essex / Lexden photos
« on: Wednesday 30 March 05 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone got any new or old photos of Lexden Village, Colchester, Essex in digital form - or know of any websites containing some ?? I'm trying to visualise the changing nature of the village that my family were from! I'm particularly interested in Church Lane (Heath Road end) where my family lived and owned some properties/land (my great-grandfather sold some of his land on Church Lane to 'Tweeds' garage, perhaps the site of the now closed Murco filling station ??); Nelson Road (where the family firm built some houses) and Straight Road (where they had their business premises - 'Beaumonts'). Any information about the Clarke / Turrall-Clarke and Beaumont families around 1800-1920 much appreciated.

Thanks

Tony
