Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / deciphering occupation
« on: Monday 13 May 19 10:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi, what do others think the occupation of James Smith is? I thought it was 'slater', but other S's on the document don't seem similar.
many thanks

Lancashire / author - Ronald Cunliffe Shaw
« on: Sunday 29 July 18 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if the above authors's book are still in print, and if so, where to buy. In particular I am interested in 'The Moons of Amounderness', and I think he also wrote a history of Kirkham. (Moon is a surname here, it's not a book about lunar activity!

many thanks

Lancashire / marriage by license
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 13:13 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for reasons why a couple would choose to marry by license. The most obvious one could be they were in a hurry! But if no offspring emerged prematurely, what else could they be hurrying for? Is it likely that one or the other of the couple anticipated family objections, and if banns were read on 3 occasions I guess such objections might become known or even acted upon. The couple in question married in Lancashire. As far as I know the bride was over 21, don't know about the groom.
If either was requiring parental consent then I think the license would be refused anyway?
Any thoughts on this please.

Lancashire / removal orders
« on: Thursday 01 June 17 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can answer this; if a family had a removal order placed on them, would they be transported to the nearest place in the relevant parish where they had a claim for support, or would they be taken to the place in the next parish that was relevant in a more personal way. i.e. the man was born there/his father was born there/ or he had worked there for more than 365 days?
The parish they were removed from was Skerton in Lancaster parish, and they apparently had a claim in Bolton le sands parish, and were taken to Nether Kellet. Date was 1770.
Cannot find the man's birth to get more info on his birth/father.
many thanks

Lancashire / finding a will from Kirby Lonsdale - how to
« on: Friday 05 September 14 11:23 BST (UK)  »
The problem I have is that I no longer live in the UK, and so many records are held at places that must be visited personally.

This is a long shot, but does anyone know if there is a site with wills published online? I have checked on the National Archives, but this particular will does not seem to be part of the very small % available online.

The details are: Edmond Guy, a taylor of Leck, died 1758 and left a will that was registered or probated in Kirkby Lonsdale. He was buried at St John's, Tunstall, and his wife was Elizabeth.

Any ideas how I could get further info please?

Scotland / The Scotsman newspaper - archives
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 13:34 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone know if there are archives of the Scotsman available to view online? I am interested in the publication for December 31 1828 because there was an obituary in it for my ancestor William Smith.

Many thanks for any info.

Can anyone help with this please.

I believe the reference for this source is 7 352 CLE/REG/1 Freemens Committe Book 1756 - 1939.
This should contain records of a persons indentured to a trade and their right to be freemen.

I am looking for a record for Peter Guy, b1779. He would have started an apprenticeship aged about 14, so about 1793. He was a bricklayer and in later census he is described as a bricklayer journeyman, implying he had been apprenticed. 2 of his sons are on record in 1832 as being freemen through servitude as bricklayers.

I understand there is also an Apprentice enrolment book for 1707-1881 but I don't know if this is held at the library. I know LDS have it on film but I don't have a film viewer.

Many thanks if this can be done.
