Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Doyle baptism 1888 - South Africa
« on: Tuesday 01 August 23 13:59 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone decipher the first name of the Doyle witness in baptism #133, please ?

I've searched some of the other pages in the records, but cannot find a similar outline for the first letter of the name. The father of the child was my Irish g/gf Joseph Bernard Doyle [a brickwall in my family tree] and I'm hoping the witness was a relative and therefore a clue for further Doyle research.
The bapt record is on FamilySearch at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9Z5-KQPK?i=552&cc=2155416

I am hoping that someone will translate the Latin above the columns of names on the attached page, please.
Also, in the columns of names, the words after the surname "Graham":
Left hand column lines:
- 11, 12 - I presume that "fid" = "son of"
- 19 "Robertus Graham ???"
Right hand column lines:
- 9 "ffargus Graham ???"
- 10 "Johanes Graham ???"

Does anyone know where these have been moved to ?
They used to be at databases.tanap.net - but apparently the tanap.net domain has expired.
I had a look on the Netherlands Archives website under VOC, but I can't find them there.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering 1660 probate, Cornwall, UK

I don't need a full transcription of Henry Nance's will, but would appreciate some help in deciphering a few words, and, in particular, what he left to his wife Luce.
The first 10 lines are the usual text about bequeathing his soul to God and a decent Christian burial.
From line 11: he bequeaths to his wife Luce "the two beds(?) in my lodging Chamber --- together with ------ ----- --- rings and ------- //[p.2] watch and all other Implements and furniture belonging to the said Chamber".
His son Henry gets £200 when he turns 21, and everything else goes to his "sonne and heire John Nance ----(?)"
"... I make and ordaine my whole and sole Executors ... my dearly beloved wife, my beloved friend(?) John Collins of Illogan Estate and my beloved Cozen Theophilize Langhorne gent ..."
And, in the probate, am I right that the above three were appointed Administrators until his son John comes of age ?

Does anyone know what "I.S." stands for under Abode ? and "O S P." under Parish ?
They appear quite often in the 1920 records for St Pancras Workhouse in Camden.

London and Middlesex / Robert Gwillim/Gilham 1846-1921 Islington
« on: Thursday 21 October 21 20:43 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to discover who Robert's parents were.
He married Louisa Buckland (c1869-1895) in 1868 in Islington.
They had 10 children between 1869 and 1888 - Mary Ann (Maria), Sarah Louisa, Matilda Caroline, Joseph Thomas, Robert Edward, John William, William, Esther, Jane Elizabeth, Louisa.
It is the eldest son Joseph Thomas's branch that I am researching.

Their surname is GWILLIM in the 1871 census, and GILHAM in 1881 and 1891 - and their children's surnames are also either Gwillim or Gilham in other records.
Wife Louisa's birthplace varies in the census - 1871 Jersey, 1881 Westminster, 1891 Islington. And, in 1881, Louisa and their eldest dau Mary Ann seem to have been conflated.
In 1881, there is also a mother in the household - Louisa Gilham, 61, widow, b.Westminster - although my guess is that she was actually the mother-in-law (i.e. Louisa Buckland). But, whatever her surname, I cannot find any other record for her.

I had previously thought that Robert was Robert Matthew Gilham, son of Charles Gilham and Elizabeth Edwards.
Robert Matthew was also born in 1846 (bapt 1858) - but he married (1) Hanna Maria Makin in 1870, and (2) Mary Brandon in 1885. He had nine children with his first wife - none of them named Joseph Thomas.

Any help is breaking through the Robert Gwillim/Gilham brickwall would be much appreciated.
