My father served with the RN/ RAN during WW  2.
On his PO uniform jacket was a thin row of campaign ribbons on a board or stiffened material..
On one of the ribbons was a "Rosette",and I had always been told that it related to my father being mentioned in despatches or similar for his meritorious actions  during the raid on Persian/German interests at Bada Shapur in c 1941/42.
Can one of the experts tell me what the "Rosette" signified ?Was it for some kind of commendation for doing something outstanding during that action ?
I appreciate your time very much !
Thank you !

Armed Forces / Chelsea Pensioner Fricker;George 1814
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
My Gt.Gt.Gt.Grandfather,George Fricker was discharged from the 2nd Battalion, Royal Veterans at Plymouth in September 1814,the consequence of being unfit ,due to a diseased left foot, possibly through a wound at Busaco,Central Portugal during the Peninsula wars when he served with the 2nd Battalion,5th Regiment of Foot.
He is recorded as being a "Chelsea Pensioner" after that, though he moved at some point to St.Marys,Scilly Isles,Cornwall, even though he was a Wiltshire boy.
The point of my post is to ascertain the period he might have been in the Hospital at Chelsea and I am also trying to determine what the nature of the injuries he was being treated for on his left foot were..
Is there a register or similar that details the origin of the injuries that the hospital treated , and his length of stay ?
He was only 32 years old at discharge from the Army so I would not have expected him to be a long term resident Chelsea Pensioner.
I thought "Chelsea Pensioners" just related to the safe housing in one place,of the military veterens of various wars, but now I am less than sure of the total services that organisation provided in those times.
I need some educating !
I appreciate your time very much !
Thank you !

World War Two / Reid,Ian POW Burma Death Railway WW 2
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
Ian Reid was my Gt.Gt.uncle.
I am told he was a prisoner of the Japanese at the Burma Death Railway, but that he survived and wrote a book about his experiences.
His mother was Ethel Reid ( Fricker) and his father was Matt Reid,a Bank Manager of the then State Savings Bank of Victoria in Australia.
I cannot find any reference to this book anywhere and I also want to understand more fully the conditions my Gt.Gt.uncle and others suffered at that place.
I am looking for guidance and leads.
Thank you for your time !

Armed Forces / The Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 and Busaco clasp
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
My  Gt.Gt.Gt.Grandfather,George Fricker earned the MGSM and Busaco clasp.
I intend honouring his Army service and purchasing a number of items for display in my house..
1. The MGSM 1793-1814.
2. The Busaco clasp.
3.The plaque for the 2nd Battalion 5th of Foot or its present day successor. He served with the 5th Foot 1805-1812.
4.The plaque for the Royal Veterans that he served with 1812-1814,or its successor,if any.
5. Is there a Chelsea Pensioners plaque ? He was one.
I also want to frame a print of the Busaco battle scene and also,a drawing of the battleplan.

I have a number of questions-
a/ What price could/should I expect to pay for a genuine  MGSM and the Busaco clasp  in good condition ?
b/ Where do I find such an item ?
c/ Where do I find plaques for the Units I have mentioned ?
d/ Does anyone know where I can find well illustrated depictions of the Busaco battle, featuring more musketeers and less riflemen ?
e/ Does anyone know where I can find a well drawn battle plan for the Busaco battle  ?
f/If there is a Chelsea Pensioners plaque,where do I obtain one ?
Any assistance is much appreciated !
Thank you !

Armed Forces / Burma Star with Pacific clasp or vice versa
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 17:47 GMT (UK)  »
Amongst the 2nd World War medals my late father earned was the Pacific Star with the Burma clasp.Apparently you cannot wear both stars.
The point of my post is that after much reading,I believe that the Burma campaign came first, followed by the Pacific campaign, so shouldn't my father have been issued with the Burma Star and the Pacific clasp ,not the other way round ?
I appreciate the assistance of any member with this question.
Thank you !

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / S.S.Suevic arrived at Albany,W.Australia 1905
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 03:42 GMT (UK)  »
My Grandfather,Thomas Horatio ( Horatio Thomas) Milward came to Australia in 1905 aboard the S.S.Suevic.from Britain.
I believe he was supposed to go to Melbourne,or possibly Sydney, but he disembarked at Port Albany in Western Australia and travelled to Perth,Western Australia, where he lived and worked until about 1945,then travelled to Melbourne.,where he died in August 1948.
Could someone please direct me to passenger lists for the Suevic, which I believe arrived at Port Albany on 16th June 1905.
I have a photo of that ship, which had one funnel and four masts, and was built in 1900.twin screw and 14kts speed.
It apparently travelled via Cape Horn. Was there just one class of passage on this ship then - "Cabin class" ?
Any guidance is gratefully received,as is your time.
Thank you !

Australia / The Public Service,Western Australia - T.H.MILWARD
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 02:12 GMT (UK)  »
my Grandfather,Thomas Horatio ,(Horatio Thomas), Milward worked for the following Government institutions from post 1905 to the early/mid 1940s.in Perth,Western Australia.
I am unsure of most dates or tenures.
"Perth Police Magistrate's Court"
"Perth Supreme Court"
"Carnarvon District Court"
"Crown Law Department,Perth"-possibly June 1943.
"State Electoral Office,Perth"
"Registrar of the Legislative Assembly,Perth"
I need some guidance as to the best way for me to find out the dates he served in each of these Government  facilities and if possible, positions held.
I was also told that at one point, all Government public servants had to take a pay cut.Does anyone know the story behind that ?
Any assistance,guidance is very welcome.
Thank you !

Australia / BROCKMAN, Emily Flora, Busselton W.A.
« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 18:11 GMT (UK)  »
On the 11th November 1918,my Gt. uncle, Rev. Sidney Alexander Milward married Emily Flora Brockman at Busselton,Western Australia.
They lived from about 1931 at Nedlands.
Rev. Milward was Rector of St.Marys Church of England ,Busselton from about 1916-1924 I think.
Some names that are related to that family are " Mrs Dorothy Brockman", "Isobel"," Maggie", ( all deceased)
Some addresses are "Sandilands", " Tyrrel Street"," Beachgrove".
I am trying to understand the lifestyle of the  Milward/Brockman family in the time up to Rev. S.A. Milward's death on 4th November 1949 in Perth.
Emily Flora Milward, (Brockman), died 13th July 1944
I am interested in what the life of a Rector's wife  would have been like in those days,, and any other information that might help me know better my Gt uncle and Gt aunt.
I appreciate your time very much !
Thank you !
