Essex / Where did all the Hammonds go in 1841?
« on: Tuesday 29 June 21 18:08 BST (UK)  »
I have four Hammonds in Manuden that are all missing at the 1841 census.  These are father and his sons.  They are all Ag Labs and the wives and children can all be found in 1841 but not the men.  Does anyone have any idea where they may have been?  I am thinking they must have been away working somewhere - but where?

They are:
James Hammond - born 1786
Joseph Hammond - born 1809
David Hammond - born 1814
James Hammond - born 1821

Some sons are shown in Manuden in the 1841 census with their families.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

The Lighter Side / Can you ever stop doing Family History?
« on: Wednesday 28 April 21 14:30 BST (UK)  »
I 'stopped' doing Family History about five years ago because of other commitments and being unable to continue financially.  However, I never got rid of any of my documents or work.  Since then I have re-found two cousins who seem to constantly want me to continue.  They are on different sides of the family but they always seem to contact me at the same time.  Yesterday I received a package from one cousin with lots of interesting family items including letters sent from my grand-father to my grand-mother plus lot of other things.  Now the other cousin is asking me to verify information for her.  I have also received a lot of help from people originally found on RootsChat that was originally in contact years ago.  People keep sending me things and I'm not complaining at all but I wonder when it will stop.  Does it ever stop?

The Stay Safe Board / Rule of Six
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 18:39 BST (UK)  »
If I have understood this correctly:

1.  I work with eight other people in my office but this is OK as work is exempt from the rule of six.  If we wanted to celebrate one of these people's birthdays we couldn't do it at the pub or at someone's house but could we have a party at the office?

2.  I could finish work and play an organised sport with this same group of eight people but we couldn't go to the pub afterwards and have a celebratory drink.

3.  What happens if you have seven people living in one house?

4.  Will there have to be decisions at Christmas regarding who doesn't get invited to Christmas Dinner amongst your family?

5.  How will Christmas parties work?  Will there be a shift system?

6.  Will shops and supermarkets now only allow six people in at once?

The Stay Safe Board / Who remembers social distancing?
« on: Saturday 22 August 20 17:57 BST (UK)  »
Social distancing now seems something from our dim and distant past.  At the beginning of the lockdown everyone was dodging everyone else, waiting patiently while someone walked towards them along a narrow path or walking into the road to keep their distance.  Supermarkets were full of people waiting while someone else was looking at the shelves or fridges.  Queues were very orderly with everyone standing 2m apart.

So, what has happened?  Since the face-mask in shops regulation, social distancing doesn't seem to exist any more.  It was so bad in our local supermarket yesterday that it looked as if everyone was panic buying again.  There was also a queue for the newly-opened restaurant in the supermarket and everyone appeared to be from the same household because nobody was social distancing.

The Stay Safe Board / Does anybody like the new normal?
« on: Friday 10 July 20 20:02 BST (UK)  »
I can't say that I do.

In the old days we would generally go out most days, have a wander around the shops in a local town or market town, have a coffee, maybe lunch.  Have a wander around a supermarket or something.  All of this seems to be so much hassle at the moment, I don't want to be bothered with it.

We are not doing much more than we did during lockdown except we have now had our hair cut.  I'm strangely happy to be around our house and garden but can't wait until things get back to a proper normal - but I'm beginning to doubt it will ever happen.

Does anyone else feel like this?

The Stay Safe Board / Phrases we haven't heard/used for a while
« on: Saturday 02 May 20 08:15 BST (UK)  »
And now for the rest of the news...

Please leave the room if you don't want to hear the football results

That was a sensible comment from Donald Trump

This house is filthy.  Shall we do some housework?

Let's have a day browsing around the shops

Your hair looks nice.  Have you just had it cut?

I've just booked a holiday

I'm sure there are lots more

The Stay Safe Board / When this is over, I can't wait for/to...
« on: Thursday 09 April 20 10:42 BST (UK)  »
Obviously the main one is meeting up with family and friends again but the small things are what makes all the difference.

...to get my hair cut
...to be able to go to shops other than supermarkets
...to have lunch at our favourite restaurant
...to her different news

Anything else?

The Stay Safe Board / Hope for the future
« on: Tuesday 24 March 20 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
Once all of this is over, I am hoping this will be a better world.  I am hoping we will realise how fragile life is and how precious our family are and how vulnerable our parents can be in a crisis.  I am actually very pleased my parents and in-laws are not around now because they all lived a long way from us and it would be a huge problem trying to help them through this.

But there are a lot of smaller things I hope will continue.  I hope the obsession with mobile phones may lessen and people will actually talk to each other face to face.  I hope people can slow down and enjoy the smaller details of life.  For example - sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee rather than gulp it down on the run.  I hope people that started courses continue them or those that took up a new hobby continue to get pleasure from it.  I hope the people that have helped others in their community still feel it is important to do that even when they don't think they have the time.

I'm hoping but I'm not that optimistic at the moment, but it's early days.

This is another try at continuing the party.

Let's hope it works this time.
