I am trying to find the marriage of a relation (now deceased) who we believe spent some time on Jersey.

She was born Margaret Mary Wilson, married and divorced a Mr Galloway (have details) followed by marrying a Mr Holmes (have details). The divorce to Mr Holmes was finalised in June 1979.

The marriage I am looking for is after this to a Mr McArthur (don't know his first name)

Can anyone help?

Stirlingshire / COMPLETED (Thank you) Youth Hostel in Killin 1958-60
« on: Monday 16 September 19 20:12 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone read the name of the Youth Hostel from this 1958 certificate?

Perhaps someone with local knowledge can work it out?

It's a sad story of this birth in 1958 followed by death in 1959 from scolding which I suspect happened at the YH, although the baby died at Glasgow Infirmary.

Stirlingshire / Stirling Maternity Home, 1958
« on: Sunday 15 September 19 19:56 BST (UK)  »
I have just received a birth certificate for July 1958 where the place of birth simply states "Maternity Home, Stirling".

Would this have been Airthrey castle or somewhere else?

Lancashire / Brian Robert Martin after 1946
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 22:20 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to trace Brian Robert Martin after 1946. Born 12 Feb 1917 in Blackburn.

In 1939 he was a policeman in Nelson. He married and then had a son but disappeared in c1946.

Waiting to hear back from LRO about his police records, website shows he served 1937-1946.

I can find a possible death in Preston in 2011 but the registration doesn’t give exact DOB.

Anyone any other ideas where to look?

The Common Room / Marriage/divorce, ny info on Aunty Margaret
« on: Wednesday 14 November 18 22:45 GMT (UK)  »
I'm a little bit stuck and would appreciate help or suggestions. Posting here as not sure where to post multiple queries about the same person.

I'm researching my aunt - Margaret Mary Wilson b 1928 who was estranged for her family for most of her adult life.

I'm trying to find details of her 3rd marriage to a Mr McArthur but have no idea where or when this took place. I'd also love to find anything else that may be available ?divorce records. She was born in Lancashire (have full details) and married twice previously

1. to David Peter Thomas Galloway in Wandsworth Register Office under licence in 1949 (I have the certificate - she was only 20) Interestingly, I think I have found that he married again. She had a son to this marriage who I believe is alive so I will not post details (I have no contact with him).

2. to James Henry Holmes in 1958 in Glasgow (certificate awaited). She had a son to this marriage who died on 31 Dec 1959 aged under 2 years in Glasgow Hospital due to burns (have death cert - family story was this was a scald from boiling water). I have found a corrected entry which suggested there might have been a criminal investigation or at least a coroners inquest - how do I find more info?

Margaret moved and died in Peterborough, we think she may have spent some time in the channel islands at some point.

The 1939 register has the McArthur name and I know she died with this name.

Thanks for any help

The Common Room / Time on birth certificate but not a twin?
« on: Saturday 21 May 16 20:15 BST (UK)  »
After first getting my great great grandfather birth certificate over 12 years ago I have just looked at it again and noticed it gives a time of birth.

I hadn't noticed this before and as far as I am aware he wasn't a twin. I've searched freeBMD to see if I can find a sibling in the same quarter but I can't.

He was born in 1849 - was it normal to put the time on birth certificates even for single births then?

World War One / What was in the letter?
« on: Sunday 20 December 15 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching my great aunts husband and have come across something I have never seen before and wonder if anyone can help me?

I have found his British Army Pension Record but he only served 11 days! On the topo right corner of the short service attestation it appears to say "Cancelled see letter enclosed ex Chief of Police Hull". (Sadly the letter isn't in the record)

I wondered what the letter would have needed to say to cancel his military service?

The man concerned was James Edward Hill born 15 Jan 1891 in Hull to James Edmund and Rosamund (nee Harrison). James senior was a policeman and police pensioner in the 1901 and 1911 census.

James joined up on 9th Nov 1914 and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery until 19 November 1914.

Any help or suggestions where to look gratefully received!

The Common Room / Not on the 1939 register?
« on: Wednesday 04 November 15 16:08 GMT (UK)  »
I can't find my grandparents on the 1939 register and wonder if one page is missing?

i know exactly where they were living as my mother was born earlier in Sept 1939 but I can't find them however I search - they are not "findable" by searching their names or address.

All the odd numbers of the street show when I do an address search but they lived at no 16! Has anyone got any ideas or can anyone find them?

Their details are
Richard Henry Clegg b 1905
Mildred Clegg b1910
Address 16 Leslie Ave, Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire

Thanks
