Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Swedish birth - possible father's name?
« on: Sunday 23 August 20 01:27 BST (UK)  »
Karl Magnus was the illegitimate son of Ingaborg Karlsdotter.  The column for the parents names looks to be very standard at writing the father's name above the mother's name, so I am hoping the name written above Ingaborg's might be the reputed father, but I can't make out what the name might be.  Any suggestions?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cheshire parish entry
« on: Saturday 09 March 19 04:52 GMT (UK)  »
This is only for curiosity, as I ran across this entry while looking for something else.

I'm seeing:
Samuel Jobson drownd in Smallwood
John Morris drownd in Smallwood
goth the (a good OR above) horse & all togather in one pitt.

Is he saying a horse was buried with the drowned men?

Europe / Denmark: need help reading old parish record
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
On the right page, 4th entry down for a birth on Nov 7th:

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/en/billedviser?epid=17123916#164352,69526474

I'm assuming Niels Sorensen is the father, Soren is the son, and Ana the mother?  I have no idea of what the words are that  I have replaced with question marks, and Google translate is failing me!

7th November, Niels Sorensen of Fleming, ? ? ? ?, Soren, ? ? ? ? Ana Nielsdatter of Bjerre Molle.

Any help appreciated in translating!

Europe / Danish parish record: occupation/conditon of father
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 00:54 GMT (UK)  »
This is from a birth record, and unlike other ones I have seen, the word prior to the father's name is what appears to be "Indi".  It appears in the next column as well for one of the (godfathers?).

I am trying to figure out at what point this family ended up in the work/poor house for the rest of their years, and trying to tell if they are in there at this time, as it looks like the child was born in a hospital?  I'm assuming some work/poor houses had a hospital attached?

(Could the Indi be an abbreviation for Inderste?)

Europe / Denmark: need help with some parish (birth) records please!
« on: Wednesday 06 February 19 05:19 GMT (UK)  »
I apologize in advance for the long post, but I am just trying to give all the info I can!

Marius Rasmussen was born 6/6 1869 in Svenborg per the 1901 and 1930 census, where he is definitely the person I am interested in.
For reference:
Marius  1930  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSLH-2SZX-V?i=223&cc=2800932

Marius 1901  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSLC-QSM1-X?i=1318&cc=2800929

In the search for his parents, I believe they are Hans Jorgen Rasmussen and Rasmine Jensen, based on the 1880 census, and his birth/baptism record, but their are some oddities that have come up.  I cannot read Danish, so I am hoping there is some clue on the forms.  I realize I am asking a lot here, but I have worn out Google translate trying to figure this out!

As I cannot post the full images, I will post the links to the images on Family Search, followed by what is confusing me,  in the hopes someone can lend a hand! I may very well be mixing up Marius with another one.

For reference, the 1880 census for Hans Jorgen Rasmussen, with wife and Marius/siblings is here:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS21-T3TX-Y?i=582&cc=2778657
The Hans in question is person 59  (as there are two on the page).

The birth/baptism record for Marius states his birthday as 06 July, instead of 06 June, BUT his baptism date is in June, and his mother's age is given as 29 (she should be 19).  So is this just clerical error?  Or totally wrong parents?  If I read it right, the parents are not married.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89ZX-96LV?i=299&cc=2078555

I next looked up other children in the family, and although the mother's age is slightly wrong, it is very close to what it should be.  I am hoping that there is some hint as to why the parents did not marry until after they had a few children.

Rasmine Johan Rasmussen born 20 Aug 1871,parents unmarried, mother 22
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9ZX-9638?i=306

Anne Dorothea Rasmussen  born 01 Apr 1873 with twin? Jensine that died?, parents unmarried, mothers age 22, and I am unsure of the word written in front of the father's name.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89ZX-96ZX?i=398

Jens Rasmussen 18 Oct 1875  Mother age 26  Parents appear to be married now.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9ZX-96QT?i=320

Johanne Marie Elisabeth, parents married, mother age 28
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9ZX-9DX6?i=413

Hans Peder Erik  mother age 30
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9ZX-CSGL?i=6

In summary, do I have the right Marius birth/baptism, and is there any hint of why the marriage was delayed?  With the birth of Anne Dorothea: is she a twin, and what is written in front of Hans Jorgen's name?
In the remarks section, is there anything of value?

Canada Lookup Request / Winnipeg obituary 1950 Completed, thank you!
« on: Monday 04 February 19 22:31 GMT (UK)  »
There is a William Darlow buried in the military section of Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg.
I am hoping someone can find an obituary which might confirm if it is the William Darlow I have been hunting for ages.  His birth year and being in the Royal Navy (from his headstone) match, but I am hoping for any clue to nail it down.

The fellow buried at Brookside died 14 Aug 1950, was buried on the 16th, and there is apparently an obituary in the Winnipeg Free Press on 15 Aug 1950.  (I thought the old Google newspaper archives had the Winnipeg Free Press, but apparently not?)

Europe / Denmark: translation of column headings
« on: Thursday 31 January 19 22:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am finding documents for some Danish ancestors from Family Search, but I don't know what the column headings are.  I am hoping someone can lend a hand here!

The images are of the left and right hand side of either a birth or baptism:

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Does Halden = High Halden?
« on: Friday 26 August 11 03:40 BST (UK)  »
Edward Barton, a farmer from a long line of farmers in Bethersden, Kent, married an Elisabeth Foster in 1799.

The marriage location is listed as Halden, Kent.  Would that be the same, or very close to High Halden, where I do know the Barton's went to and fro from, or is there some Halden hidden away that I can't find?

Occupation Interests / Occupation: shell turner/driver?
« on: Sunday 10 July 11 00:02 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to figure out the occupation of a 19 yr old, from his marriage certificate.
The year is 1917, the place is Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland.

He is from England, and living/married in Scotland.

I believe it says "Shell Turner, Driver, R.L.A"

Would this be like ammuniton shells, and therefore RLA is a branch of the Armed Forces, or.... am I missing some other obvious answer?
