Lancashire / John Thomas Whitehead b1864 Oldham
« on: Sunday 22 January 17 14:39 GMT (UK)  »
I picked up two studio photos at the car boot sale today so it would be good to re unite them with their family.

John Thomas Whitehead was born in 1864 in Oldham and became a cotton waste agent. His wife was Mary Anne.
In 1901 he was living at 41 Glen Eldon Road, St Anne's on Sea.
1n 1911 he was at Highlands House, Shaw, near Oldham
If you think he belongs to you, please send me a message and I will forward on the photos to you.

London and Middlesex / St George's Hospital, London
« on: Thursday 19 January 17 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x great grandmother Mary Ann Porter was born in 1819 in Langtoft in Lincolnshire, and died in 1850. She married Christopher Clark (aka William Clark) in 1841 and lived in Stamford, Lincolnshire. She was buried at All Saints, Stamford on 9th August 1850, age 31.
The  burial record on Find My Past says 'From St George's Hospital, London' so guess that her body was brought back to Stamford for burial. I would like to get her death certificate, and have found a possible entry:
Mary Ann Clark Q3 1850 St George in the East, London  Vol2 p49

I am wondering whether there was a St George's Hospital in this area at that time, and hope someone with a bit more local knowledge can tell me.

Canada / Henry Aylmer Coates
« on: Thursday 05 March 15 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
I recently bought an old studio portrait at an antiques fair.  I am keen to pass this on to someone with a connection. The photo is of a small boy Henry Aylmer Coates and was taken at a studio in Lancashire, England.
Having done some preliminary research, this is what I know so far.
Born in Farnworth, Lancashire in 1904.
Emigrated with his parents to Canada in 1908 (Parents are Joshua Frederick Coates and Sarah Larkin)
1911 census shows him in the Kootenay district with parents.
He married on 31st August 1937 to Lillian Vera Fleet in Nelson BC
Lillian died in 1993 in Victoria, but I have not yet found a record for Henry's death. I do not know whether they had any children.
Would anyone like to claim him?

Canada / Batching definition
« on: Tuesday 04 September 12 14:29 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can give me a definition of 'batching' in the context of homesteads. I have read many references to it through different families personal recollections of their homesteading days, and I guess from the contexts where I have read it, that it refers to simple farming and self sufficiency on the land. I wonder whether it means any more than this. It is not a term used here in the UK, so your knowledge on this would be much appreciated, thank you.

Canada / Saxonia or SS Lake Manitoba?
« on: Tuesday 07 February 12 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
Several months ago I traced my Redding family to Saskatchewan who had emigrated from Chesham England in 1903. Through a helpful Rootschatter,  I was provided with a brief  first hand account of their story. It begins 'My dad and mother and family arrived in Saskatoon in April 1903 with the first trainload of Barr Colonists...'  Their party comprised of Nathan Reading, Mrs Reading (Pleasant Reading) and children Ralph, Sarah, Florence and Elsie. They are included in the  passenger list for 'Saxonia' from Liverpool bound for Boston giving  St John, New Brunswick as  their  destination port.
However, I have also found another entry, finding them on the SS Lake Manitoba sailing from Liverpool on 31st March 1903 and arriving at St John, New Brunswick on 12th April.  From the information I have found, this was the ship on which the first group of Barr Colonists arrived prior to being transported on to Saskatoon by train. Can anyone explain why they are listed on two different ships? Does their inclusion on a passenger list confirm that they actually travelled, or could they have been transferred to another ship. I would be interested if anyone can shed some light on this.

Canada / Redding - Saskatchewan and Victoria BC -COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 31 August 11 22:20 BST (UK)  »
My great aunt was Pleasant Wells born in Chesham Buckinghamshire in 1866. She married Nathan Reading in 1886 and had four children Ralph, Sarah,Florence, and Elsie.
In 1903, they emigrated to Canada. from then on they seem to have adopted the alternative Redding spelling of their surname.
I have traced them through passenger records and have seen their Homestead file. Both Nathan and his son Ralph had separate homesteads, and I have been able to trace them on the 1906, 1911, and 1916 Prairie census.
Apart from some members of the family crossing over into the US on 24th Dec 1916, I know nothing further of this branch of the family except for the deaths recorded in Victoria. Pleasant died on 24 June 1949, and her daughter Elsie Price on 26 Feb 1972, and both are buried in Royal Oak Burial Park, Falaise Drive, Victoria.
I would be grateful for any information about the family, and what happened to them after 1916.
Thanks.
