New Zealand Completed Requests / Western Māori Electoral Roll 1908.

Western Māori Electoral Roll 1908.

Hello.

Five years ago, by pre-booking time slots at a Waikato District library, I was able to access and make note of, 21 enrolled voters in the 1908 roll. I have always intended to arrange for some more, back to back bookings, to check my prepared list, for E. & O E. (see attachment)

But have not yet managed to do so.

If anyone has access, from their home, and time to spare, a check of the attached list would be very much appreciated.

Ideally, I wanted the details of the 53 local Māori, who the press of the day, reported block voted for Mr Henare KAIHAU, in the 1899 election. [Inc., WAIKATO ARGUS 20/12/1899 p3.]

All being TRIBE - Waikato; HAPU - Hukanui.

As the WOODLANDS ESTATE was the largest employer in the area, most males would have had employment opportunities on the Estate, either directly, or by contractor’s to the Estate, but by 1908 the Estate had been surveyed up, and sold off.

Unfortunately extensive enquiries, with recognised National and Tainui archives, have failed to find any evidence of a surviving copy of the 1899 roll.

Should any KAIHAU descent have inherited a copy, that would be a taonga (treasure) of national significance.

Hello again.

It's getting around to the Auckland Heritage Festival time again. Starting next month, and into October.

www.heritagefestival.co.nz

I have just looked up what attractions, and activities, have been registered for this year's event, and have found some 130 listed.

As it appears a group I usually try to get up to support, has not registered an open day, I may be able to dig further into my 180 year old Auckland roots. Bookings appear to be essential for the likes of the Symond Street Cemetery activities, the Pah Homestead, and other "founding fathers" attractions. Even Whatipu Lodge, could be worth a visit. When we tried to visit in March, as we climbed out of little Huia, we discovered the road was closed to all, but residents and the services.  Could not even get up to Mt D McLean, to look back East, across the Manukau harbour, and towards South Auckland.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Auckland Heritage Festival 2022
« on: Monday 05 September 22 03:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello.

AUCKLAND HERITAGE FESTIVAL has announced it's registered events for October 1st to 16th.

http://www.heritagefestival.co.nz/events/default.asp?eventcategory=&eventarea=West&pickdate=&status=search&I1=GO+%3E

An annual event, which had to be cancelled this time last year, due to Covid restrictions.

In a quick review I did not see listings for two groups, that I usually try to support, in South and West Auckland, but there are plenty of other interesting events/activities that can give period insight to those researching their local Auckland heritage.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Auckland branch ARCHIVES NZ - advisory.
« on: Monday 21 February 22 21:16 GMT (UK)  »
Today I find on the NZNA site this advisory re their Auckland branch.

"The Auckland reading room will be closed for 4 weeks from 7th February to 7th March. During this time you won't be able to visit us, send research enquiries or make digitisation requests."

As advised to several threads where I have offered to photograph files, my voluntary service of paying it forward, is on hold.  I plan upon returning at some future date, once they are accepting bookings, and I am happy that I will not, unnecessarily, be exposing myself to COVID risk.

Therefore I am still happy to register an interest, but have no idea when, or if I can fulfill it.

Unfortunately rapid COVID spread through the unvaccinated, and children, in the Waikato, is putting considerable pressure on our primary export producers, and our ability to care for our livestock.

Technical Help / Espacenet inventor search.
« on: Monday 31 January 22 00:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello from down under.

Many moons ago I researched some 200 patents via the Espacenet patent service.  But not today.

These days Espacenet advanced search is so technical with options, that I'm lost.

An Australian and a Kiwi are looking for patents, and or patent applications, where one:-

William Leonard WLKINSON, is named. Date range say 1900 - 1940. And in particular any mention of synchronized firing of aircraft mounted weapons, and other engineered apparatus.

Any tips appreciated.

Original poster "R WILKS" has threads re subject on Au, NZ, & USA boards.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Searching historic Auckland City Council records.

Historic Auckland City Council, property, rating, licences etc and interactive 1908 Map.

Recent activity on the WILKINSON research threads by “R WILKS” has brought to my attention, that I have not been keeping up to date, with additions to the Auckland City Council, and Library, web pages on historic records.

As part of discussion on the thread I went looking directly for the 1908 interactive map, without realizing, that there are now further resources on line linking in to that interactive map.

R WILKS post, and my reply #55 & #56

Argyllshire / Alexander MacKINNON & Isle of Tiree
« on: Monday 22 November 21 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello from Down Under.

The little museum on the Isle of Tiree holds an old photocopy of a seaman’s “Master Local Trade” certificate, issued to Alexander MacKINNON. [1997.145.1] [No Provenance]

The original office duplicate of 110 years ago, is held in the New Zealand National Archives, as is his “Mate’s” certificate issued a few years before.

Records in Australia, suggest this seaman, was probably born in 1869/1870.

NZ Arbitration Court records of 1915 have one Alexander MacKINNON, Mate of the ss Hawera giving evidence.

The Hawera was purpose built for the shallow draft harbour of Patea, to Wellington, trade.

Press reports of coastal shipping intelligence, record Alexander as Mate, and then Captain, serving Patea in the Hawera, and or, on one of her three sister ships, until 1926. Thereafter reports normally just stated,  McKINNON as Master or Captain, continuing until WWII, when the boat was requestioned.

During that last 20 years there were a number of Mac/McKINNON Captains serving along the NZ coast, so it becomes difficult to sort them all out, without knowing anything about this man’s heritage, or if he had other family steaming along the NZ coast.

Lyttleton/Christchurch Electoral Roll 1911 - 1914; and Wellington Central 1914 - 1919.

If those who believe they are related to this seaman make contact, I now have over 130 printed items, giving an insight to the service he played for the South Taranaki community, between WWI and WWII.

When COVID restrictions ease, I hope to have quality photos taken from the certificate duplicates.
