Lanarkshire / Mysteriously missing G Grandparents (1911 Scottish Census)
« on: Friday 17 April 15 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone find the following family on the 1911 Scottish census (index)

I know lots about them and have tried a couple of times to find them at a Scotlands People centre and failed miserably  :'( :'( :'( Dad swears that he had an uncle William (complete with occupation and named cousins) but the only William I can find died in infancy. If Dad is correct then I was hoping to see the missing William on the 1911 census so that I at least knew what year to try and find his birth. Either that or not find him and tell Dad his memory isn't what it used to be ;D

What I know:  Denis O'Neill (born ~1864 Ireland) marries Mary Lamont (born ~1866 Ireland) on 28/11/1890 in Glasgow

83 Port Street, Glasgow (Kelvin Registration District)
- 1891 Census (Denis and Mary with no children as expected)
- birth Sarah 25/08/1891
- birth Dennis 02/12/1892
- death Dennis 14/07/1893
- birth William 14/04/1894
- death William 08/05/1894
31 Dover Street, Glasgow (Kelvin District)
- 1895 Valuation roll (couldn't find them at either Port St or Dover St)
- birth Mary Helen 02/09/1895
13 Pembroke Street, Glasgow (Kelvin District)
- birth Fanny 26/08/1897
- death Fanny 27/08/1898
- birth Margaret 06/06/1899
- birth Thomas 24/02/1901
- 1901 Census (with parents, Sarah, Mary Helen, Margaret and Thomas as expected)
- birth Frances 27/09/1903
- 1905 Valuation roll under father Denis O'Neil
- birth Denis 26/12/1905 (my grandfather :D)
116 Elderslie Street, Glasgow (Anderston Registration District)
- 1915 Valuation roll under Denis O'Neil
- 1920 Valuation roll under Denis O'Neil
- death Denis senior 17/09/1928

They don't seem to move around a lot so I thought finding them on the 1911 census would be easy. I can find individuals that match but as soon as I put in one of the children/spouse to check I might have the correct entry it doesn't match. Technically possible they were in Ireland or England around census time but I didn't find anything there either.

I am hoping that they have simply been mistranscribed as something weird that I can't think of. Help!

Lanarkshire / Lambhill Extension Cemetery
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 16:02 BST (UK)  »
Are any of the kind people on here able to describe which part of the Lambhill/Western Necropolis/St Kentigern's cemetery site is classed as "Lambhill Extention"?

My parents are going to a burial there on Monday and we want to be sure they are in the correct area.

I have got as far as confirming that the access looks to be off Tresta Road but then so is the access to the other areas ???

Many thanks.

Fermanagh / Curry confusion!
« on: Wednesday 13 March 13 00:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have a wedding certificate for John Thomas Curry who married in Glasgow in 1904 and now I am try to trace his birth. His parents are listed as Patrick Curry and Margaret McGuire/Macguire and from his age he was born ~1882.

According to the census he came from Ireland and family 'lore' mentions Garvery in Fermanagh. I think I have him in Glasgow in 1901 and I didn't find him in 1901 in Ireland in Garvery with the rest of the family members that I found on family search (below).

I have searched on family search and there is a couple with the correct names having children whose names match some of John's children so I would say it looks a good match - for the correct family anyway. There is a John born in 1876 which could be 'my' John but family search records stop at 1881 so I can't be sure if there is a 2nd John later.

Then I try ancestry and they have the same births and actually more of them, adding another John born 1868 but still none for 1882 although they say they have data past 1881 so it 'should' be there. That is for Irish Births/Baptisms. If switch to Irish civil records I get multiple John's born 1882 in the registration district but no data to confirm the parents!

I then tried RootsIreland which has transcripts for the records and there I find both a birth and a baptism for a John in 1882 (sponsor another John!!! and Mary Ann which looks to be a sister). Never mind that the civil registration has both a birth and baptism date that are a couple of weeks later than the date on the baptism record ??? ??? Oh and some of the records that family search/ancestry have as Curry are on there as Corry.

I haven't managed to search findmypast because my subscription for that doesn't cover Ireland. Going by the above it might just confuse things further.

In all this I haven't found any record for John Thomas only plain John - although if there are 2 brothers with the same name alive at the same time it makes sense to have/use a middle name.

Are any of the records reliable! They all seem to give "nearly" the same information but not quite so I have no idea which is correct or even if any of it is. Are there 2 couples with the same names? or....

Can anyone help before I go totally doolally  ;D

Lanarkshire / Schooling in the Cleland area in the early 1940's
« on: Sunday 17 February 13 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in knowing about the secondary school in Cleland in ~1940. I believe that the minimum school leaving age was 14 at that time.

Did Cleland secondary have the facilities to allow you to stay on to do 'O' Grades and Highers (or whatever the equivalent was)?

FIL seems to have left school and done courses at Coatbridge technical college towards an ONC and then HNC. We wondered if there was any reason he didn't stay at school to do some of that.

He also became an apprentice at (barely) 16 and finished his HNC at the same time as his apprenticeship  :o

Armed Forces / Is the piper wearing a military uniform?
« on: Monday 19 November 12 22:13 GMT (UK)  »
We know who the piper is and are reasonably sure the photo was taken mid 1958 (the youngest boy was born Aug 1956, and the eldest would be around 5 then).

What we would like to know is if anyone can confirm if the uniform is a military pipe band or a civilian uniform. The piper served in the parachute regiment 1945-1948 but that is all we know for certain.

Many thanks for any comments.

Armed Forces / Unit identification and possible date please
« on: Monday 22 October 12 22:14 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to identify the unit that this gentleman belonged to? I have done some searching and think that I have identified his cap badge as 'Cameronian' but got a bit stuck after that  :)

If he is who we think then he was born December 1893, served in WWI and survived to be married after the war. We don't think he served before the war. If there is anything in the picture to be more precise about the date that would be great.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can anyone date this please
« on: Sunday 24 June 12 00:21 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to give me an idea of the date for this photo please?

The pasteboard surround hasn't come out very well on the full image but is actually a dark green if that makes any difference. I did also manage to find an Alexander Watt & Sons as a photographer in Dundee but couldn't find any dates.

I am reasonably sure who the lady is but the date would help confirm which of her children the baby is (best guess so far is my Gran born 1905, d 1962).

Many thanks.

United States of America / Advice on how to order a Connecticut death cert please
« on: Tuesday 01 November 11 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me the best way to get a Connecticut death certificate.

I know the date and town of death (and name) for the gentleman concerned so I believe I have all the information I need...

The Connecticut state site says that the certificate is available to anyone over 18 (http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3132&q=390664) and that I can order on-line through the Vitalcheck site.

The VitalCheck site says that I have to be a close relative or lawyer or ... (never mind the extra cost and what they charge for shipping to the UK!!!)

I can apparently order from the town office directly but the fee has to be paid as a postal money order (and I suspect that they will only post to the US). As far as I could find the only place I can get a postal money order is in a US post office  :(

Does anyone know how I can get round this problem?

Thanks
