England / GALWAY SMITH MOONEY ADOPTION
« on: Friday 29 December 17 04:41 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for a woman named Daphne who had children in the 1950s, was married in the 1940s in New South Wales, Australia, and may have been born into a family named Galway. Daphne was adopted when she was young. The couple who adopted her were George and Millicent (actually Margaret, nee Mooney of Hillgrove NSW area) Smith. Daphne was my grandmother's adopted sister. I don't know if the adoption was legal or formalised. Any help would be appreciated.

Australia / Margaret Rowley and Henry Andrews
« on: Tuesday 02 February 16 05:48 GMT (UK)  »
Any information about Margaret Rowley and Henry Andrews welcome.
Margaret Rowley married Henry Andrews on 31 May 1851 in St Michael's Church in the Parish of Wollongong, County of Camden, NSW, Australia. MC NSW BDM 399 Vol 37B 1851. Consent: The Governor. Minister: M.D. Meares, Chaplain. Witnesses: Thomas Bateman and Samuel Parke.

What does "Consent: The Governor" mean? Could either party be a convict or the child of one?

Was this Margaret Rowley the daughter of Bridget Byrne, convict sent to NSW with two children?

Many thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / Sarah SMITH WILLIS LYONS
« on: Sunday 19 May 13 04:27 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for the place and date of birth and death of Sarah SMITH.

Sarah married Ashford Thomas WILLIS NSW BDM 2464/1872 in Macleay River district, NSW, Australia. Ashford Willis was killed in Cloudy Bay, New Guinea 1878, aged 32 or 33. They had 3 children, Emma Florence, Ada and Kenneth. Emma is my great grandmother. Ashford was the eldest son of William Willis, Isle of Wight (per death notice SMH 12April 1879).

Sarah married William Lyons of Windsor, NSW, 19 July 1881, according to Sydney Morning Herald Marriages notice 6/8/1881. I don't know if they had any children, but perhaps Joseph McKenzie Lyons NSW BDM 7957/1882 is their son.

Australia / John and Thomas Ledsam
« on: Sunday 21 April 13 04:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for information about John Ledsam, who came to Australia before 1848, worked as the poundkeeper in Maitland, New South Wales, lived for some time in Adelaide, South Australia, travelled to Ireland, married Martha, who died in 1848, possibly in Youghal, Ireland, then returned to Australia.
He next married Margaret Cusick or Cusack, in Maitland, having resumed his job as poundkeeper). He and Margaret had several children, including Anna Mary, later known as Hannah Mary (at marriage).
I don't know if John and Martha ever lived in Maitland or had any children. I don't yet have John's death certificate.
I do have the marriage certificate of John and Margaret.
John's father was possibly Thomas Ledsam, Fermoy, Cork. Thomas may have travelled to Australia and lived in Maitland, as a Thomas died there aged about 70.

Ireland / George Cusick or Cusack
« on: Sunday 21 April 13 04:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for George Cusick or Cusack, father of seven children who emigrated to Australia in 1849: Margaret, Michael, Winifred, Teresa, Kieran, Ellen, Eliza. Both their parents were dead when they sailed, according to the ship's record, the UNA. They are listed as single women and single men, not as a family.
Their mother may have been Mary. They settled in the Maitland area of New South Wales. Margaret was 25 when she emigrated, and the youngest child was 14. They may come from Queen's County or King's.
Margaret married John Ledsam, the eldest son of Thomas Ledsam, Fermoy, Cork (according to a family notice entry in the Maitland Mercury).
I have Margaret's death certificate, 1885.

« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 03:19 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the burial sites of the family of Thomas and Sarah (nee Sowden) Penrose.
Their children were: Jane b. 1823; Betsy b. 1825;William b. 1834; Sarah b. 1836; John b. 1838; Mary b. 1840; Paul b. 1842; Thirza b. 1844; Elijah b. 1846; Joseph b. 1848.
Thomas senior died in Oct qtr 1849 in Launceston, vol. 9 p.102 I think, and Sarah died either in Liskeard, Jan qtr 1863 v. 5c p.44 or Liskeard Jan qtr 1865 v. 5c p.43.
I think Joseph died in 1858, April qtr Lauceston v. 5c p. 20. I cannot find Sarah's, Thomas's or Joseph's burials.
Any ideas of places other than churchgrounds?
Thank you. GG

Family History Beginners Board / Gedye/Giddy/Giddey/Weary/Penrose
« on: Tuesday 03 May 11 05:20 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for any information on my ancestor, born before her baptism as Ann Giddy on 1 January 1836 in Warleggan, Cornwall, the daughter of John and Ann Giddy or Gedye, later Giddey. Ann had a son, John Charles Giddy, born 1859 in St. Neot, father unnamed. Ann later married, as far as I am aware, Paul Penrose, in 1870. John's death certificate (NSW, Australia) shows his mother's name as Ann Weary and his father's as John Charles Giddey. I have been unable to verify the last two names and can find no other John Charles Giddey. Ann had a brother, John Coppin Giddy or Gedye. I am a total novice at genealogy and have no Ancestry or other subscriptions at present. John Charles Giddey was my mother's grandfather. Paul Penrose was gaoled for something, I think, according to records of Cornwall. I don't know whether Ann Giddey (John's mother) went to Australia following her son who served with the Royal Marines.  John appears with Ann in the 1861 and 1871 England Censuses and in London in the 1881 England Census, on the ship the Forrester. John served in World War I and later became Harbour Master in Victoria. Later he had a shop in Sydney, Australia. He married Mary Ann (Marianna) Babarovic(h) and they had four children.
Ann simply disappears from all records after her marriage to Paul Penrose. They had no children. He later remarried and had children. I cannot tell whether Ann died or they divorced or just disappeared. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.
