Moray (Elginshire) / Thomas Grant
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 16:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have the following OPR baptism:

3rd Oct 1784: Thomas natural son of James Grant / now gone to America / and Isabel Miller in Nether Tomdow baptised.  James Stuart servant there and Hugh Beaton in Nether Borlume witnesses.

I have Isabel sponsoring an illegitimate child, Robert Banks in Elgin in 1789 and suspect she is the Isabel Miller who died in Elgin in 1801. I have no further information on Thomas and wonder if anyone can find him after his birth.  Isabel may have brought up Robert so the boys could have been together at some time, Thomas could be Grant or Miller and he could have gone to America to join his father at some stage.  I know this is a long shot but I am wondering if anyone can help!

The Common Room / Robert and Lois Smith
« on: Wednesday 23 January 19 21:38 GMT (UK)  »
I noticed that Willingham Auctions have a sampler for sale:  https://www.willinghamauctions.com/sales/specialist-sales/020219/lot/531 in their 2nd February sale.  It lists eight children and their dates of birth.  These are the children of Robert and Lois Smith who appear on the 1861 census at House Green, Sandon, Chelmsford Essex.  I just thought I'd mention it in case someone on this site is researching the family and might be interested.  Not sure where I should have posted this.

Other Countries / Singapore: Merchant Seaman's records.
« on: Saturday 06 October 18 20:36 BST (UK)  »
I have a Raymond Hugo Clibborn b.1910 Hull (1st Mate, March 1931 London No 30717) who left the UK as crew on the Memnon on the 13th January 1934 for the Far East.  On his 1939 questionnaire, when he volunteered for the Royal Naval Reserves at the outbreak of war, he states "Master, July 1935, Singapore, no 603", gives his address as c/o The Straits Merchant Service Guild, Colyn Quay, Singapore which I believe was a sort of club and says that he speaks Malay.  I have some of his earlier merchant seaman records from Findmypast.  I also have the Royal Naval records for the fifteen months he was a temporary lieutenant in the RNR in Singapore in 1939/40.  Does anyone know where I can find merchant naval records for Singapore between 1934 and 1939?

World War Two / Evacuees who escaped Singapore
« on: Friday 14 September 18 20:14 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone direct me towards records/sites where I might find shipping records on people who escaped from Singapore in 1942 other than the Malayan Volunteers Group or Cofepow, both of which I've checked?  My great uncle Raymond Hugo Clibborn (a civilian resident of Malaya) was injured by a landmine in Johore, managed to get onto a ship leaving Singapore which was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese, survived and arrived back in England later that year in what his brother described as "a shocking state".  Mentally, he never recovered and died in an asylum in 1960.  I am trying to find which ship he was on of the many that were sunk and how he got back to England - both long shots, I know, but if any one has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

World War Two / Donovan Harold Clibborn
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 10:30 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for information on D H Clibborn, born 1917 - died 1996. According to his obituary he was Foreign Office in Genoa until the start of the war, then an intelligence officer who served at Bletchley Park, transferred at some point to North Africa where he liaised with the Long Range Desert Group, went on to Sicily and then Italy with Montgomery and ended the war at the surrender of Brussels. He finished the war as a major.

I have found him in the London Gazette of 14th Jan. 1941, heading "Intelligence Corps": The undermentioned Cadets, from Sandhurst and 162nd O.T.C.U.'s to be 2nd Lts. 21st Dec. 1940.... Donovan Harold Clibborn (162736)

I would be very grateful if anyone can help me put some firm dates, etc. on his war activities.
