Wexford / No Sign of GRO Registration for 1880 Marriage
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 04:41 GMT (UK)  »
Blackwater parish registers show marriage for Patrick McGill and Catherine Downey on 27 November 1880. They were married, and went on to have multiple children.  I see no sign of this marriage on IrishGenealogy site!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Surprising Variation in Levels of DNA Match
« on: Friday 08 March 24 03:06 GMT (UK)  »
My father and an aunt both did DNA testing with Anc*stry.
There is no doubt that they are full siblings, with many thousands of shared matches.

But the variabillity in the level of matching from them to other family members continues to surprise me.  From nieces and nephews, to distant relatives.

To take just one example that I noticed today:

My aunt has a 111 cM match to someone I will call Z.
My father has no match at all to Z.

Seems to me that this should be outside the error bars, so to speak. And not the first example I have noticed.

Ireland / The Perils of Literacy
« on: Monday 12 February 24 05:02 GMT (UK)  »
Not a request for family research, just an interesting story.

A relative of mine back in the day was not just literate, but given to writing poetry.

He wrote a poem about the undoubted perils of lead poisoning.

Which he dedicated to his landlord.

He won a free, all expenses paid trip to the Antipodes!

A letter he wrote while awaiting trial was one of the principal pieces of evidence used to convict him.

Ireland / Specifying Precise Parish in Ancestry Searches?
« on: Wednesday 27 December 23 03:31 GMT (UK)  »
When searching the Catholic parish register collection on Ancestry I invariably specify the exact diocese of interest. Results will always list the particular parish, as well as the diocese. However, whenever I try to specify a precise parish of interest, using the location or lived in fields, the outcome is invariably the same - zero results.

So, is there a way to successfully specify a particular parish of interest with these searches?

The Common Room / Accessing Historic Newspapers - Which is Better, BNA or FindMyPast?
« on: Tuesday 19 December 23 03:39 GMT (UK)  »
Given that BNA and FindMyPast are linked, this is an odd question to have to ask.  I have only used the BNA site to access historic newspapers, but some recent comments alerted me to the fact that the BNA and FindMyPast implementations are not the same. There are several major metrics by which their historic newspaper article search facilities may differ:

1). The utility or power of their search engines
I would have assumed they were identical. But I have seen comments that they aren't.
- How do they differ?
- Which is better?

2) Pricing
I bought BNA access as a standalone package and have an Ancestry UK account for DNA matching etc.
- What pricing options are available for newspaper access through FindMyPast?
- Better deal or not overall?

3) OCR
The optical character recognition (OCR) implementation is really fundamental to the search functionality.
- Is this the same between BNA and FindMyPast?

Lancashire / William Crean Buried 31/1/1964, no Death Registration?
« on: Friday 15 December 23 22:57 GMT (UK)  »
There is a burial record for William Crean in Ford Cemetery, Liverpool, on 31/1/1964.
This is presumably William Crean, born 1877 in Oulart, Co. Wexford, and living in Liverpool with his family on the 1911 census. This seams clear as he was buried in the same grave as William's son Aidan Peter Crean, killed in October 1940 in a Luftwaffe bombing raid on Liverpool  However, I can't find any death or probate record to match the above burial record for William

Ireland / Missing Marriage/1901 Census for William Crean & Ellen Murphy
« on: Friday 15 December 23 06:56 GMT (UK)  »
I just can't seem to find a marriage for this couple, William Crean and Ellen Murphy. Neither can I find them as a couple, or him, in the 1901 census.

William  was born in the Oulart district, 10 Mar 1877. Ellen is also stated to be born Oulart on 1911 English census.

1 Oct 1901 they have a daughter Mary, born Market Sq. Enniscorthy, father publican.
9 Apr 1903 they have a son Richard, also born Market Sq. Enniscorthy, father shopkeeper.

They have at least two further children, born Liverpool, and are in Liverpool in the 1911 census, where the father is, much to my astonishment, now listed as a laborer, married 10 years.

But no sign of a marriage, anywhere in Ireland, or England either. Or in the 1901 census.

Note that both William and Ellen appear in several *incorrect* Ancestry family trees, so don't rely on those!
