World War Two / Defence Medal (UK) WW 2
« on: Thursday 01 March 12 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
My Granfather served with both the Auxiliary Fire Service and the National Fire Service in Liverpool during the Second World War. He served for approximately 6 years and therefore, he met the medal entitlement criteria.

I have tried the MOD Medal Office but they could not help as they only issue campaign medals. I have been advised that Defence Medals issued to civilians, were probably issued at County level and that the Civil Contingencies Secretariat may be able to help.

Would anyone know where to get the information from to confirm whether he was infact issued with the Defence Medal.

Thanks

Armed Forces / MOD MEDAL OFFICE
« on: Monday 23 January 12 12:50 GMT (UK)  »
In December 2011, I wrote to the MOD Medal Office at Innsworth requesting information regarding my Grandfather's medal issue. Not his WW 1 entitlement but a question reference the re-issue of his medals and whether he was entitled to a WW2 Defence Medal, for his service in both the Axillary Fire Service and the Defence Fire Service.

My enquiry was acknowledged and I was sent out both a request for information and next of kin forms. These were duly completed and sent back to the Medal Office. A month later I was sent my reply, a letter stating that the Medal Office no longer have access to the records and could not help any further.  The Medal Rolls for all service and campaign awards prior to 1936 are now held by The National Archives at Kew.

They also suggested that I write to the Civil Contingencies Secretariat, 3rd floor, 35 Great Smith Street London SW1P 3BQ, for information regarding his ARP Service. This department assess and issue any medal entitlement's.

Would anyone know if this also includes the National Fire Service/ Auxiliary Fire Service as well.

Thanks

Cheshire / Earl of Chester Yeomanry Cavalry
« on: Monday 23 January 12 12:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find out information regarding Quarter Master William Allwood of Burland and Quarter Master R Allwood both of the Earl of Chester Yeomanry Cavalry,

William Allwood served with the Peckforton Troop since its formation in 1876 till his retirement on 01 July 1887.

Robert Allwood was with the Eaton Troop and progressed through the ranks. I believe that he was a Draper living in Nantwich. I am unsure of his dates of service but have newspaper articles dated 1893 relating to the Cheshire Rifle Association.

I have tried the Chester Castle Museum but have not been able to find anything. I have also tried Chester Records Office and again have drawn a blank.

Would any one be able to suggest where to look or have any information.

If this post is on the wrong board please could it be moved to the correct one.

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / National Fire Service
« on: Wednesday 02 November 11 21:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information about the Liverpool National Fire Service (NFS), Force 26 -  F Division.

My grandfather served with the NFS during the war years in Liverpool.

I know that Force 26 covered the Greater Merseyside area, including St Helens and West Cheshire. The Headquarters was at West Derby, Liverpool.

F Division had 9 Fire Stations which included Southport, Formby, Hightown and Ormskirk. My Grandfather served at Station 2-Z which was Formby and Fire Station 2-R but I do not know what station this was.

The 9 NFS Stations were each allocated a letter from Z to R. Would anyone know what Station related to what Letter and any other information.

I have tried the Liverpool Records Office and the Merseyside Fire Service Museum but they have very little information.

I understand that a lot of the NFS records were disposed of after the war as they were no longer required.

Thanks

So far I have been unsuccessful in finding information reference the Borough of Crosby Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) formed in 1938. Except that there were three AFS Stations:

The Serpentine, Moorside Road and Cameron's Garage, Liverpool Road.

I have tried the Merseyside Fire Service Museum but they have very little information and the Local Library History section have no information.

My grandfather served with both the AFS and the National Fire Service.

Would anyone be able to help with any information about the Crosby AFS.

Thanks

Armed Forces / No 2 AFS Blundell Sands Station, Blundell Sands Liverpool
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 15:18 BST (UK)  »
From my grandfather, Frank Pilsbury's Medal Card Record It would appear that he was at No 2 AFS Blundell Sands Station on 27 May 1941. There is no other information.

He was born on 05 May 1894, West Bromwich, Staffordshire and served in Both the 9th Manchester and Cheshire Regiments during the 1WW. From his marriage certificate in 1918, his trade is given as a Bargeman, whilst serving with the Manchester Regiment. He did come from a family of boatmen. His service number with the Manchester Regiment was 32414 and with the Cheshire Regiment 69795.

From the remarks column on his Medal Card are the following initials: B. W. V. M. IVB /574d/136/41. Then a zero lined through. Underneath this writing is a zero lined through then AS/Gen/6729.

In the correspondence column where the address is located, there is a zero lined through, then 27/5/1941 No AFS, B/Sands Stn, Blundell Sands Liverpool.

Any information with regards to No 2 AFS Blundell Sands and any suggestions regarding the abbreviations would be gratefully received. Apologies not able to attach the medal card.

Thanks
