Kerry / Matthew GALBRAITH/Sarah CARTER
« on: Thursday 08 December 11 07:06 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find further information relating to my gggrandparents who were both born in Tralee, County Kerry.

Matthew GALBRAITH b. 1806 m. Sarah CARTER b. 1805.  I have no date for their marriage, but they left from Cork, Ireland on the 'Lady McNaughton' on 5 November 1836 with six daughters, three of whom either did not survive the voyage or died shortly after arrival in Australia.  They arrived at Port Jackson 26 February 1837.

I have possible parents for Matthew.

Father - John GALBRAITH
Mother - Elizabeth (surname not given).

This is as given on Matthew's baptism record 18 April 1806.

Can anyone help to determine if this is Matthew's parents, what his mother's surname was, and possibly find Sarah's parents as well, please.  Thanking everyone in advance for your assistance.

Australia / CHAPMAN, William
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 05:49 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help me with some information re my great-uncle, William CHAPMAN.  I know that he was born in Paterson NSW in 1867, parents Josiah CHAPMAN and Catherine, nee GALBRAITH.  My grandfather was his brother, Josiah (the second Josiah of this marriage, the first having died in infancy).

What I am looking for is his marriage.  I know he married a Margaret, but I cannot access paid sites or buy certificates at this point in time.  In the period when he would have been old enough to marry, there are three marriages listed in NSW BDM for a William CHAPMAN and a Margaret.

Can someone help me find out which one was his please?  And thank you in advance for any assistance.

Europe / MCDONALD, Malcolm George - Belgium Connection
« on: Sunday 28 August 11 04:11 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if there is someone in Belgium who might be able to help me.  My great-uncle, Malcolm George MCDONALD, is buried in Kandahar Farm Cemetery, after dying of wounds received in battle during WWI.

His plot number is II. F. 9.  What I would appreciate is if someone could visit the cemetery and take a photo of his grave, and PM me with the photo please.  This is one of the tragedies of our family.  This young man was wounded on his 19th birthday, and died three days later from those wounds.  He never really got to see what life was all about.

I would appreciate any help at all with this, and thank you in advance.  I know it is asking a lot, but being in ill-health, I will never be able to visit his grave myself.  I grieve for this man who I never knew, but who gave so much for us all.

Thank you.

Ireland / Bridget LAWLER (possible LALOR/LAWLOR)
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 04:22 BST (UK)  »
Can someone help me please?  My ggggrandmother was Bridget LAWLER, who arrived in Tasmania on the 'Charles Kerr' on 19th November 1835.  She married George MOORE (a convict) on 4th October 1836 in Launceston, Tasmania, died 1852.  I have not been able to find out from whence she came, but is listed as being Irish.  She was brought over to Australia as a 'bounty lass' to help even up the numbers of men and women in the colony.  Her daughter, Selina MOORE, is my gggrandmother.

I would appreciate any help given, as it is very difficult trying to trace common surnames when you don't even know which county to begin with.

Australia / How many Samuel CHAPMANs in South Australia?
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 06:36 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information relating to my gguncle, who arrived in Australia (NSW records state Sydney/Newcastle) on the "Bangalore" in January 1855, with his older brother, Josiah.  Parents were Josiah CHAPMAN and Ann ABBOTT.  Apparently Samuel went to South Australia and Josiah lost contact with him after a while.  Josiah remained in NSW and married Catherine GALBRAITH.  Apparently there are several Samuel CHAPMANs of this vintage in SA, and with no further identifying information, locating the right one is proving very difficult.

Forward thanks for any assistance provided, it is greatly appreciated.

« on: Thursday 26 May 11 03:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Is there a specific non-chargeable website where I can find out about persons returning to England from Australia in the period 1852-1854?  Google only seems to want to provide info re persons going TO Australia in this timeframe.  Since I don't know much at all about English shipping I don't know where to start.

Any suggestions most gratefully accepted and thank you in advance.

Australia Lookups completed / Return to England COMPLETED...MANY THANKS
« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 06:34 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information regarding passenger lists for people returning to England from Australia in the early 1850s, between 1852 and 1854 to be precise.  There are plenty of passenger indexes for people arriving in Australia, but I cannot seem to find any that list persons leaving.

Any ideas please??

England / Josiah and Samuel CHAPMAN
« on: Monday 23 May 11 00:35 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find out if I have the correct Josiah CHAPMAN for my family.  Josiah CHAPMAN b. 19 November 1826 Christened 16 April 1827 Independent or Calvanistic Independent, Wisborough Green, Sussex, England.  My Josiah left for Australia and arrived January 1855 with his brother, Samuel, aboard the 'Bangalore'.  They arrived as assisted immigrants.

Family lore has Samuel leaving for South Australia at some point after arrival in NSW, and his brother, Josiah, lost contact with him after a while.  Is there any evidence that the Josiah of Wisborough Green had a brother Samuel?  I have traced a Samuel CHAPMAN, in South Australia, but the contact re this person says he arrived three years earlier than my Samuel.  However, his age and the time line suggests that perhaps he had gone to South Aus, and then returned to England to persuade older brother, Josiah to accompany him to Aus.  His father is also listed as Josiah.

Information re christening lists parents as Josiah CHAPMAN and Ann ABBOTT.  I do recall family members saying that there was a CHAPMAN as a minister of a church and the name Steeple Bumpstead mentioned, if this helps at all.

I would greatly appreciate any help given, as I am not in a position to buy certificates, or pay for viewing information relating to my family.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Preserving documents COMPLETED, THANK YOU
« on: Thursday 19 May 11 06:01 BST (UK)  »
I would like some advice on the best way to preserve some documents.  I have found a bundle of letters that my grandfather wrote to my parents (he wrote to each individually) and some of them are written in pencil.  As some of the letters are over 50 years old, they are becoming very faint, and I would like to be able to keep them safely.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.  Thanking you in advance.
