Armed Forces / Military Regiments Based at Ravenscar, North Yorkshire.
« on: Friday 05 April 24 22:47 BST (UK)  »
I have read that some military regiments were billeted at the Raven Hall Hotel at Ravenscar in North Yorkshire and that it may have been used as a training establishment during WW2. But I have also found what appears to be some WW1 era graffiti carved into some of the walls in the grounds.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Armed Forces / United States Air Force at RAF Sturgate in the 1950s
« on: Saturday 16 December 23 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
I've been doing some research on the USAF when it was based at RAF Sturgate in Lincolnshire in the 1950s and I'm hoping that some Roots Chat members might be able to help.

The base had its own newspaper which I believe was called "Sturgate Farm News". The base had the nickname "Sturgate on the Farm" because of its rural location.

I've never been able to find any copies of the newspaper so I have no idea what it looked like, what form it took, what it covered etc., and I was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help.

Fingers crossed.

Many thanks.

Chris.

Harry Frederick Harris Mason was born in Ketley, Shropshire on 2nd October 1917. He died in hospital in Bromsgrove on 18 September 1963 and is buried in Wombridge, Shropshire.

I'm hoping to apply to the MOD for his service record but before I can do that I need his service number. That's the problem.

He served in the Royal Marines and apparently reached the rank of Corporal. He landed with the British forces on the Normandy coast on D-Day, 1944.

Family conversations talk about him being awarded the Africa Star in addition to others. He was also in Sicily and in South Africa (the latter presumably on R&R).

But I just don't know how to find his service number so that I can apply to the MOD.

Could anyone give me any pointers please.

Many thanks.

I am trying to identify an Alexa Mearns but I'm struggling and I hope someone might be able to help. She may have come from the Montrose area and was apparently one of six children. She might have been born around 1921. It would seem that she married a George Duell of Aberdeen and I can find two children as a result of that marriage, one in 1943 and the other in 1945. The birth certificate from 1943 quotes the father as George Duell, Craftsman 3313933 REME and the mother as "Alexa Anderson Duell" formerly Mearns, living in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland. I can't find a birth record for Alexa and I can't find any marriage records. Can anyone help please?

Shropshire / Conflicting DOBs for Muriel Guest and Barbara Guest.
« on: Saturday 16 March 19 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
Muriel L Guest and Barbara Guest were two of the children of William Guest and Elizabeth Louisa Peaceful. My records indicate that both were born at 88 Hillside, Wellington, Shropshire.

The 1939 Register indicates that Muriel was born on 7th April 1915. But Barbara was born on 27th July 1915. There's something not quite right here. Either I've done something stupid or the records are a bit dodgy.

Also, on the 1939 Register Muriel's surname of Guest has been crossed out and the name "Alim" written above. She didn't take the name Alim until 1942 when she got married so obviously the details on the 1939 Register were being altered and some would say "tampered with" long after the event.

Can anyone shed any light on any of this?

Many thanks.

Chris.

Shropshire / Burial Place of Thomas Healey and Annie Stanworth Healey.
« on: Friday 28 December 18 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone tell me where Thomas Healey (b. 1859, d.1930) and his wife Annie Stanworth Healey (née Harris) (b. 1857, d. 1931) are buried? They were married at Ketley in 1890.

I also believe that the ashes of one of their daughters, Georgina Eleanor Harris Weatherby (née Healey) were interred with them in 1974/75.

Many thanks.

Shropshire / Church of St. John The Evangelist, Lawley. Removal of headstones.
« on: Friday 05 January 18 13:41 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me when headstones were cleared from the churchyard at St. John's in Lawley? I'm specifically interested in the one for H.J. Mason.

I know that a memorial stone for him was subsequently erected in Shrewsbury Cemetery and a new headstone was erected at St. John's by the CWGC in November 2015, but I'd like to know when his original stone was removed.

Many thanks.

I've been advised to post this on here in the hope that someone might be able to help me.

I'm trying to decipher the parish record for the marriage of Harry Mason to Sarah Anne Elizabeth Healey on 5th August 1916 at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Ketley, Shropshire.

I can make out three of the four witnesses, Thomas Healey, Georgina Eleanor Harris Healey and Anne Stanworth Healey. I can't make out the fourth witness, William Henry ?????? and I can't read the vicar's name (it looks like T. Lawrie ????????).

Can anyone help please.

Many thanks.
