London and Middlesex / 'Fancy That' ...
« on: Tuesday 16 April 24 19:13 BST (UK)  »
Bit of a vague request, but I'm trying to help a friend find a salon called 'Fancy That - Guys n Dolls' that used to be around in the 1970s in London - she thinks somewhere in Willesden/Neasden area.  She thinks the shop sign had a man's face on one side and a woman's on the other, and that Fancy That may have been in purple ... no more info other than that!  I know it's a long shot, but someone may recall it????  There may have been a chemist shop next door.  I have done all the usual internet searches and image searches but nothing is coming up.  I have also done a fruitless search on Brent Council planning applications site to see if it is mentioned in any change of use applications or shop renovations.  Many thanks!  Nina

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / East Cemetery, Bournemouth - photo please!
« on: Tuesday 09 January 24 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, and a Happy New Year to everyone!

I was hoping someone might be able to take a photo and make a note of the memorial inscription of a grave/headstone for me when next in East Cemetery, Gloucester Road, Boscombe, Bournemouth?

The grave is for Fanny Josephine Fox who died on 15 July 1935, and Kate Williams who died on 6 December 1937, grave number R6/189.  I am not sure whether there is a headstone or not.

I have attached a plan of the cemetery with an approximate location of the grave shown by the orange blob to the right hand side of the plan.

Many thanks!  Nina

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Looking for two old houses in Bournemouth ...
« on: Saturday 30 December 23 10:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone - I was hoping someone might be able to help me locate a couple of houses in Bournemouth?  I expect that they are no longer standing, but would like to be able to see where they once were if that is the case.

The first one I am looking for is 'Dundonald, 82 Christchurch Road' - there was a school at this address for some years, definitely between 1889-1895 - the Principals were Mrs Fanny Fox and Miss Kate Williams.  I have looked on the National Libraries of Scotland (NLS) side by side maps and found an old map that shows very clearly each house along the road in about 1900 but none are numbered or named bar the odd huge house.  I think 82 was located roughly near the corner of Knole Road and Christchurch Road - Linden Hall is named on the 1900 map on one corner, and a modern map shows this site (now flats) is number 80.  The next corner sees a jump in numbering to 428 which is odd.

The second house I am hoping to locate is 'St Elmo, Hawkwood Road' - the same two ladies were next at this address in the 1901 census.  I do not have a number for this house, and can see from modern maps that most of this road is now a car park bar a few houses at the eastern end.  I have found that the road was lined with detached houses in 1900 from the old maps on NLS website but again cannot pinpoint exactly where this house once stood (or may still stand if at the eastern end).

Any help locating where these houses once stood, or still stand, would be much appreciated!

Many thanks, Nina

London and Middlesex / COMPLETED - Looking for Massey Road, Plumstead ...
« on: Tuesday 21 November 23 17:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone - I'm trying to find out where Massey Road, Plumstead, London was - it doesn't seem to exist any more.   Any searches online only come up with images of a house at 213 Massey Road in November 1969 where a murder was committed ... I've looked at old maps but haven't found anything (clearly looking in the wrong place or it has been cleared away by the local council) - any help re location would be much appreciated!  Thanks, Nina

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bradford - Silvio's Bakery ...
« on: Monday 09 January 23 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi!  Does anyone remember exactly where Silvio's Bakery was on White Abbey Road in Bradford?  I think it closed down in the late 70s.  I cannot find anything online about it other than some listings in the London Gazette, but they have the address as simply White Abbey Road.

Many thanks,  Nina

Hello!  I'm not having much luck so far, so I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me find out some info about Poulton Bottle Manufacturers based at 12 Galleywall Road, Bermondsey, London?

My Granddad worked as a Bottle Washer and I have just purchased the 1921 Census and now I have the name and address of his employer - as above.  I have looked at a few old maps but none have buildings numbered, but I think it was possibly the same side and end of the road as the cocoa factory called W S Shuttleworth & Co (and that is only based on the fact that a more modern map shows that even numbers are on that side, starting at the Southwark Park Rd end).

Many thanks, Nina

Berkshire / Springfield House, Alma Road, Windsor
« on: Sunday 24 October 21 17:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone ... I was wondering if someone out there might have any photos of Springfield House, Alma Road, Windsor?  It was also numbered as 95 Alma Road, and was built around 1859 and demolished in approx 1962 to make way for some modern flats called Hatton Court, which still stand on the site today (on the corner of Alma Road and Springfield Road).

I have found a b&w drawing online by a lady called Phyllis Floud who lived in the house in the 1940s for a short while, but have been unable to find any photos from any era.  I have not attached the drawing as I am unsure re copyright issues, but if anyone wants to see it you can type in 'springfield house alma road windsor tapatalk' and the drawing will come up close to the top of the image results in Google.

I have contacted the local history society and asked them various questions regarding the house as I am doing a potted history about it as my friend's relatives lived there years ago, but no joy with any photos.

If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated as we would love to see a proper photo of the house!

Nina

Hi!  I am hoping to try and narrow down the decade in which these photos were taken.  I always believed it was the 1950s but a family member thinks the men look more 1930s in their attire.  I have looked online at various examples of suits but it hasn't really helped.  Perhaps the slight sepia photo itself might be more indicative of one of the decades?  Annoyingly, as is the way with a box of inherited photos, there is no writing on the back to tell me who the men are, but I have since found the location of the sundial to be in Suffolk.  Many thanks, Nina

London and Middlesex / Acton Residential Club location?
« on: Sunday 07 February 21 22:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi!  Hoping someone can help as I seem to having no luck at all with my search ...

I am looking for the exact location/street address for a hostel for ex-offenders which was called the ‘Acton Residential Club’.  All I know is that it was on Acton High Street, West London.

One of my relatives (deceased since 1992) lived there after coming out of prison in the 1970s - I guess it was a bit like a halfway house.  I was just interested to locate it as he never spoke much about it.

Many thanks! Nina
